When was the last time a current Southampton player played in a World Cup finals game?

I know some of the legends in the banner played in World Cups, but not while at Saints.

Has there been anyone since Terry Paine for England v Mexico in 1966?

Bridgey definately came on v Argentina in 2002 Minty and I think in the final group game as well. Think Kenwyne Jones had moved on by the time T&T qualified for one WC Finals.

We may have a winner here, he left in the summer of 2007. Trinidad and Tobago competed against England in the group stages of 06.

Keegan was still technically a Saints player in 82 when he played 26 minutes and missed a sitter. Of course he never played for us again, but I'm reasonably certain he signed for the Barcodes after the WC finished.

Delgado was with us when he played in 2002. Maybe if he hadn't played in the WC he may have actually performed for us.

found him, Saganowski

Saganowski wasn't in the Poland squad in Germany 2006.

Grzegorz Rasiak, however, was. He had been on loan with us for three months at the end of the 05/06 season, with the deal made permanent in May, before the tournament began. He played only 5 minutes in the tournament, at the end of their final group game against Costa Rica, with both sides already eliminated.

Kenwyne Jones came on as a sub against Paraguay in Trinidad & Tobago's final group game against Paraguay in the same tournament, which kicked off five hours after the Poland v Costa Rica game, so Jones is the most recent Saints player in a World Cup.

Perhaps more importantly.... how many goals will be scored by Saints' players at this World Cup?

Oh Lord, the arguments on here when a Saints player gets a World Cup Winners Medal having scored in the Final.....

And then completes his Permanent move to AS Roma..........

When was the last time a Saints player played a full game in the world cup finals: Has to be Shilton - hand of god game.

You clearly have forgotten England V Germany in 1990

and then some smart arse would point out that he also played in the 3rd place play off.

just done a bit of wiki research - and it all came flooding back - especially the hilariously typical quote from WGS

Delgado moved to Southampton in 2001. Unfortunately, Tin – as he is affectionately known to his legion of fans – was dogged by injuries which restricted him to only a few games during his time with the Saints. Southampton tried to get him back to fitness after the injury he picked in Necaxa prior to the 2002 World Cup Qualifiers, but to no avail.

It might have been a different story had the striker refused to play while injured during the 2002 World Cup. The pressure on him to play was enormous, as Ecuadorians believed that, with 9 goals during the 2002 World cup qualifying campaign, he was indispensable; and naturally, Delgado dreamed of playing in a FIFA World Cup. All that led to his decision to play despite injury while heavily medicated on painkillers. Upon return to England, it was found that his injury had become chronic, effectively destroying his future in Europe.[2] He also alienated manager Gordon Strachan by refusing to learn English, and Strachan felt the player had been forced on the club and was very high maintenance. When pressed for his plans for the Ecuadorian, Strachan replied "I've got more important things to think about. I've got a yoghurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my priority rather than Agustin Delgado."[3]

WGS already had a track record with South Americans at Coventry I seem to remember, also wanted nothing to do with Anders Svenssons "flair" play, didn't he make some sort of reference to a particular piece of skill from Svensson as a "circus trick".

Not the most modern thinking of managers perhaps.
