A season that held so much promise...

Even I was feeling excited back in November.

Now I feel like we are back in the Alan Ball management years. Figthing to keep our head above water in the PL, depending on a couple of players staying with us because we probably cant attract decent signings ( we dont know if we have any money anymore), sod the other competitions.

We are 8th! Our highest ever Premier League finish is 8th.

39 points from 26 games in mid February and only 3 points behind Man Utd in 7th.

Yes, today was very disappointing. But keep some perspective ffs.

At the moment. You have no idea whats going to happen over the next year, especially over the summer.

And the highlighted part is being to sound pathetic. Manyoo are not the team they were now Ferguson has gone.

Have you completely taken leave of your senses, or are you just delighted to have an opportunity to spout negative tripe just because we lost a 5th round cup tie. I really cannot get my head around all this hysterical reaction. I was feeling pretty pi $ $ ed off about the events earlier today for a couple of hours - but that's about it. Anyone would think we just sunk to the bottom of the league. You are behaving like a spoiled brat IMHO

Loved Alan ball era, family club, good football and the best saints player I will probably ever see at his pomp. We finished tenth second season, with no money spent so could argue we did as well as were doing now and we took the cups seriously rather than the ridiculous decision today.

That is the Southampton I am proud of. Fighting against all odds and achieving a run of 27 years in the top flight. Give me that over a few cup runs anytime. As for breaking into the top 6, I never believed we would. Always happy to just dine at the top table. We are having a great season, but if we finish 17th next it will still be a good season.

AS - showing what a prize plank he is! What a surprise.

Yeah, we're having a terrible time.....

8th in Prem and no danger of any relegation battle

Possible finish as high as 6th

Best footy in my lifetime

A billionaire running the club

Youth academy that is the envy of any other club in the UK

Yeah....it's terrible being a Saints fan isn't it Alpine? And then you wonder why people take the mick out of you!

I'll give you all that but what's the point of all this if we're not going to try to win games? Where's the pride and the passion today? Who can honestly say that they can wear their Saints shirt with pride and when challenged about our attitude to the game say "Yeah, we're doing great thanks, we've done enough this season and we can pick and choose which games we want to turn up to".

I think you are a complete tw*t, but are spot on with this one ;)

This season had so much potential. We started well and we should be finishing top 4, instead, we're languishing in 8th. No cups to play for after today is also a huge disappointment. In my opinion, I feel that today's performance was probably a reaction to some news that the players heard before kick off. I speculate that they had just found out one (or more) of the following:

a) The club is being sold

b) Pottechino is leaving

c) Ramirez, Lovren or Fonte (or all of them) are out for the long term (possibly may never play again)

The season has fizzled out and is now looking like an embarrassment. It's a shame that any drive for success has been replaced with the acceptance of failure.

What? The little old bargain-boys of Southampton that almost did a Wimbledon post relegation? Or maybe Coventry is a better example...

LOL. Boo frickin hoo. LOL. We lost a game of football. The FA Cup is not what it used to be...primary focus for a team in our position right now is Prem consolidation. LOL

You don't think we've consolodated in the Premier League? Jesus.

Boo hoo indeed, you're an effing nutcase.

I am sure it will pass but have not felt so gutted about a defeat for many a moon. Especially when Adam and Steve Davis telling us how important a game it was contrasting with Adam Johnson basically saying he doesn't give a **** and doesn't get why fans do.

If this is anything like the standard of your posts (which is does seem to be) then, quite frankly, good. Whine, whine, whine, just because others have differing opinions. On an internet forum. Where the point is to express your opinion.

Not sure what alpine was expecting more from this season, apart from the FA Cup which was IMO an inexcusable display. But top ten is a good, very good showing for a club like us. We're not going to qualify for Champions League. We likely won't qualify for the Europa League either, except with a cup win.

I wonder where people genuinely think we can go from here. We're a club that puts a benchmark on finishing 8th, and a supporter base that laps that up, many of whom prioritise that over a cup win.

Am I missing something? We have seen some excellent football from Saints this year - probably the best we have seen since the Strachan years. I am losing count of how many teenagers have played for Saints this year (I think that it is seven, but I am sure that someone will correct me). We were in League 1 three seasons ago, and we are likely to finish 8th or 9th in the Premier League this season.

I agree that the summer is likely to be interesting. MP may well leave, and my guess is that Luke Shaw is off as well. But the foundations of the way that the team play and the ethos of the team are firmly in place. We have the best youth policy of any team in the country. As long as the changes are managed well (and given the way that the NC departure was handled that seems likely), then we can look forward to next season being equally as good if not better.

The hype of the Autumn was ridiculous. We were never going to finish in the top 6 given the depth of the squad and the inexperience of some of the team. I agree that the team selection for the Sunderland game was a mistake - which I think that MP now realises.

The doom and gloom merchants on this forum wind me up. What do they realistically expect? After 40+ years of watching Saints I can honestly say that this has been the most enjoyable season since 83-84.

Season well and truly thrown away.

Tragic. :(

"Tragic"?? Seriously Alpine, do you think that might be a slight overreaction. It is hardly tragic is it, even if you truly believe the season has been thrown away. Personally I am quite chuffed to see my team comfortably sitting in 8th in February. There have been some events in my life that could be deemed tragic, but Saints current situation is not even remotely close.

Ha! Are you really saying that you cannot tell who the WUMs are? I don't mind a bit of WUMing but its the constant and tedious nature of the current batch of WUMs that is the problem. I guess its not your fault, you are doing what you think is right and need some direction from the people who are making money from this website/product.

The line between "Happy Clapper" and "Wrist Slitters" is about an atom's width on this forum. If you are negative you are the latter, if you are positive you are the former. When put like that, I'd rather be a happy clapper any day of the week.

The trouble is that according to the "characters" on here you are one or the other. Apparently you can' t have a balanced view I.e. criticise when due - praise when deserved.

I think he's the best mod. The competition is woeful to be fair, so its a bit like being the slimmest person at weight watchers but you can only beat what's in front of you. Just mike seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Jimmy D takes things to heart and is like a pubescent 15 year old girl. At least chalet contributes to the threads and replies to your PMs. That said thing I'm sure Steve Grant regrets not giving me the job when I applied for it.

Our aim this season was to finish higher then last season and push for a top 8 finish, with a postion between 8th and 12th being a ok/good season.

I said 11th or 10th this season and anything higher would be great, however after the great start we all raised expectations to top 10 and finish as a min and ideally top 8, however with Osvaldo incident and not signing anyone in Jan, i said top 10 with a bit more blooded youngsters and helping us build a good squad for next season to finish top 8 or higher.

If MoPo stays and he is allowed 2 top quality signings again this summer and 1-2 squad players i feel we are gonna be in Evertons postion next season.
