Jeremy Wilson reporting that Arsenal are ready to take up their option and re-sign Carlos Vela for £3.25M and then might sell him to another club (or then sell him back to Sociedad)

Pretty slick move.

can't they just put a ring through his nose and lead him roun t' market?

Danny Ings may be a good signing, but he is no replacement for Lambert. Don't forget that Lamberts was much more than a goal scorer. Ings scored 21 in the CC, which isn't bad, but he hasn't got the experience to play a major function for the team, at least not yet. But then there may be other interesting combinations: Graziano Pelle, for instance, and if Lallana goes, a replacement for him...

Last year it was easier to 'read' the clubs intentions: Young, technically gifted and an international with potential. That was the recruitment policy. At present I haven't a clue. Does Reed and the board know?

Well I expect so, considering that it's all the same team as before sans Cortese.

Apparently we were gutted to miss out on Joe Cole and we are going all out to land Bobby Zamora, Chris Samba and Nikola Anelka.

Or, maybe, just maybe, our transfer policy hasn't changed a jot. Why would it?

Without Jay, Rickie and most likely Lallana too the forward players we sign will be massively crucial to how we do. Get it wrong and it's a relegation battle.

Serious amount of goals and talent to replace, would think those three got 70% approx of our goals last season.

Morning Paper Talk features a few bits & pieces about players we've been linked with in the past...

- Everton are considering signing Rafa Silva for £8m

- Drogba rumoured to be heading to Juventus (Does this end their interest in Dani?)

- Liverpool to wait unti next month to try and sign Caulker

- Spurs eyeing moves for Lukaku & Lovren

- Utd have failed to agree a fee with Luke Shaw (Not sure that's new news!)

a blast from the past.....

Quite some years back ... can recall some rumour that we were looking at that Croatian keeper ...Pletikosa ??....but think there was some EU work permit issue at the time.???

112 caps later, he's now 35 .....so maybe not the best long term investment.

RONALD KOEMAN will target Virgil van Dijk as one of his first signings as Southampton boss.

SunSport revealed in April that Saints scouts ran the rule over the £8m-rated Celtic stopper against Motherwell.

Koeman is expected to be unveiled at St Mary’s this week and is poised to sanction a bid for his fellow Dutchman.

The Holland legend is a long-term admirer of van Dijk, having followed him since his Groningen days. And just last month, Koeman urged Dutch boss Louis van Gaal to hand him a World Cup place.

Speaking on a TV debate ahead of Brazil, he said: “I still see a role for Virgil van Dijk in this system.”

Koeman is close to agreeing terms with Saints and will need defensive reinforcements after stopper Dejan Lovren — a target for Liverpool — handed in a transfer request.

Van Dijk, 22, is viewed as an ideal replacement for the Croat after a stunning debut season at Celtic following his £2million move to Glasgow.

Several English clubs have been tracking the Dutch ace but Saints have already done their homework as SunSport told you on April 21.

Now the Koeman factor could make a move to England’s south coast even more appealing to van Dijk, who Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell last week urged to stay at Parkhead for at least one more season.

He also stressed that the Hoops had no need to quickly cash in on him — although he conceded the riches of English football can turn players’ heads.

There is a link that definitely adds up. Just hope he is not seen as a replacement for Dejan.

I would put my money on Lovren leaving, unfortunately.

re: Virgil van Dijk - It's nice to be linked with some up & coming players at last after seemingly weeks of outgoings.

I wonder if Koeman is going to change us into a 5-3-2 / 3-5-2 formation?

Immers, entirely from Wikipedia, looks underwhelming: 28, only ever played in Holland, no international caps.

Let's not start buying Michael Neilssons again.

He doesn't look amazing, just a bog-standard average player in the Dutch league. Seems to play as a CM primarily as well, not entirely sure we need one of those.

Indeed, signing 28/29 year olds who have only shown they can do it in Holland would be a risk. If they fail we are either stuck with them or have to get rid at a loss. Same reason I wouldn't take Pelle either.

Agreed, I'm all for Koeman but I hope he's aware of the gulf in class between the English and Dutch leagues. I'd take Ings over Pelle any day.

Beat me to it. Anyone know if he's any good?

Looked quality in the couple of games I've seen him play. He's tall, composed, loves to roam forward, and has a decent free-kick on him. The caveat is that the SPL is a pony league, but he's only 22 and has great scope for improvement. Can imagine being coached by 'legendary' Dutch centre-back Koeman would be a massive draw for him. ;)

What that video says to me is that the Scottish League for half decent players is like playing FIFA on the piece of pi ss levels.

Centre backs marauding forward and taking pot shots at goal? Dear god.

And he takes the direct free kicks. Of course.

All in all, get him in.

Yeah! Who do they think they are? Ronald Koeman?

My Brother in Law is a Celtic Supporter, he's been saying all season that Van Dijk is the player that is simply too good for them to keep hold of at the wages they pay.

Obviously it wasn't against Premier League quality teams, but he took part in 18 clean sheets for Celtic in the League last season.
