Mauricio Pochettino - record away wins

I loved the Strachan era but what we are seeing now is something else. That squad relied heavily on Rory Delap, Paul Telfer and Brett Ormerod, hardly the most technically gifted players. Not knocking what Strachan achieved with that squad, we were solid, but our team now is full of pace and skill - I absolutely love watching us play. Disappointed that we haven't turned a great season into a phenomenal one with a better cup run, but we have a very small, young squad and we have been given plenty of great results and performances to enjoy this season. For the record, I think MP is going right to the very top. Hoping he is as excited about our young squad as he says he is and sticks around for a good few years, although I share worries about the club's leadership post-Cortese but I guess we have to wait and see on that one.

Not usually one to wade into the 'troll'/'negativity' debate on here but for what its worth I think some on here could do with tuning into Hull/Palace/West Ham games for a few weeks and see the difference in style. Some of the comments I've seen post-defeat really are incredible, and they make me wonder how I'd react to someone speaking like that in real life. Not sure I could take them seriously.

Superb return for about 50m quid.

I hate to break it to you, but £50m over 2 years is peanuts in the modern game, especially when the purchase price of the squad prior to that was pretty much nothing. If you thought we were buying anything other than mid-table security with that level of investment, you were simply mistaken.

Are you including being fourth at Christmas in your "going backwards" six months?

Being that MP has got nowhere near that level, I'd happily "go backwards" from that point if we could get there again.

Why does 3rd place on November 22nd not count? I seem to recall that during the Arsenal game on the 8th we were 2nd at one point but the record books will show us 3rd at the end of the day. Pity that the international break and the injury crisis that exposed are thin squad came immediately afterwards.

I enjoyed the WGS era, but to compare that team to today's is stretching credibility a bit far. OK so the wee man got a great deal out of a bunch of journeymen players due to his fitness regime, but really the quality of the football was nothing like what we see today. The PL has moved on apace since 2003, the top 6 or 7 teams are vastly better than the top 2 or 3 teams then. To be fair WGS was also hampered by a very thin squad, outside of the first choice XI and a couple more we did not have much else.

The post you quote isn't referencing the respective ability of that team against our current one, but the relative achievements - it's a fair question to ask and a hard one to call.
