JN9 Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 Lambert has done more for us than Lallana to date. I'm not sure I'd agree with that... In fact I'd argue that Lallana has done more to deserve his place. I'd argue that Lallana has played as much of a part in our rise from League 1 as Lambert (I know, its all opinions and what not...), but he also stuck with us during the dark days when he could have moved on when our future was bleak to say the least. Then he becomes the team captain and represents the club very well and now will probably be going to the World Cup (and potentially as a key figure in the squad)... ...Well, that puts him ahead of Lambert for me. Of course, much love to Rickie... He's a swell guy too ya'know...

Saint Garrett Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 Lambert is our talisman and is coming towards the end of his career. Personally I'm not sure there should be any players who are still playing on the banner, but Morgan and Lallana could be argued to go up there. If Lallana sticks with us for the whole of his career, then he's up there with Le Tiss for me.
Golden Balls Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 If Lallana sticks with us for the whole of his career, then he's up there with Le Tiss for me. You beat me to it. He has the potential to be a full on club legend and similar status to MLT. Especially if he captains us to a cup win.
Andy Durman Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 Legend is a very over used word very rarely used correctly. Legend, typically, is a short episodic, traditional, highly ecotypified historicized narrative performed in a conversational mode, reflecting on a psychological level a symbolic representation of folk belief and collective experiences and serving as a reaffirmation of commonly held values of the group to whose tradition it belongs. Lallana requires more history to become a real legend.

Wurzel Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 Keegan's signing was a major coup and gained us loads of media interest but due to his short stay probably had the smallest on-field impact of any of them. Too early yet for Lallana, but then it's too early for Lambert as well and he's been up there a while.
shurlock Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 When did Lambert go up? Ridiculousy early if you ask me, though his subsequent performance has gone a long way in vindicating his inclusion.

Millbrook Saint Posted 7 March, 2014 Share Posted 7 March, 2014 Lallana, great player for us he is, would only be a legend in my eyes if he sees out his career with us, otherwise he's no more than a great player who once played for us.

hypochondriac Posted 7 March, 2014 Share Posted 7 March, 2014 Who said it is a legends banner? I always thought it was to show the type of club saints are. So that encompasses legends, people who have stayed here their whole careers and shown loyalty and then show how the club can pull amazing signings out of the bag like Keegan and Shilton. shurlock Posted 7 March, 2014 Share Posted 7 March, 2014 He was the largest reason for us being back in the prem and English top scorer last year IIRC. You're missing my point. I'm asking when he was included in the banner? Which season- the season we got promoted from L1? Either way, it was before the achievements you mention. As I say, what he's subsequently done more than vindicates his inclusion.
Goatboy Posted 7 March, 2014 Share Posted 7 March, 2014 If the gloom merchants are right he'll be off soon anyway. We wouldn't want to be like the Newcastle fan who had Andy Cole's mug tattooed on his thigh just before they sold him.

La BoIS Saint Posted 8 March, 2014 Share Posted 8 March, 2014 I think there's a case for the criterion for inclusion being that if you say the player's name then the word association is Southampton. That would cut out Keegan and Shilton and certainly bring in Big Ron. Lambert I suppose would be known to most for his association with us and if he's in it's hard to exclude Lallana. And even though people may argue it's harder to do it today, Strachan's squad was comparatively weaker. At least I get that feeling.
