Am I right in thinking that a few of the Fulham youngsters have also recently been getting some first team game time? Young centre back Burn and striker Woodrow(?) have looked pretty good in recent weeks. I'm guessing those guys arent playing today though. Surprised we've put Gallagher in the team with him now fairly firmly in our first team plans.

The game is Sunday so plenty of time for him and Chambers to recover, both likely to be on the bench anyway

He has continued to play for the under 21's throughout his time wight he first team. Take Saturday for example, if Gallagher only played for the first team he'd only have had 5 minutes of game time in a week, which isn't good for his development when he could also play for the under 21's as he did last Friday and today. No harm with him playing for the under 21's and then appearing on the first team bench and that is what they've been doing with him.

More that we're so short upfront that we'd risk an injury rather than him being tired. I know he'd only be likely to be on the bench, but imagine if Lambert or J-Rod got injured in training this week... :uhoh:

That's fair enough then. Obviously needs game time, just fingers crossed everyone stays fit, and he can come off the bench and grab another goal or two (or five) by the end of the season!

3-0 final score?

Gallagher played for the under 21's on 14th March, and then was on the bench for the first team vs Norwich on 15th March. It isn't the first time we've done similar, he won't play 90 minutes often for the first team and still needs game time in his development.

If Lambert or Rodriguez were to be injured we have more options than just Gallagher.

If Lambert or Rodriguez was injured between now and Sunday the front four in the 4-2-3-1 system could be made up of a mix of...

Lallana

Ramirez

Rodriguez/Lambert (whichever wasn't the injured player)

Gallagher

Ward-Prowse

S.Davis

Guly Do Prado

In any case Gallagher isn't going to be tired playing today and then on Sunday.

Upon first glance that's a stronger than normal Saints side vs a weakened Fulham team.

Saints will want to finish in the top four in order to prolong their season by getting into the end of season playoffs. Saints now only have 3 games left to make it, so may need to put out strong sides to get the points they need...

None of them are really forwards though are they mlg? I mean they play in attack obviously but you wouldn't want Gulym Davis or Lallana leading the line would you?

But the question was if one of Lambert or Rodriguez was injured what options do we have. In which case the one of Lambert/Rodriguez that wasn't injured would start upfront, plus we'd have Gallagher still on the bench. The rest of the squad shuffles round the other attacking midfield spots.

Perhaps interesting that we played Gallagher, Seager and McQueen in the same starting 11? I'd always assumed they played in the same position (i.e. centre forward)

There again, playing forwards in traditional fixed positions isn't really 'The Southampton Way' so maybe not so much of a surprise (either that or I've no idea what the trio's best positions are!)

Isn't McQueen an AML?

The U21's have been using a fluid formation in the final third all season. Sometimes they even play a DM as an AM. McQueen is usually a winger but he has the frame and presence to play centre-forward so he has been getting games there. Seager is usually a centre-forward but has been playing more often as a winger for the U21's. It's all a part of their development I would imagine although always interesting to see what position players settle on in senior football.
