CB Fry Posted 10 March, 2014 Share Posted 10 March, 2014 Poyet now getting the same reaction as Poch, after Sunderland lost to Hull. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/26514159 Not really. They're in the relegation zone, and have had a trip to Wembley already. Sunderland fans having a pop at Gus' s selection are pretty thick.
Glasgow_Saint Posted 10 March, 2014 Share Posted 10 March, 2014 Not really. They're in the relegation zone, and have had a trip to Wembley already. Sunderland fans having a pop at Gus' s selection are pretty thick. I dont think many are moaning, in fact a quick look at there forum suggests they are absolutely delighted with Poyet. The league cup final was massive for them and the city. despite the result the fans bloomin loved it. I know a few Newcastle fans and they even admit (through gritted teeth) that they are/were very envious of Sunderlands Wembley trip.

ottery st mary Posted 10 March, 2014 Share Posted 10 March, 2014 IMHO people claiming to be Saints fans should never want to swap with other teams just because they might then get to Wembley. What next for those that do then? They might as well openly admit to being skates as the skates obtained the FA Cup at Wembley a few years ago. Ottery my dad took me to the Dell as a six year old but in 1954 so I am really old I looked up to you when I was a little boy..........even when I stood on my orange box. Chewy Posted 10 March, 2014 Share Posted 10 March, 2014 Simple answer right now is no. They are at risk of being relegated and have won nothing. We are at no risk of being relegated and have also won nothing. Added to which, if they reach the final and play arsenal, they will be in the Europa league whatever the result of the final and that is a poisoned challice. But ... Two trips to wembley and a potential cup win is rather tempting. On balance the answer is no for me, but I can understand why the question is asked and why some would rather the glory of the cup than league position. But the fa have made the league far more lucrative than the cup, and with that in mind I think the league is more important; right now we are safe and they're not so I'd far rather be where we are than where hull are. Serious question. If qualifying for the Europa League is a poisoned chalice that you'd rather we didn't qualify for; exactly what are your hopes for Saints for the next, say, 5 or 10 years? What do you aspire to?
Chewy Posted 10 March, 2014 Share Posted 10 March, 2014 Fair point. I think I aspire to a consistent league finish And the odd dabble with Europe, but only when we have a squad capable of coping. Hull don't, and neither do we. Right back and central midfield aside we are well short of cover as evidenced by our recent form with a handful of injuries, and right now I fear a european campaign would leave us seriously struggling. Swansea and Newcastle in the last two years are a case in point. Spurs have a squad but they'll fail to reach the champions league because of the Europa league this season IMHO. I'd love european football, but I worry about the impact it would have. I know that's fickle, but hey, I'm a football fan!

Fair enough, and a good answer (albeit one I don't agree with, but that's football). I personally would rather we qualified and worried about next season, next season. I don't fear relegation any more, in fact I loved the lower leagues (although 2 years in League 1 was just about enough). I'd rather we took whatever "success" we can along the way; whether that's a cup and/or a European campaign. The only other goal is Champions League, and I think that's enormously unlikely, so we may as well have a little fun on the way, even if it does mean we don't hit the heights of the top ten every season. It's worth the risk IMO, as otherwise I genuinely don't see the point.
Chewy Posted 10 March, 2014 Share Posted 10 March, 2014 A perfectly valid argument, and in principle I agree that what's the point in competing if you don't try and win. Economic reality though is that being average in the premier league is far more lucrative than winning cups and gaining promotion. It's all a bit crap but that's the reality. I don't like it, but I'd rather be us than hull right now. Can totally understand the opposite view, though.
SarniaSaint Posted 10 March, 2014 Share Posted 10 March, 2014 In the Would you swap with Sunderland thread I leaned no, too much risk of relegation. Definitely wouldn't swap with them now. But how about Hull? Would you swap our 9th and 99.999999% safe, with their semi-final against a third tier side, but not safe from relegation (5 points clear with 10 games left)? Note, swap positions/cup only. Same manager, squad, academy etc. NO Time to move on this has been done to death and is ****in boring
shurlock Posted 10 March, 2014 Share Posted 10 March, 2014 (edited) Another round of everyone's favourite mongboard game. The entire premise of asking whether I would rather be in Hull's position but with Saints squad is frankly ludicrous. Akin to asking if I like blondes or brunettes but then slipping in that the blonde is really an albino who is really a bloke. Nope I would rather be in Saints league position with Saints squad. shurlock Posted 10 March, 2014 Share Posted 10 March, 2014 So we can't play the "mongboard game" but you want Hull fans to do it? Do I? Making comparisons is one thing; but playing a game of cake-and-eat it hypotheticals and nonsequiturs is another. For instance, its hard to think of many scenarios in which we would be in Hull's league position and at the same time have four full internationals - international recognition is a reflection of how well we've done in the league. tajjuk Posted 11 March, 2014 Share Posted 11 March, 2014 Assuming we swap position but keep the team (and I'm presuming the manager to) then we might not be in Hulls position because Pochettino would have fielded a weakened team, in fact if we were much closer to relegation like Hull then its even more likely we would have done. So we wouldn't have got to an FA Cup semi-final. We also seem incapable of beating Sunderland whatever team we put out so would have probably lost at the weekend anyway. We've had a good season, will finish in one of our highest positions for years, we have a great squad of young players, more coming through, have played some excellent football and our captain (and maybe others) are going to a world cup with England.(seriously when was the last time we had a player likely to be a first teamer in an England World Cup team?) Just enjoy the moment rather than what ifs, it's a great time to be a Saints fan and I'm sure fans of 100s of clubs would love their club to be in the same situation ours is in.
