Saint Charlie Posted 31 March, 2014 Share Posted 31 March, 2014 England U18s keeper played for our U21s tonight. Was/still is a Southend player, who knows - could have been on trial I guess. Interesting with Cropper out of contract at end of season anyway.

Matthew Le God Posted 2 April, 2014 Share Posted 2 April, 2014 This helps explain it... http://www.southendunited.co.uk/news/article/020414-ted-smith-england-southampton-1462229.aspx
Saint Charlie Posted 2 April, 2014 Author Share Posted 2 April, 2014 We had Chris Johns on the bench who has played U21 games before so would imagine it was mostly to get a close look at Smith. Be interesting to see if anything ever comes of it. Goalkeeper is certainly a weak area for us, with neither Cropper nor Gazza really looking anywhere near the first team standard, and KD getting worse all the time. Would expect a couple of additions in that area this summer, one in the first team squad and one in dev squad.

If there was anyone who needed a loan move to get some 1st team football under their belt, it's Gazza.

the saint in winchester Posted 2 April, 2014 Share Posted 2 April, 2014 If we can get in a quality keeper for next season who can rival Boruc, then I would imagine Gazza will go out on a season's loan, to make him or ascertain if he can play at prem level. Saint Charlie Posted 3 April, 2014 Author Share Posted 3 April, 2014 Seems like an unofficial trial despite what Phil Brown says.
Matthew Le God Posted 3 April, 2014 Share Posted 3 April, 2014 Gazzaniga, Johns (who has been on the bench behind Smith in both games) and possibly Cropper could all have played in goal in the two game Smith is being used in. Its clearly a chance for Saints to look at Smith up close in training and over two games with a view to making a move. Phil Brown is trying to appease the Southend fans which will work in the event of Saints not moving for Smith, but its hard to see why Saints would use Smith over Johns if they weren't potentially looking to sign him. lickierambert Posted 3 April, 2014 Share Posted 3 April, 2014 hmm the second goal Saints u21 conceded today didn't exactly shower him in glory. A weak parry straight to their player.
david in sweden Posted 3 April, 2014 Share Posted 3 April, 2014 ....perhaps it's a permanent deal that will take Lee Barnard to Southend...and we keep the lad - as yet another goalie......or maybe we will loan them one of our surplus keepers for a season? ......or ?...........or ? Barnard is out of contract in June so he can go wherever he finds a contract without any counter deal coming our way. We're probably looking for a replacement for Cropper, he's out of contract this year, won't play for the first team unless there's some extraordinary upheaval so his time is done here as likely as not..
