david in sweden Posted 27 March, 2014 Share Posted 27 March, 2014 ....time runs away quickly, and any young player who hasn't made an impression in the first team squad will surely be out of the door by the time they reach 21. Those with good prospects, like Stephens on loan to Swindon will need to make a real impact in L1 otherwise they won't be in contention for a Prem.spot in the future. Obviously, most fans want to retain the services of Shaw and Chambers (who must be on a par with Clyne now) and JWP is still gets some outings. But what if (some of them) were to move? If the talent is as good as it's cracked up to be, would it be such a bad thing for Shaw to go to Chelsea or Real ..for £30 mill...or more ? and will Schneiderlin ever get to play for Wenger at Arsenal?. My personal take on this is obvious - I'd want them to stay, and have long careers with Saints, but then the lads on the " Academy conveyor belt " will be surplus to requirements in just a few years. Gareth Bale said (in interview) that it was only a dream, but he could never see himself playing for Real..but the money must have helped him decide and he doesn't look out of place beside Ronaldo. The final decisions will be those players ..who want top class Euro football, and the club who (despite not needing to sell)... may get an offer they can't refuse. Meanwhile, the likes of Gallagher, Reed, McQueen and Targett will be warming the bench in anticipation of " their chance to make a name for themselves " before it's too late. ottery st mary Posted 27 March, 2014 Share Posted 27 March, 2014 I would like to see Gallagher and McQueen get more game time before the end of season. Stephens looks good at Swindon and is still more than a possible starter/squad player next season. Will be interesting to see Turnbull before season is over. The manager knows what he is doing...... But me..being greedy..I want more wins and still more youth involved at the right time place.. Very first class in this respect so far. Law of averages some youth will fall by the wayside and a few will go on to have a career elsewhere. Onwards and upwards. COYS:)
norwaysaint Posted 27 March, 2014 Share Posted 27 March, 2014 Even with us, few academy lads go on to command a regular starting place in the prem. I'd say Shaw and Chambers seem to have fully stepped up now, despite promising beginnings I would say the future is still uncertain for JWP, let alone Reed and Gallagher. Players further down the order than those still have a long way to go and a lot to prove. We can hope a few of them make it though.

It is an easy mistake to make to assume that because we have found one or two pearls every oyster will contain one. What may happen is that because of its recent successes more really promising young lads might prefer to come to our Academy than go elsewhere, just like top Uni's for example. So if better kids come in then the overall level of grads should improve. The downside is that many of these kids may have little emotional connection with our Club or ambition to play for it. In which c axe the Academy becomes and entity in its own right, churning out the very best talent in the country but from an intake that also spans the whole country. Simply put, if a lad wants to get on then it may become the situation the SFC Academy is the only place to be. Would then many or indeed many of the Saints 'owned' lads at the Academy might gradually get squeezed out?

nta786 Posted 27 March, 2014 Share Posted 27 March, 2014 I'd like to see JWP on loan tbh. Did a good job at the start of the season, but hasn't stepped up like Shaw and Chambers has.
