Rumours the books were in a real mess.

Kat had no idea where money was going, hence the quick intervene.

The last available accounts showed the club made a £900,000 profit for the final six months of 2012 and a wage bill that was 59% of turnover!

Not an indication of the books being in a "real mess", but actually as far as Premier League clubs go it is a relatively healthy financial position up to the start of 2013.

Hard to know what state the books are in but I think an 8th place finish this season results in around £80m of revenue from the Premier League. That is around £35m more than we got last season. To be honest assuming other revenue streams remained the same as last season I could quite easily see that £35m being gobbled up every quickly by the new contracts, signings, and transfer fees from last season and the first payments for the signings paid this season. Then also consider the £25m+ training ground for which we apparently took out a loan and you can quite easily see why we aren't that comfortable...

I always said he was a decent championship chairman but not up to it at premier league level. Will end up doing a decent job for someone like Ipswich or Bolton.

I think he should be saluted for recognising that he couldn't quite cut it at the very highest level, and sensibly bailed out before he embarrassed himself. The Kevin Keegan of Chairmanship if you will.

No question he could do a job at his level, where you don't need to engage big corporate shirt sponsors or be prepared to work alongside demanding owners. He's the perfect man to drag a club like Sheffield Wednesday out of the Championship for example.

Nicola played a good game and fooled a few fans. £150m and got us to mid table in the prem. . . . :? I wasnt overly impressed

Think we are better off without him - as i said on the day he left

He had many faults, including not maximising money IMO (Left too many players on the books that could have been moved on) but where oh where you get your 150 million I have no idea. I picked you up on this on your other thread, you didn't reply :) :) :) :)

We hit the Prem with a net spend of 3 million, the loan taken out in the first year was satisfied.............. Why do you make this stuff up?

The facts are out there.

Did NC spend circa 150m? . . . Yes! What he recovered is another discussion and not quite as clear. Perhaps if the "facts are out there", you could share them?

Is it a 'fact' that he spent £150m? If so, what on? Don't get me wrong, I believe that he spent more money than he should and know this to be a fact with regard to certain areas. But where is this £150m figure from? Another Saints Web thread again?

stands to reason that if ur turnover is £30m plus and ur here 5 years, ur gonna spend around £150m. FACTS goatboy.

Have NC's detractors forgotten who recommended the club to Marcus Liebherr and where where we would be if he hadn't?He took us out of L1 up to the Prem... Surely he deserves some credit for that?

Even a chairmanship chairman like David Sheepshank could see that a premier league sized club, with a premier league stadium, premier league fan base, premier league training ground and a host of top young players being brought through the ranks that had fallen on hard times and available for a snip at £13m was worth buying if a billonaire wanted to buy a fooball club. Lets not forget Delia Smith took Norwich from league one to championship too.

That sounds like pure speculation to me - some would say libellous in fact. Rumours are just some persons made up junk unless they can be substantiated.

 Negative news = Troll, WUM and libellous

While positive news is lapped up as pure fact and no proof ever requested

Just don’t tell the Window_cleaner as he will report this to the authorities, and you'll be looking at a ten stretch :)

I don't know about libellous. Pretty vague though. What books? What money? Club finances? Loans? Expenses (lol)? Source? All valid questions I reckon.

Also, the fact that (if true) these discrepancies have been spotted and addressed is hardly a negative.

Ironic isnt it, that he was known for being a hard task master and a demanding boss, yet when similar demands were put on him he quit.

Still, you're right what you say, he did a good job for us in L1 and the championship yet was starting to look out of his depth in the premier league so did the right thing walking away before we had any embarassing "i'd love it, love it" interviews in the fight for 7th with Man United this season.

Suspect this could be deemed libellous.....going to put a source?

A statement about a person is defamatory if it tends to;

a) expose the person to ridicule, hatred or contempt

b) cause the person to be shunned or avoided

c) Lower the person in the estimation of right-minded members of society

d) Disparage the person in his business, trade, office or profession.

d) is the one that fits.

HTH.

Don't waste your time.

Could have been a Ridsdale or a Storey or a Venkys or a Fernandes the list goes on but he wasn't. He got us to where we are through (in the main) very acute decision making surrounding himself with good, competent people and obviously a lot of cash.

It f****** amazes me when I think back to what a shower of **** we were, to the standard and strength of the team we have now and people disregard him because they feel he's not up to it and the accounts are a mess - allegedly.

I'm not getting drawn into a 10 page thread about why he wasn't up to it and will say no more. Thats why my post count is so low because I usually can't be arsed to get into debate about things like this but on this occasion, I couldn't help myself.

Jesus Christ, now you've gone and ruined a perfectly good 'let's kick Cortese in the bollux' thread which could have run for pages and pages. People like you should be banned from this site.

As a banker and someone who was seemingly obsessed with details, I cannot for one moment think the books were in a mess. And as for libel, I think it would only be libellous if it was written or intimated that the books were in a mess on purpose, ie that there was something nefarious going on.

Why would you want to ruin a great rumour started by someone who starts a rumour and then suggests the rumour?
