Jos on the move ?

a couple of sites have stories suggesting that Jos Hooiveld wants a move away in the summer. A bit sad in one way, as he seems to be a popular guy and a good help to newcomers.

BUT being 4th CB in line, it's obviously difficult to get regular game time unless someone else is injured, and now even Yoshida is showing better form and ahead of Jos in the reckoning.

Unfortunately, Jos is a victim... .of our success. Coming, as he did , at the start of the Championship season, he put some bite into a leaky defence, and formed an immediate bond with Jose Fonte that limited Saints to only 2 defeats in 20 games that season. I think his vital contribution in scoring in BOTH games v.WHam (1-0 home win and 1-1 away,) gave us a 4 valuable points that meant automatic promotion .....and that made Wham fight for the play-off spot.

However, as with quite a few others on our books at that time, he didn't make the transition to the required Prem.standard. Now at 30 , he's obviously looking to his future which I hope will be a successful one - wherever he chooses goes, as it would be unkind of Saints' to offer him an extension with only the promise of a bench place, until he's too old too play at a decent level.

Of course, some people will only recall his unfortunate record of "own goals ", though in his defence I think some of them were totally unavoidable...and as he has netted 9 goals FOR Saints in 70-odd apps. and I think we have probably come out on the PLUS side of that equation..... BUT there's no disgrace in someone " knowing their limitations.... and admitting it.

I, for one, think he deserves a vote of thanks for his past contributions and brave defending which often meant spilling blood for the cause.

Really great character, was a bit like Dejan is with the fans now, when we were in the Championship.

He was a huge addition and I don't think we'd have gone up without having him alongside Fonte.

Good Championship player, not good enough at this level though.

All the best Jos and thanks for playing your part in our promotion.

I read on SSN that he is considering his future as he is down the pecking order.

He isn't Prem quality but I for one will thank him for playing our rise to the Prem.

If we do eventually get rid, I wish him luck where ever he goes.

Never lacked effort, often lacked luck but always had the quality to be a key part of our team in the Championship. One of our very best players that season. He enjoyed some good patches in the Premier League as well, but I think he is coming to the end of his time here. Will wish him the best if he goes.

Another victim of our quick success. I know we have given him stick but really it should be the manager that gets the stick for playing him when he is clearly not good enough for the premier league. He has been great for us helping us to promotion but he really now needs to move on. A bit like richardson harding etc great in our promotion but clearly not good enough to make the step up. All deserve applause for being a part of what we are now. Without them we wouldn't be where we are today

I will leave it for Duncan to confirm, but believe he is the highest ever own goal scorer for Saints.

That aside, a great buy, has done his bit and wish him all the best if he leaves.

I'm sure Duncan will be willing to clear that up ... For £35.

Mmmm......possibly?..... ..but Chris Baird had a pretty dodgy record, too. Don't know if we came out ahead when he played for us.

Some players are just plain unlucky with deflections and can't get out of the way.....but it not the same as Gareth Barry at SMS last season ..playing the ball back to an invisible Joe Hart and into his own net.

Jos comes across as a great character, but a part of me thinks that he is also quite fast in passing on the blame, or finding something else to do so (like the press)?

When we conceded goals he always seemed to look around for someone to point his arm towards, and sometimes it would be his fault (or no one's fault for that matter). Of course recently there hasn't been a place to hide.

Last year when Fonte got injured and he came back to the side, he was also very fast to come and say he had proven "critics" wrong...

Good luck if he does leave, but I'd expect a slash in terms of his future wages.

Also is it that he does not have the quality, or just that he has had a downward spiral of terrible luck which has zapped his confidence?

I think a fresh start, might be the break that he needs. Reading might well give him a go, or a team at the bottom 3rd of the prem. Could be the remaking of him.

Remember crouch at Villa? Terrible. Moved on brilliant. This happens to many players at clubs.

A defender who has a nasty habit of intercepting balls into the box whilst stood facing goal two yards from the goal line, is going to be a defender that creates his own luck (bad luck in truth).

That was Hooiveld when he joined us. Terrible at Celtic. Instant impact here.

Sometimes when you make a mistake n other games, the pressure makes you pick the wrong choice. Sometimes you have to deal with the situation. It a difficult situation and a difficult place to do something with the ball. What if we left it and an attacker got on the end of it. Perhaps he could have had a call from a team mate. Wrong place, wrong time?

Yes I like the player and think he can still make it in the premier league, with the right move.
