Matthew Le God Posted 19 March, 2014 Share Posted 19 March, 2014 (edited) Rumours the books were in a real mess. Kat had no idea where money was going, hence the quick intervene. The last available accounts showed the club made a £900,000 profit for the final six months of 2012 and a wage bill that was 59% of turnover! http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21712482 Not an indication of the books being in a "real mess", but actually as far as Premier League clubs go it is a relatively healthy financial position up to the start of 2013. Hard to know what state the books are in but I think an 8th place finish this season results in around £80m of revenue from the Premier League. That is around £35m more than we got last season. To be honest assuming other revenue streams remained the same as last season I could quite easily see that £35m being gobbled up every quickly by the new contracts, signings, and transfer fees from last season and the first payments for the signings paid this season. Then also consider the £25m+ training ground for which we apparently took out a loan and you can quite easily see why we aren't that comfortable... Will end up doing a decent job for someone like Ipswich or Bolton. I think he should be saluted for recognising that he couldn't quite cut it at the very highest level, and sensibly bailed out before he embarrassed himself. The Kevin Keegan of Chairmanship if you will. No question he could do a job at his level, where you don't need to engage big corporate shirt sponsors or be prepared to work alongside demanding owners. He's the perfect man to drag a club like Sheffield Wednesday out of the Championship for example.

Even a chairmanship chairman like David Sheepshank could see that a premier league sized club, with a premier league stadium, premier league fan base, premier league training ground and a host of top young players being brought through the ranks that had fallen on hard times and available for a snip at £13m was worth buying if a billonaire wanted to buy a fooball club. Ironic isnt it, that he was known for being a hard task master and a demanding boss, yet when similar demands were put on him he quit. Still, you're right what you say, he did a good job for us in L1 and the championship yet was starting to look out of his depth in the premier league so did the right thing walking away before we had any embarassing "i'd love it, love it" interviews in the fight for 7th with Man United this season.
