West Ham vs Saints - Build Up

We can have 'em. West Ham, the porno brothers, Clattenberg. They're all rubbish. Have some faith. It's not like it's the Academy of Football or anything. Anyway, Pochettino and the players owe us one. Fat Bloke's rubbish too.

Looking forward to defeating West Ham and going on to tweak the noses of the Liverpools and Manchester uniteds of the league in the run-in. All the makings of a splendid last third of the season. We could soar up the table and even Everton are looking like heading into a bad run. Up the Saints!

No it's not (nice straw man you knocked over there!) Our league position is great. It's also the perfect and rare position to have made a real go for the FA Cup.

I don't think many would disagree with that view - but we stuffed up, we've all had our little whinge (me included), and now we can hopefully get back to watching some entertaining league games for the next 12 games, and cling to the hope of finishing 5th...and then 6th...or 7th...maybe 8th...

Seriously though, If the team gives 100% effort, I for one will still have enjoyed the season as a whole.

PS Anybody remember 1983/84 season? What was the highlight?

Nobody remembers runners up do they?

oh...and we also got to the semi finals of the cup that year, but people rarely talk about that do they?

Even if we had beaten Sunderland, we still had at least 2 other matches to win to get to the Final.

PPS I frikken HATE Sunderland!

Not only did they cost us 4 points in the league, they knocked us out of BOTH cups AND have our stripes!! ;)

Don't worry. Nolan will be telling Clattenburg what to do, so he wont be able to get any decisions wrong.

This ^ (or is that these?). I hope we batter them, but they are a bogey team, we're away from home and we don't like teams that play like they do. We have ****-tenburg. Too early for Lovren too? Meh... 2-1 defeat.

Just read on the BBC Sports page that ****tenburg will Ref us on saturday. Oh! Dear! What will Adam say this time? http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/images/icons/icon13.png

Overall we seem to be very disciplined where refs descisions are concerned, with the odd exception here and there. If we go into this game knowing that we are going to get chuff all off Clattenburg, as I don't see him as the kind of bloke who would let accusations slide, then that will make it an even bigger test for him.

Lallana being sent off in the 64th minute for something very innocuous would be most interesting.

The decision to appoint Clattenburg to officiate this game means we've lost it, so here is a case where I would fully endorse MoPo swapping 6 key players for journeymen. Allardyce will have the WHU players going in at a hundred miles an hour, occasionally with 2 feet, and a Saints red card is clearly going to happen.

Amusing that Clattenburg is kept away from Everton for years and we get him again in weeks. Speaks volumes for our standing in the game in this country.

There must be some mistake.. Im sure the geniuses on here assured us that the minimum we could expect from the excellent decision by "someone" within the club to report him meant that he wouldn't off officiate one of our games for a while.

I don't understand this - you're usually such a bright and shiny optimist.

There's always the reverse psychology to consider - that Clattenburg might not want to make calls that reinforce the idea that he's taking it out on the team.

It appears that only applies if you are a PL team hailing from the North West, North East or within the boundaries of the M25...

Hmmm.....IMO Wham supporters are amongst the most arrogant in the league. They think they are a big club but they are only a tin pot outfit, marginally bigger than the Orient. I was hoping they would get relegated. Living beyond their means and due a stadium they do not deserve or never will fill. At least a win for us might help them to have an uncomfortable end to the season.

So what you're saying is that Clattenburg reffing this game, is the fault of one or more posters on here, and/or the club for reporting him after the last game? Blimey, without you, we wouldn't have a clue what was going on.

If that's what you want, fair enough but I disagree entirely.

Finishing 17th would mean going through the whole 2004/05 season again. Wigley, Redknapp, Davenport, Bernard, Jackobsson, Folly, Van Damme, Delap, the last minute goals against Everton, Arsenal and Boro. That 3-2 against Villa, 1 away win all season, that 4-1 at Fratton Park. The only difference would be it's Kevin Phillips scoring on the last day instead of Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

You would happily sit through ALL of that sh*te again for a cup win?

If you are enjoying the games, they aren't pointless. That's the ENTIRE point of watching any sports. You don't get paid a £50k bonus if Saints win the Cup, You're not going to put it on your CV. If you are enjoying the games, that is the point.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree. Some of my fondest memories of following Saints are relegation dogfights of the 90s. We didn't play particularly good football, but it was dramatic and enthralling, and we had players on the pitch who would have died for the cause. When you talked about the 2005 season you forgot the mention the last-gasp win against Norwich and Higgi's late equaliser at Palace. No goal we score this season will bring the joy those did, because there is nothing riding on the rest of our games. The reason we look back at '05 the way we do is because we got relegated. What about the Great Escape in '99? I think most fans remember that year pretty fondly, but if we had lost to Everton on the last day we'd look at it very differently.

