a few changes.

24 teams in the finals

top 2 in each group go through with the top 3rd best teams going through, 8 other 3rd place teams go into a playoff

the qualification games will take place from thursday to tuesday, which seems a good idea

the hosts (france) who dont have to qualify will make up the numbers in one of the groups and their games are friendlies

England in pot 1

Scotland and wales in pot 4

gibraltar in pot 6 (who cant be drawn with spain)

It was obvious that Gibraltar would be drawn in Spain's group, and then moved. Completely wrong imo. If Spain won't recognise Gib, and thus refuse to play them, they should have been made to forfeit the two matches and the 6 points.

How can you have 2 teams in a competition where they can't play against each other for 'political' reasons?

I'm a Scotland fan, and I think with the team that Strachan is putting together we might actually have a chance of qualifying from that group. It will be incredibly tough given that we'll more than likely be competing with Ireland for a play-off/best placed 3rd spot, but I reckon we can do it. Euro 2016 qualification was our aim when Strachan took over, and even though it's a tough group, I reckon it's very achievable.

What would happen if they both got through to the final? (Unlikely I know :) ) but hypothetically?

A very good question, and one I was wondering too. I wonder if there are a load of uncapped Brazilians, Argentinians, etc, that they could give Gibbo nationality too? ;)

FIFA are strictly neutral when it comes to individual countries' politics

Because they might be at war (Russia/Georgia in previous years), the two countries might not recognise each other as countries (North/South Korea) or the people might hate each other due to historical events (I think Armenia and Azerbaijan have been kept apart since the Soviet Union collapsed)

They made the mistake of letting Bosnia and Serbia compete in the same qualifying group a while back and the crowds spent most of both games hurling flares and other missiles at each other.

Then they would play each other. In a neutral country it'd be far easier to keep rival fans separate with a large police presence.

That would create an absolutely ludicrous precedent. For example Israel would switch to the Asian qualifying zone and qualify for the world cup each time by barely playing a match, considering practically none of the neighbouring Arab countries recognise Israel as a sovereign state.

Which is fair enough. If you enter a FIFA/UEFA (or anyone else for that matter) tournament, you should have to accept the other countries competing or not take part in it at all.

It's hypocritical to say 'hey we want to take part but we don't want to play team X/Y/Z'. If you're in a Muslim country you should respect Muslim laws, so if you're in a FIFA competition you should respect FIFA rules.
