West Ham vs Saints - Build Up

This is an absolutely MASSIVE game for Saints.

Win and we will probably stay 8th, maybe even go 7th for a couple of hours. Draw and we will be 8th, lose and we will probably be 8th but Newcastle's result could potentially mean we fall to a disastrous 9th for a week or two.

I'm so glad we f*cked off the FA Cup last week to concentrate on this vital fixture.

Definitely. I'm up for it ! This could be a defining point in our season.

Right, we've done the 'sarcastically pointing out how exciting 7th is' routine for a couple of months. Please can we move on.

you know what smirking, i'm not one to brag - i'm not a braggard - but given the hadrian's wall angle my pontius pilate pun i thought was v.good. I felt a little thrill of accomplishment bout that. I spose it's how lambert feels when he scores a goal or carroll if he successfully traps the ball with his feet.

Apparently Carroll, can trap a ball further than I can pass it! Still useful not to have him playing though, given WH's style: like athletic pub football, one awkward cuss who bullies the opposition with his size or is very fast, with the ability to actually control a ball occasionally confusing everybody.

With key injuries, West Ham will go out and try to kill the game to squeak out a draw.

I'd say probably 0-0 or 1-0 saints, especially if Lovrens back.

totally, we know exactly what's coming here. I've seen this game a few times already. West Ham will be set up to frustrate & it will be difficult to create clear chances. We might scrap one, or i spose they might on the break. Bookies is offering 8/11 on the under 2.5 goals market which i reckon is pretty much like finding money in the street. Lump on yo!

They have been struggling for strikers all season. Nothing new here. Fat Sam has bleated on and on ad nauseum about it, despite them buying every striker in the country a couple of years ago. Doesn't seem to make much difference, Nolan scores their goals. We are not exactly blessed with strikers ourselves.

does it really matter, the primary role of a striker at WHU these days seems to be to knock the ball down for their midfielders following in. They'll find someone to do that I expect. What we need to concentrate on is closing their midfield down and if we can rile Nolan enough to get him sent off again that would be a bonus.

Let's put out the best team for the day:

Davis ©

Clyne, Hooiveld, Yoshida, Shaw

Wanyama, Davis, Ward-Prowse, Lallana

Guly, Lambert

Should be strong enough to beat the Hammers.

Hooiveld is out with an eye injury. So what Academy starlet will be blooded instead?

Well they did bring in Borriello who's now injured, Carroll is back but suspended and they've usually been able to rely on Cole at least from the subs bench but he has a bad back. So its a new twist on an old problem.

Like Charlie says, Cole will probably play but a half fit one shouldn't provide too many scares in the air, esp if Lovren returns.

True though assuming that Cole doesn't play the whole 90mins - who will do that job? Diame, a CB? Not a lot of options there.
