Matthew Le God Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 Its a terrible channel. Yesterday's listings from its 7pm start... Snog, Marry, Avoid Snog Marry, Avoid Don't tell the bride Hair And today... Total Wipeout Don't tell the bride Festivals, sex and suspicious parents Call me a TV snob if you want, but that is a waste of license fee money. pap Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 Had some good shows. How Not To Live Your Life The Revolution Will Be Televised I really liked Cyderdelic.
Fowllyd Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 The Mighty Boosh started life on BBC3 I think, as did numerous other comedy shows which ended up going more mainstream. There's also a shed load of bilge on there, but that goes for pretty much any TV channel as far as I can see. I love Family Guy, but then that's an import which could be shown on any BBC channel. Actually, now I think of it I'm not sure if the Mighty Boosh was ever on any other channel.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 I quite enjoyed Uncle. Wilfred (though not a beeb production) was good too. Agree with Pap. I really liked How Not to.. & The Revolution. Some of the docs are good too. Gay sportsmen, racism, addiction and mental health have been dealt with quite well. I was surprised how much I enjoyed that Reggie Yates show on South Africa the other day too. There's obviously crap on there, but some good stuff too. Fowllyd Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 The other thing to remember is that people are moving away from broadcast. Yes, that's a valid point - and all the more so given that BBC3's target audience is up to 34. I guess the younger you are, the more likely you are to watch online. pap Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 Yes, that's a valid point - and all the more so given that BBC3's target audience is up to 34. I guess the younger you are, the more likely you are to watch online. I turn 39 this month, and apart from a bit of sport, I don't watch broadcast TV. Everything else is online, be it news, scripted telly. I don't watch "event TV" like talent shows and I've no interest in soap operas. It's weird, because I can remember the days when we only had three channels (although C4 launched when I was seven). TV used to have a real communal aspect back then; there was a good chance that your mate at school had seen what you had. That really disappeared with satellite TV; broadcast looks threatened as a medium now streaming video has matured. The likes of Netflix and Amazon are doing their own shows, people are crowd sourcing funding for things like the Veronica Mars movie. There's a growing grass-roots industry facilitated through stuff like YouTube. Funding models are undergoing a revolution, and while we may never see a crowd-sourced revival of Firefly (mwah), the days of throwing a show up as some structural conceit for advertising revenue might be coming to an end. That's probably a good thing. While I'll lament the loss of BBC3, it's been a very long time since I've watched a show on the broadcast channel. Ex Lion Tamer Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 (edited) Glad they saved BBC4, some of their music documentaries are really good. Does BBC really save that money by making BBC3 online only? Surely they'll have to cut the number of new programmes as well? Edit: Yes, they are cutting the programmes as well, it would help if I read the story first. Edited 5 March, 2014 by Ex Lion Tamer
CB Fry Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 Glad they saved BBC4, some of their music documentaries are really good. Thoroughly enjoyed their recent 3 - part documentary on seventies prog legend Brian Pern.
Lord Duckhunter Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 Here's an idea, why dont they make BBC 3 subscription only, that way the people who want to watch their shiete can pay for it and the rest of us can stop subsidising it. An even better idea would be to abandon the TV poll tax and make all the BBC subscription only. Its 2014, not 1954 FFS

benjii Posted 5 March, 2014 Share Posted 5 March, 2014 BBC 4 certainly has the best documentaries on UK TV. Excluding sports coverage, the Channels I watch the most are probably Sky Atlantic, BBC 4 and Channel 4, with a fair smattering of BBC 2. The Light Channel and BBC 3 are simply ghastly. whelk Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 Not much love for bbc3 although the 'Our War' documentaries were terrific. Doesn't mean that sort of programme won't still get made though. 2012/13 costs
Lighthouse Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 Only really watched (repeats of) family guy too. Wont be missed by me personally although it's not as sh*t as ITV, which I literally haven't watched for a minute since they stopped showing F1 back in 2008. Possibly the occasional football game but even their FA Cup highlights show is crap.
norwaysaint Posted 6 March, 2014 Share Posted 6 March, 2014 My satellite dish (used for UK channels) got nudged out of position in a storm four weeks ago and I still haven't bothered with the three minute job of realigning it. I just don't bother with broadcast TV at all nowadays, it has just lost its attraction. For decent programs, I use iplayer (or local equivalents) or netflix. I use the radio (streamed through tune-in radio) or internet for news. I'm in my forties and if watching TV while it's broadcast seems like a dated concept to me, then the medium really must be dying. I'm a big fan of the BBC and effectively closing their trashiest branch seems like a wise move to me.
Lighthouse Posted 13 March, 2014 Share Posted 13 March, 2014 The only decent original show on there is on tonight, Bluestone 42. Anyone else a fan?
BlakeySFC Posted 13 March, 2014 Share Posted 13 March, 2014 It's a pretty sh!te channel, but occasionally some interesting documentaries get put out on there and unique comedies that aren't considered 'mainstream' enough to put out on BBC 1/2 (such as Jack Whitehall's Bad Education for example).
