pap Posted 25 March, 2014 Share Posted 25 March, 2014 "An international team of astronomers, led by Felipe Braga-Ribas (Observatório Nacional/MCTI, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), has used telescopes at seven locations in South America, including the 1.54-metre Danish and TRAPPIST telescopes at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile, to make a surprise discovery in the outer Solar System. This unexpected result raises several unanswered questions and is expected to provoke much debate. A press conference will be held in Brazil to present the new results and allow opportunities for questions. The conference will be held on 26 March 2014 at 14:30 local time (BRT) and will take place in Portuguese with a summary in English." From the European Southern Observatory:- http://www.eso.org/public/announcements/ann14021/ Intriguing, as Spock might say.

Huffton Posted 25 March, 2014 Share Posted 25 March, 2014 The Borg are pretty much inbred anyway, they'd fit in beautifully. Plenty of space to land on Southsea common now the 250k of the bestest have all buggered off again...

Earth would use Pompey people as a bio-weapon in a last ditch, but ultimately successful effort to stop the Borg's seemingly relentless advance. Portsea Island is utile. alpine_saint Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 I agree, they should present their findings in the international language of love - everybody understands that. I dont make the rules. I have seen a lot people over the years struggle valliantly to get their point across at conferences with English as a second language because of the demands of the international science and engineering communities. The French sometimes try it on, but they are just a standing joke that deflects from the credibility and attention their work gets. Why should a bunch of Brazillian scientists be allowed to buck the trend ?
Window Cleaner Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 Ribas and Sicardy both work in the field of Trans Neptunian Objects (look it up) so it's probably  some unusual observation in that field.

So why shouldn't they be allowed to do a MoPo and present their findings in their native tongue, which somebody else can then translate into English to avoid misinterpretation? Window Cleaner Posted 26 March, 2014 Share Posted 26 March, 2014 You mean anything beyond Neptune? You could say, in the outer solar system? Thanks for that You could always look at Sicardy's web page, gives you some sort of more precise idea of the field they work in (well they work in observatories not fields !!) It's in English for those who worry about such things. You'll see possible lists of events for 2014/15, one of them has probably produced unexpected results. Mind you it's a bit mumbo jumbo, best wait for this evening.

As I said, I dont make the rules. Its just odd and, in my opinion, will have a negative impact on the effect of their announcement. For example, the Q & A will be less spontaneous.
