FairWeather Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 When was the last time a current Southampton player played in a World Cup finals game? I know some of the legends in the banner played in World Cups, but not while at Saints. Has there been anyone since Terry Paine for England v Mexico in 1966?
FairWeather Posted 6 March, 2014 Author Posted 6 March, 2014 Actually Shilton in 86 must be it - right?
Hatch Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 (edited) and scored v Mexico in 2002 Edited 6 March, 2014 by Hatch
Colinjb Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Wayne Bridge in 2002? Came on as sub a couple of times. Delgado had departed us for about 2 years in 2006.
Colinjb Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Anders svensson perhaps? Again in 2002, his free kick sent the Argentinians packing.
saint1977 Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Egil Ostenstad in 1998 I think. Bridgey definately came on v Argentina in 2002 Minty and I think in the final group game as well. Think Kenwyne Jones had moved on by the time T&T qualified for one WC Finals.
shurlock Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Bridgey definately came on v Argentina in 2002 Minty and I think in the final group game as well. Think Kenwyne Jones had moved on by the time T&T qualified for one WC Finals. Kenwyne was still around in 2006

Trinidad and Tobago competed against England in the group stages of 06.
Hatch Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 was Kamil KOsowski still with us in summer of 2006 and wasn't there another Pole at the same time.
Colinjb Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 was Kamil KOsowski still with us in summer of 2006 and wasn't there another Pole at the same time. Tomasz Hajto? He went after a few months to Derby, Kosowski was only ever on loan.
Hatch Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Tomasz Hajto? He went after a few months to Derby, Kosowski was only ever on loan. found him, Saganowski
Colinjb Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 found him, Saganowski Good shout! He wasn't here for 2006 though, and I don't believe he was in a Poland world cup squad for 2010.... Did they qualify?
dubai_phil Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Think that gives all the info needed for Bridgey
VectisSaint Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Keegan was still technically a Saints player in 82 when he played 26 minutes and missed a sitter. Of course he never played for us again, but I'm reasonably certain he signed for the Barcodes after the WC finished. Delgado was with us when he played in 2002. Maybe if he hadn't played in the WC he may have actually performed for us.
Saint Garrett Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 I remember Pahars playing, that may have been a Euros though?
Whitey Grandad Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 I remember Pahars playing, that may have been a Euros though? They have never qualified for the finals. Pahars is their current manager: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latvia_national_football_team
jjsaint Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 They have never qualified for the finals. Pahars is their current manager: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latvia_national_football_team Latvia qualified for Euro 2004, but IIRC he only played a minimal part.
Whitey Grandad Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Latvia qualified for Euro 2004, but IIRC he only played a minimal part. Yes, I should have said World Cup finals.
stevegrant Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 found him, Saganowski Saganowski wasn't in the Poland squad in Germany 2006. Grzegorz Rasiak, however, was. He had been on loan with us for three months at the end of the 05/06 season, with the deal made permanent in May, before the tournament began. He played only 5 minutes in the tournament, at the end of their final group game against Costa Rica, with both sides already eliminated. Kenwyne Jones came on as a sub against Paraguay in Trinidad & Tobago's final group game against Paraguay in the same tournament, which kicked off five hours after the Poland v Costa Rica game, so Jones is the most recent Saints player in a World Cup.
Kingsland Red Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 The answer is Kenwynne Jones, started against England and was a sub v Paraguay for T&T. He was the only Saint at the 2006 world cup. Stern John was also in that side.

Kingsland Red Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Rasiak was registered as a Tottenham player with FIFA (?)
Colinjb Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Rasiak was registered as a Tottenham player with FIFA (?) I believe he had already agreed to join us at that point but his registration was still with Spurs until the transfer window opened.
saint si Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 and scored v Mexico in 2002 The first ever world cup goal by a then current Saints player, i believe?
Whitey Grandad Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Perhaps more importantly.... how many goals will be scored by Saints' players at this World Cup?
dubai_phil Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Perhaps more importantly.... how many goals will be scored by Saints' players at this World Cup? Oh Lord, the arguments on here when a Saints player gets a World Cup Winners Medal having scored in the Final..... And then completes his Permanent move to AS Roma..........
bender Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 When was the last time a Saints player played a full game in the world cup finals: Has to be Shilton - hand of god game.
Tamesaint Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 Is there a possibility that England could play Argentina in the World Cup? If so, we wii be able to see how Adam Lallana makes Messi look s hite
St Chalet Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 When was the last time a Saints player played a full game in the world cup finals: Has to be Shilton - hand of god game. You clearly have forgotten England V Germany in 1990 and then some smart arse would point out that he also played in the 3rd place play off.
Sour Mash Posted 6 March, 2014 Posted 6 March, 2014 You clearly have forgotten England V Germany in 1990 and then some smart arse would point out that he also played in the 3rd place play off. He wasn't our player then.
shirleysfc Posted 7 March, 2014 Posted 7 March, 2014 Is there a possibility that England could play Argentina in the World Cup? If so, we wii be able to see how Adam Lallana makes Messi look s hite No, we won't get out of the group stage
Kingsbridge Saint Posted 7 March, 2014 Posted 7 March, 2014 I don't think a CURRENT Southampton player has played in a World Cup finals game. Do I win a coconut?
Lighthouse Posted 7 March, 2014 Posted 7 March, 2014 I don't think a CURRENT Southampton player has played in a World Cup finals game. Do I win a coconut? Boruc in 2006.
dellboypete Posted 7 March, 2014 Posted 7 March, 2014 Didn't Augustin Delgado play for Ecuador in the Finals whilst with us? (pure guesswork as I can't be bothered to do the research)
dellboypete Posted 7 March, 2014 Posted 7 March, 2014 just done a bit of wiki research - and it all came flooding back - especially the hilariously typical quote from WGS Delgado moved to Southampton in 2001. Unfortunately, Tin – as he is affectionately known to his legion of fans – was dogged by injuries which restricted him to only a few games during his time with the Saints. Southampton tried to get him back to fitness after the injury he picked in Necaxa prior to the 2002 World Cup Qualifiers, but to no avail. It might have been a different story had the striker refused to play while injured during the 2002 World Cup. The pressure on him to play was enormous, as Ecuadorians believed that, with 9 goals during the 2002 World cup qualifying campaign, he was indispensable; and naturally, Delgado dreamed of playing in a FIFA World Cup. All that led to his decision to play despite injury while heavily medicated on painkillers. Upon return to England, it was found that his injury had become chronic, effectively destroying his future in Europe.[2] He also alienated manager Gordon Strachan by refusing to learn English, and Strachan felt the player had been forced on the club and was very high maintenance. When pressed for his plans for the Ecuadorian, Strachan replied "I've got more important things to think about. I've got a yoghurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my priority rather than Agustin Delgado."[3]
Window Cleaner Posted 7 March, 2014 Posted 7 March, 2014 just done a bit of wiki research - and it all came flooding back - especially the hilariously typical quote from WGS WGS already had a track record with South Americans at Coventry I seem to remember, also wanted nothing to do with Anders Svenssons "flair" play, didn't he make some sort of reference to a particular piece of skill from Svensson as a "circus trick". Not the most modern thinking of managers perhaps.
diggers Posted 7 March, 2014 Posted 7 March, 2014 graham Souness just called to say its Ali Dia, scored the winner for Senegal against Brazil in 98
