KelvinsRightGlove Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 Really sad what's happened to him http://www.theguardian.com/football/blog/2014/mar/26/claus-lundekvam-threatening-kitchen-knife?CMP=twt_gu
Saint_clark Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 Wow. That was hard hitting. I remember seeing him at games a few times in the last 5 years. Glad he's turning it round. Can't believe he was going to Rio to kill himself.
Charlie Wayman Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 Thankfully he seems to have had the mental strength to get through it so let's hope he can keep it together from now on. Others have tried and failed in their rehabilitation as is well documented. Claus must learn to realise that he owes it to his wife and kids to look forwards to new challenges rather than resent the fact that his past life as a star footballer exists now only as part of history. Good luck Claus in your battle and remember all Saints fans are with you all the way. Sometimes it is worth remembering who are the ones who really care about you. alpine_saint Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 I am also glad he has got his life back on track, but still my skin crawls at just how bad he was in the PL relegation season; for me he abdicated his reponsibilty as one of the clubs senior pros, which makes me wonder about the comment that the real problems starting after he retired. Makes your skin crawl! Little bit extreme there Alps! There were a lot of players who went missing in that relegation season, but old Lukewarm was as bad as he could be, I'll admit. Very honest piece and it is great to hear he has gone a very long way towards conquering his demons. Good on yer Claus.
Crazy Diamond Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 It is indeed a very interesting article. I know the family that bought his home in Chilworth after he moved. To this day they receive letters from people after him for all sorts of reasons...
Bucks Saint Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 Amazing read, did not realise he had sunk quite that low; well done on turning it around Claus. Loyal and decent player and deserves respect
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 26 March, 2014 Author Share Posted 26 March, 2014 Helps to highlight how devastating mental illness can be, and that it is completely indiscriminate - it can affect absolutely anyone. He is very lucky to have what sounds like an amazing family. Congrats to him in getting his life back on track, and being brave enough to go public with this. It's not easy to do. washsaint Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 What a great article and fantastic to see Claus has got himself back on track. He was a solid, loyal player for us and, despite Alpine's typical vitriol (what a sad, sad life you must lead), really contributed to Saints retaining their Premiership status for a number of years. Hope he stays sober.

Is it mental illness really? Or as he describes it himself, too much money and not enough to do with his time? Discuss.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 26 March, 2014 Author Share Posted 26 March, 2014 (edited) Is it mental illness really? Or as he describes it himself, too much money and not enough to do with his time? Discuss. Purchasing a one-way ticket to Rio with the intention of a Leaving Las Vegas style blow out. Yeah, that is mental illness. As he said, he was trying to come to terms with no longer performing week in week out in front of thousands (millions if you count tv audiences). Living a pampered life style, and hanging out/partying with celebrities. Yes, that is mental illness. This of course not even mentioning the most obvious part, addiction. KelvinsRightGlove Posted 26 March, 2014 Author Share Posted 26 March, 2014 Claus is an idiot. There is plenty this article has left out. Was there a drink-driving incident too?
Viking Warrior Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 Le Goddard let's hope you don't end up in the situation Claus did . You will not get any sympathy on here . Being dependent on alcohol is one of the most difficult substance abuses to overcome . Well done to claus for achieving that . I hope he can be a role model for others
Mr Saints Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 Vitriol ? Take off your rose-tinted specs; he was f**king awful that season. It was that clown Jakobsson that was the main problem. Claus always needed a dominant centre half next to him but somehow Wigley and Red**** didn't see this.
davefizzy14 Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 I for one wish Claus all the very best and hope he stays well because he was such a loyal servant and a great defender for this club.
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 27 March, 2014 Share Posted 27 March, 2014 Fantastic article and all the best to the bloke. Very loyal and saints through and through. Here's the bit that caught my eye; "One highlight has to be the FA Cup final against Arsenal; that was a big day. It was incredible. When you've been in England for a while and you really get the English footballing culture under your skin, when you see how much it matters to the fans, then you understand what the FA Cup really means. So to get to be a part of that, it was huge." Someone send the article to MoPo.
