Transfers (rumours) thread

Cardiff apparently want well over £10m for Marshall so on that basis I can't see us making a move for him.

Certainly debateable whether he is better than Boruc, if you compared the careers of the two Boruc would come out on top, albeit Marshall is slightly younger.

Personally, I think Boruc is too good to be a no2, especially at a club not in the Champions League or fighting for major trophies.

well whoever it is....I'm glad that someone else is addressing this issue.

Not to decry Adkins' time with us, but his main fault was relying on KD as our Prem. goalie and take in Gazzaniga (in lieu of Butland - who is little better IMO) ..as a potential no.2.

KD (for all his excellent service to the club), isn't the real thing anymore, and NA's blind faith in the totally-untried Gazzaniga was totally misplaced.

Someone on here (a while back) said that Cortese had to insisted we signed Boruc, and even then he had to fight to get the No.1 spot.

Forget all the water-bottle incident and Fred Astaire impersonation at The Emirates. Boruc is still one of the better goalies in the Prem. and I'd still start with him next season, but we must have A.N. OTHER to choose from -or in the case of injury.

After Boruc broke his hand at Chelsea, we won only ONE of the next 7 games, and his replacements (KD/ PG) almost doubled our goals against column. That points loss probably cost us a Euro place.

We must have two reliable keepers available.

Marshall on last season's form would be excellent, and of course proven in the EPL (which Fraser Forster, previously linked, is not.).

Gut reaction though is that we're more likely to bring a GK from the continent, Netherlands or Germany in particular.

If looking to build for the future, McCarthy at Reading has looked a good prospect, estimated at £3m in press reports when linked to Swansea.

Mccarthy's the one I'd like to see us sign.

If we spunk £10m on Marshall, then he isn't likely to be back up.

Agreed .

....but would you drop Boruc just on the strength of signing (another) keeper?. If Artur keeps a clean sheet at Anfield - would you drop him in favour of another - even one who cost £10 million ?

surely selection is about choosing the best "in-form " player - not necessarily the one with the dearest price tag.

Prior to our first Prem. season we (reputedly) bid £6 million for Butland  I doubt that he'd fetch anywhere near that now.

NOTE: If we do buy Marshall.... will Cardiff take Gazzaniga as part of the deal? Don't laugh, they might have been impressed by the fact that PG kept a clean sheet when we beat them 3-0 there.

No chance we break our record fee this summer IMO, we'll be looking at significant buys but I doubt our net spend will be huge.

define net spend, if we sell for say 50 million or so that means we could easily buy a player for 15 million or so (which we'd have to do if we're trying to replace Schneiderlin,Lallana,Shaw or Lovren) and still be well within a low net spend bracket. If any of those 4 leave we'd be looking at a significant sum for a like for like replacement.

That's exactly what I meant by net spend, I think the board will be looking to make a transfer window profit. I'm expecting a few for 8 or 10 million from the continent if we pull in 50 million but doubt we'll be hitting the 15 million pound player mark.

Did Guan2.0 not assure us that it's roughly 35 million plus a bit if we get some incoming fees. Then again I don't always believe all I read on this forum, even from ITKs.

I'd think that if we don't spend at least as much as we receive there will be a bit of weeping and wailing, plus of course a few mandatory "I told you sos".

It's not what you spend but rather who you spend it on.

On what is any of that based? Because Les Reed has said on a number of occasions all money from player sales would be reinvested in the team. That is ontop of money they would spend if no-one was sold. That suggests will be spending big money this summer.

must have missed that then, ties in with other info that we've been given though, albeit from a less official source, might be a tidy sum at the end of the day then. Mind you disinformation is spread in devious ways, LR can't back track on that if indeed it's what he's actually said, surprised he's been so forthright over it actually because if we're even a couple of bob short there will be reclamations.

Must be taking a hell of a pay cut. But yeah, fair play - Good signing.

perhaps not....on a "free", if he'd cost them even 5 million over say a 4 year contract that means about 25 K more a week that they can pay him without taking much of a hit.

Being out of contract is a great advantage for desirable footballers, look at Sagna, on the open market he'd cost at least 12/15 million, on a free he's got so much more negociating power.

Tancredi Palmeri ‏@tancredipalmeri

Stoke City interested in Livorno's Paulinho, according to the words of his own president. Pricetag approx 10m €. Superbly smart signing

Someone we have been linked with.

Little bit more on the Stoke story...

On 5 Live Neil Lennon has just said we've signed this Virgil fella from Celtic

He did not. He said that the best players he has worked with at Celtic are Forster, Virgil van Dijk and Wanyama.

He said Wanyama has left and is at Southampton.

The Sun claims that Southampton are ready to put fresh terms to Portuguese defender Jose Fonte in an effort to fend off mounting interest from the likes of Hull City and Queens Park Rangers.

If true, it's about time.

I know literally nothing about Immers, so won't pass judgement on him until I've seen him.

Almost everytime a manager moves clubs, there are rumours of him bring at least one, or two players with him. It doesn't actually happen all that often in reality, and even then it's rarely more than the one.

I have seen plenty of Immers and he's nowhere near the quality of our other midfielders. Hard working, reasonable touch but as was said before: championship quality.

I'm not even sure Pelle would hack in the PL, but he was very strong in Holland last season.

Talented Feyenoord players worth investing in would be Kongolo and Boëtius in my opion. The real gem in the Dutch league is obviously Mephis Dempay, but unfortunaltely, probably out of our league.

38 x 90 minute videos = 57 hours.

Maybe RK has looked through all/some/most of them now and has made a decision that he wants to keep. Hard to sign players on long contracts if the new man is just going to replace them.

This. Would be mad to hand out new contracts before Koeman has an idea about strengths and weaknesses in the squad. Im happy with Fonte, but there are better players out there. The fact that Hull and QPR have come knocking as opposed to (allegedly) Barcelona and Liverpool for Lovren tells you something.

MODS - would it be an idea to have a thread for Saints and one for other transfers???

More on Suarez http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2663432/Barcelona-beat-Real-Madrid-52m-signing-Luis-Suarez-Liverpool-hero-prepares-swap-Premier-League-La-Liga.html

When someone said it would be funny to go for €20m, the release clause is €85m for all save Real/Barca when it is €65m (it should also be noted that £ has increased by bout 7% against the Euro, so Liverpool will be getting 7% less).

Good. Hope we aren't trying to match QPR's wage offer though.
