"An international team of astronomers, led by Felipe Braga-Ribas (Observatório Nacional/MCTI, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), has used telescopes at seven locations in South America, including the 1.54-metre Danish and TRAPPIST telescopes at ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile, to make a surprise discovery in the outer Solar System.

This unexpected result raises several unanswered questions and is expected to provoke much debate. A press conference will be held in Brazil to present the new results and allow opportunities for questions.

The conference will be held on 26 March 2014 at 14:30 local time (BRT) and will take place in Portuguese with a summary in English."

Intriguing, as Spock might say.

kin-ell a Borg box

You lot have got nothing to worry about according to this video.

They talk about adding your biological and technological distinctiveness to their own. Got much of that down there? :)

The Borg are pretty much inbred anyway, they'd fit in beautifully. Plenty of space to land on Southsea common now the 250k of the bestest have all buggered off again...

I disagree. I think the massive gaps in logic would destroy the Borg hive-mind.

Earth would use Pompey people as a bio-weapon in a last ditch, but ultimately successful effort to stop the Borg's seemingly relentless advance.

Portsea Island is utile.

Actually, Spock would say "Facscinating...."

Changing the subject, and at the risk of sounding Anglo-centric, what internationally-respected team of scientists would report in Portugese ?

Brazilian ones?

Aside from the fact that Portuguese is their native tongue, it is also the 6th most widely used language.

I agree, they should present their findings in the international language of love - everybody understands that.

I dont make the rules.

I have seen a lot people over the years struggle valliantly to get their point across at conferences with English as a second language because of the demands of the international science and engineering communities. The French sometimes try it on, but they are just a standing joke that deflects from the credibility and attention their work gets.

Why should a bunch of Brazillian scientists be allowed to buck the trend ?

Well according to you Alps, ALL scientists the world over are corrupt and only interested in securing research funding. So why are you so concerned what language they present their findings in?

So why shouldn't they be allowed to do a MoPo and present their findings in their native tongue, which somebody else can then translate into English to avoid misinterpretation?

You mean anything beyond Neptune? You could say, in the outer solar system? Thanks for that

You could always look at Sicardy's web page, gives you some sort of more precise idea of the field they work in (well they work in observatories not fields !!) It's in English for those who worry about such things. You'll see possible lists of events for 2014/15, one of them has probably produced unexpected results. Mind you it's a bit mumbo jumbo, best wait for this evening.

As I said, I dont make the rules. Its just odd and, in my opinion, will have a negative impact on the effect of their announcement. For example, the Q & A will be less spontaneous. This isnt an injury update or about first team selection to face Cardiff, you know..

Detailed presentation - Portugese

Summary - English.

Maybe you are on to something; maybe the findings dont stand up to scrutiny.

that wasn't the subject of this presser though.

The "discovery" is of an asteroid with a ring system. You can read up on it on the ESO pages.Or even on the Beeb
