Transfers (rumours) thread

The clubs intentions have been to utilise the academy in way to offset the amount of sales. Matt has been earmarked for the first team slot for a while - it will be him. There is no urgency at the club to sign a new LB fwiw. Matt is that highly thought of.

Has anyone actually seen him play? His name is bandied about a lot on here, but I haven't really read anything suggesting he's the next big thing. If he is good enough fine, but the academy well will eventually run dry. It's not a talent conveyor belt, we've just had a very good patch. Young players will keep coming through, I have no doubt about that, but at this level it's about finding one or two absolute top quality players, as we have in Shaw and chambers, not a never ending supply of alright players.

Didn't somebody here post a picture of him in Antigua on the day you said he was at Staplewood? As much as I would love Caulker, I think he'll be lured back to London (and by 'Arry flashing his brown envelopes about)

The photo was posted on twitter 5 days before he was there

Probably posted deliberately to keep Cardiff fans happy!!

I've seen him a couple of times.

Physically miles behind Shaw and Chambers.

I've seen him a few times. Good all round player, but never as noticeable as Shaw was in the U18's where it was achingly obvious to anyone with even a basic grasp of spotting potential that he was a class above.

Obviously players develop at different rates and Shaw is a phenomenon in that respect. Maybe Targett will establish himself as a Premier League player but I'd hazard a guess that it will take him a few seasons to hit that level. Hopefully I'll be wrong and it won't take him quite that long.

One thing he does have is a much better passing range and far superior crossing technique than Shaw.

The reason Shaw stood out was he was so far ahead physically than other players. As said, technically Targett is better and hopefully in the last year he has matured physically as well.

I am excited for him, that's for sure.

Seen him 3/4 times and never been impressed (was dreadful when I saw the U21s get demolished by Exeter U21s last season). Clyne was preferred at LB last season and he is only just younger than Shaw. That said, Saints and England have stuck with him for a reason - players develop at different rates so you never know!

Based on what I saw last year though, he isnt ready for first team football just yet.

Sounds great. Physical development will come for sure. Technical ability is natural and may not always be coached

West Ham signing Diego Poyet. Definitely a shift in their transfer policy towards younger players.

They seem to be on a mission, they've already made one or two good signings. I can only hope the reason we haven't gone for Cresswell is that we are aiming higher...

Am I still allowed to hope we sign Daley Blind once Netherland are out?

Covers LB and DM. Could replace Shaw and Morgan in one excellent move while giving more opportunities to Targett, JWP and Reed.

I think there's a good chance we are hoping we might be able to get him, but I think there will be bigger clubs in the mix.

We have bids in for 2 players, neither of which have completed. We have a manager who is less than a week into the job. We have our best defender and midfielder reportedly leaving as well.

It would be easy to be more than a little worried about how things are going. I have confidence in the board and management, though it would seem they really need to get a shift on with players in.

Are these bids, in addition to the known bids for Pelle and Tadic ?

Disappointed to see Cresswell going to WHU and Caulker to QPR. I thought both would have been excellent signings for Saints. Have to admit that I'm nervous about who we will sign in those areas.

Agree up to a point.

Maybe though our targets are still playing somewhere in South America? Wishful thinking?

Probably but not out of the question. Other deals could be dependent on what WC players do though - Player X will only be sold if player Y currently in the WC signs etc. I'd imagine the whole merry go round will start in earnest once the WC is over.

the WC is over for 3/4 of the teams already, just the elite 7 and Costa Rica left, can't see too many of them containing players who'd want to play for us.

Now that Burnley have announced signing of Marvin Sordell, hoping Danny Ings moves a step closer to saints move

Not only that, but a friend living in Lancs says they are also reported in the local media up there to have had a sizeable bid turned down for Troy Deeney as well although their second offer is expected to be accepted. Sounds like Ings is on the move. Wouldn't mind us moving for Deeney either, always thought he's got a nice balance of athleticism, power and composure, consistency has been his issue but has done very well in the last two seasons, even though Watford went backwards overall last year.

Also disappointed to see Cresswell go to West Ham. I've not seen him play myself, but but pretty much every man and his dog was aware he was Ipswich's best player over the last two seasons.

Caulker connections with twitcher will go a long way. Is he really any good though? The way Spurs discarded him suggests he had/has a lot of weaknesses in his game. He looked pretty good at St Marys, but no where near in John Stones' class.

Agree with being disappointed we missed out on Cresswell.

Not concerned by Caulker going with twitchy though - Although decent at set pieces (attack and defence), he has the turning circle of dinosaur in a corridor - Think Jos in other words...

And I didn't say there were. I said that it's possible that some of the players we'd like to sign might only become available after the futures of WC players have been decided. A bit like the chain when you move house. Didn't think it was that difficult a concept to grasp.....

Should just tell them we'll sign him next summer for free then. They'll soon knock a good few mill off, especially considering he could well flop in the prem and be worth even less

Or he could have a good season and end up at a club who either do better than us in the league or show more willing to sign him than that...

I'm not remotely worried about the prospect of losing out on signing Danny Ings to a bigger club. It's Danny Ings ffs.

I'm not 'worried' either but it would be good to have him in the squad though. We are going to need players to slot in to cover for injuries and suspensions as that's where we struggled last year and we could do a lot worse for that than Danny Ings ffs(!)

Same, and 4/5mill is an acceptable amount of money to spend on a backup striker.

Just seen they've signed Matt Taylor as well as Sordell - what a couple of truly **** signings for Burnley. They're not championship any more.

Clubs will now know we have money to spare and will take advantage of that by holding out for more. They also know that we need new players, and specifically a new striker and so will use that to hold out for more. While spending £4/5m would be ideal, due to our circumstances I suspect it unlikely that we will get anyone for that figure.

Burnley also don't need to sell Danny Ings, so will expect a higher fee in order to part with him. £8m is probably around what we will have to pay for a young, talented, English player given our circumstances.

What gives you that impression?

Rodriguez scored more and did it for more than one season, and looked like a decent all round player. IMO he was also playing in a higher standard of championship then.

You've got a point about consistency, but last season Ings was unreal. Wouldn't have got promoted without him, because he won them so many games on his own. I'll admit that I didn't pay any attention to Rodriguez/Burnley until we were in the Championship but I didn't think he was quite so integral to the team.

He was signed as cover but hardly got a kick for whatever reason. I was watching a profile of the Colombia team before the World Cup and he looked very tidy indeed for them, Napoli and Udinese, not bad going forward and strong in the challenge.

I say he'd be terrific because I think he solves the problem of signing an experienced player who's happy to compete with a youngster, and he wouldn't cost too much either. If you want someone with pedigree to compete with Targett, rather than Robertson who's only a bit older, then he's your man. Robertson sounds like a star for the future, though.