I take great enjoyment from watching the football we play now, but there is now almost zero excitement left in our season. To throw away the chance of a great cup run the way we did was totally unacceptable and a disgrace to the club and the fans.

They really are the biggest selection of f*cktards. Claiming to be part of footballings biggest, and for what reason ? They really are an ugly club right now in every sense of the word.

As per that thread love where one is comparing our crowds by cherry picking a season of our administration and lowest ebb.

I guess we will have to disagree.

I wasn't really following Saints in 1999 but I don't think I would have remembered that season fondly at all. I'm sure people have great memories of Delhurst and the Everton game but that's probably about it. I also think a lot of people look back on that season with rose tinted spectacles about out team and how plucky and determined they were. I don't think people who went to Charlton and watched us get spanked 5-0, or 7-1 at Anfield particularly enjoyed it. I can't imagine the 1999 version of SWF being full of hope and togetherness after that.

If we stayed up in 2005 I'd still have viewed it as a sh*te season with a couple of crucial goals at the end to keep us up.

19th century football is a compliment for though joey essexes. And I thought cherrypicking was bad on here. Almost want MLG to unleash the dogs of war.

So you would rather we were fighting for relegation then ? That competing to the levels that we are is not exciting ?

Was our exit from the club really a disgrace ? Really ?

Its all a bit over the top really isnt it

:toppa:

So you would change places with sunderland ? Fight relegation with the chance to get knocked out by a top side despite playing a full strength side ?

So you dont think being top before Xmas and competing with the top sides, having the media fawning over our play and players isnt exciting ?

Starting 3 reserves in the game against a bottom 3 side that made 9 changes is a disgrace ?

It is a bit over the top really isnt it ?

To clarify, I meant: Yes, competing to the levels that we are is exciting. I'm loving the league season, free of relegation stress.

And yes, playing a weakened team against Sunderland's reserves was a disgrace. Even the West Ham fan agrees:

5. What have you made of Southampton’s season?

Been an excellent season for you lot, with the amount you spent you would expect to be where you are. I just don’t understand the cup game last week? Why on earth does he play a weakened team when that has to be the biggest game of the season. In my opinion you had a massive chance to get to Wembley. If that was us I would be furious.

Does anyone give a damn. Our season ended Saturday

I do. Every time Saints play a match I want them to win. I want them to go on a phenomenal run and to be regarded by everyone as the most exciting team in the league, and I want to see at least two of our players finish the season in such awesome form that Hodgson has no choice but to take them to Brazil.

Season ended Saturday my ar5e!

Well said ! The pathetic whining from some supporters beggars belief ! We areas good as safe. We can play without fear. Pochettino can experiment a little bit and we can be building for next season. IMO we have a feast of football ahead of us and to coin a phrase 'we have never had it so good' !

I already booked my ticket for the end of season boat cruise next weekend. Lucky to get a boat with such short notice after our season ended so abruptly at the Stadium of Light... We should also close down this match thread seeing as there won't be a game against West Ham... Now we wait for the transfer window to open!

Norwich missed loads of absolute sitters in their game at Upton so am confident we will have our share of chances.

All for Lambert to miss from 3 yards out :mcinnes:

This is a defeat.... Mind you Sunderland had win (and therefore defeat) written all over it!:lol::lol:

I have a mate whose family keep a west ham season ticket going in the memory of a late relative... Following on from the Sunderland game and having to sit in the home section during the 4-1 capitulation last season, you can imagine why I am not going to this again this year.

I fully expect them to kick the crap out of us, Dickinberg to give us nothing and for the team to play crap after the poor showing in the cup... after all, what is there to play for now.

Not sure I get the pessimism, West Ham have improved but they really haven't done anything special. Villa are sh*t at home, Swansea are sh*t away and Norwich are just sh*t in general. The draw at the Bridge is probably their most impressive result but even that was just a park the bus, 0-0 job.

If we won at Hull, we can win here. especially without Carroll.

OMG I am going to agree with Dalek. Really beggars belief some of the pathetic crap written on this forum about season being over. What ever happened to wanting to see the team win every game of football, to put one over on our rivals (i.e. every one of the 19 teams in our division) and just enjoying individual games. It has hardly ever been about winning a competition whether that is league or cup, that is just the icing on the cake when individual games go well. The season is not over, I'm looking forward to beating the Scousers again, beating Wet Sham an their pathetic football ethic, and putting one over the mancs on the last day of the season. Would the same people on here who are moaning about season being over be saying the same if we were playing the Skates at St Mary's next week? And if we manage to get up to 6th (still possible) then that would be nice, but its not the be all and end all of the season.
