Steven Davis

We have the best midfield depth I can ever remember at this club, and for me, Steven Davis is an absolute must on the teamsheet. The guy is never flashy, doesnt get any headlines, yet I hardly ever see him misplace a pass or make a mistake. There's a case for him being Player of the Season, but with Lallana, Rodriguez etc playing at such a high level, he's probably not going to get it.

But Unsung Player of the Year? No other candidate for me. He's the type of player every team needs to be really, really good. This time last year, I thought of him as just a squad player. Now, he's like the engine room of the whole team.

Thoughts??

I have to agree. I used to think lesser of him too but he seems to fit into our style of play really well. Every team needs a player like him to just "get the work done". On a sidenote, I also used to think that every team needed a 34/35 years old player to guide and hold the team together through his experience. We haven't had a figure like that for years.

Wasn't convinced we needed him when we signed him or if a few seasons on Scotland would have dulled his obvious talent, he has certainly proved me wrong on both counts an essential cog in the machine and his ability is clear for all to see.

I've had grief from the gang down here when I've said he's my player of the Season. He is Mr Dependable - kind of the modern era Nick Holmes.

Obviously I understand Lovren, AL & JRod's claims to the PotS award but like others said above, he is often under-rated, not just by many of our fans but by the media et al.

Said it a million times, Lawrie Mac always said a good football team is made up of Violinists and Roadsweepers................. without doubt Steven Davis wears the Roadsweeper hat very well in that analogy, not a glamour player but works his socks off to allow the Violinists like Lallana to weave their magic and enthral us.

Cracking value at £750k too

I think that he has had an exceptional season.

He seems to provide a good balance for some of the less experienced players in the team and I admire his immense work-rate and unselfish play which in part has enabled that platform for some of the more "obvious" talents, like the full backs, to develop.

He has also got underrated technical abilities as well- his passing range and eye for a ball is excellent as is his ball holding ability and aggressive harrying - very much a flag bearer for the new Southampton pressing style - his only (relative) weaknesses are physical stature and pace but his experience helps him a great deal with the latter. He plays at the level of a £5M-£10M midfielder but we paid a fraction of that. An excellent acquisition and in a normal year a stand out for player of the season. In this year though its not normal and you can only give it to the player who genuinely went from EPL class to World Class - the captain, the leader, the hardest worker and best player in the team, Adam Lallana, no discussion.

Without Steven Davis, Lallana, Lambert and Rodriguez wouldn't be performing nearly as well - he's the platform the others need to show what they can do. Well deserving of his starting place in the team and the NI captaincy.

Agree he's more than a gritty, mr dependable. It was his ball that put Lambert through for our first goal - indeed he put him clean through earlier on. Has an excellent eye for a ball and is very assured in tight spaces.

He's been fantastic this season, if only he could score more!

He is our 4th highest scorer. This is a criticism that should be aimed at a lot of our other players, rather than SD. Morgan, Wanyama, Guly and Cork have scored 3 between them in total this season, we have 3 excellent full backs who so far have contributed 1 goal between them. More importantly Davis is 13th= in the Premier League for assists, with 6, same as Lallana, only a few very good players have more, Suarez, Gerrard, Rooney and some guy called Lambert amongst them. It is also SD that enables Chambers to get forward so much where he has impressed hugely in the last few weeks, with Davis slotting back into the RB position usually when Chambers gets down the line (which is why Davis will not be moved to the centre any time soon). SD is a top player and we are very lucky to have him and to have got him on such a good deal. Although not from our set up he did hail from one of the best youth set ups of the time, Villa, winning the Youth Cup in 2002, technically he does not have the flair of Lallana but he is still a very very gifted player.

I Think stephen would be the first to admit that he has benefited greatly from the coaching of Mauricio and his coaching team. He was always a good steady midfielder but this year has blossomed into a really top class premier player like many others in the team. Glad to see him getting much deserved praise and recognised by the fans for the graft he does in a very good team.

I didn't used to think he was all that, but Pochettino has turned him into an integral part of his system. His calm and methodical play, plus his positioning and quiet professionalism are vital to the way the team performs.

More than glad to be proved wrong, because let's face it I rarely am.

Cracking player, Mr Consistent in that you know what you are likely to get from him week in, week out.

Though, to suggest he is anywhere near Lallana for Player of the Season is just silly in my opinion.

Lallana would be in the reckoning for League Player of the Season, though of course Suarez will (quite rightly, imo) waltz away with that.

Also, if I was looking to improve the squad over the summer, he would be one of the players I would look to upgrade.

Good for the bench though.

If we find someone who can do his job *and* adds something more going forward, then yes. But we can't replace him with another creative attacker. Davis is like passing lubricant. Always available and always playing at the right tempo.

He's been ridiculously consistent this season, an absolute bargain for the price we paid for him. I always think its fantastic how whenever he has the ball, he knows exactly how much time hes got, and he also knows exactly where his teammates should be. Very dependable as well.

He's completely perfect for our formation and the tactics we deploy. He's mr dependable for sure, but he's got so much quality and technical class. Some of the stuff he can do with the football can rival lallana.

That's interesting because I don't think of him as having the trickery of Lallana but he certainly does have the same really quick feet when in a congested area.

Has Cork ever played there in the Premier League? He's not an attacking player at all.

If you look at his career stats, nothing would suggest he's an attacking midfielder, 4 goals in 60 games for us, 17 in a 152 for Rangers (decent team in a poor league)

This season, he has contributed 2 goals and 6 assists.

If he is employed as an attacking midfielder, he's certainly not contributing as much as he should.

I see him as bit more of an all rounder, he's not as attacking as Lallana, but then he's not as defensive as Morgan. I guess that's my problem with him, he's too "average" in every department, without being great.

I that role, I would have someone with a bit of flair, but also a bit of an engine. As we don't have anyone like that (with a fully fit squad) I would rather play Cork there than Davis.

If there were Oscars for footballers, he'd be up for Best Supporting Player. He's Mr Reliable, always gives 100% effort, good temperament and a model professional who just gets on with it, quietly and efficiently.

Roadsweeper that stops every now and then to play the violin. There is more to his game than doing the dependable stuff, some of his balls are superb. He got a standing o from me on Saturday.

Davis £750,000

Henderson £20m

WTF.

Davis was part of the Rangers fire sale when they got binned down the leagues, so we got him for well below his value.

Henderson was young, English and bought from a Premier League rival. I'd also say he's been better than Davis this season and will only improve.

As others have stated, when has Cork played in that position for us? Do you understand Davis's role in the team for us?

If Steve Davis is an attacking midfielder like most of you are suggesting, then his stats let him down badly. As I have said earlier, I see him more of an all rounder; that being the case, I think Cork would be better in that role than Davis.

What is an 'allrounder'? This isn't cricket.
