Sunderland 1 Saints 0 Match Reaction

I'm as disappointed as any Saints fan at the defeat today. Was really looking forward to watching that draw tomorrow with our name in the hat, but it wasn't to be.

But surely if it's true that Pochettino does not value the cups and cares only for the league, then we should be feeling confident about the next 12 prem games? If indeed it's league points he craves more than a cup win and Europa league place, then we have to trust that he will have the players fired up and turning in the performances we know they are capable of.

Starting with the West Ham game, let's get behind our team and finish this great season strongly. COYR

Wouldn't be best pleased if I were a Saints fan. Never going to win the League but definitely safe. The Cups are the only realistic thing

they can win yet Pochetino rests half of his team. Quarter Final place up for grabs. He mustn't realise how important The FA Cup is.

"Rests half of his team" :mcinnes:

So here's a different perspective for the bedwetters to chew on when they finally dry their eyes (congrats on winning the bedwetting final by the way...surpassed all previous attempts by a county mile)

Saints had 'three' stonewall goals today f*cked up by two of our most highly rated players and one so called neutral....Lallana missed a one yard sitter...Lambert missed a one yard sitter and Gully got him self one on one with their goalkeeper when he was ruled offside, when he was clearly onside by a country mile......Not our best day at the office for sure...but on another day that game would have been 1-3...

As for calling for Potchettino's head....I've never heard of anything so pathetic in 40+ years of following the sport....words totally fail me.....This has truly been a memorable day.......Shame on you!

Nonsense. We all think the world of Pochettino but he isn't above criticism. He got it wrong.

But what if 7th gets a Europa league spot? Will we start playing a weakened team if we move up a place in the league?

Do you agree that Lambert and Lallana missed one yard sitters and Guly was on side?

Yes of course but choose any match and you will find what if moments. The manager doesn't give the cups the same importance as league games. This was reflected in the team selection and more significantly the performance of the players.

JRod and Fonte weren't 100% fit

Chambers and Clyne are 1st team equals

And a first team regular when we were top 4 (Wanyama) was preferred to Cork

So the only players we "rested" were Boruc and Morgan

I make that 18% rested, not 50% as football punditry 'expert' Michael Owen would have us believe.

Good question. I can see him blooding more youngsters during April/May. This with next season in mind and would be more beneficial than using not quite good enough squad players like Jos and Guly. Poch clearly doesn't fancy the Europa and if we were on course to qualify via the league, I think he'd go with youth and claim he is looking to the future (not a bad thing IMO).

Anyway, this all points to the fact that Poch is planning for next season and I don't think there's much chance of him leaving, far more likely that he is in this for the long haul.

Looks like the PR team are getting some OT in this evening.

Can you go back and let everyone know that a big chunk of the fanbase are seething tonight, probably feeling a bit betrayed, fook knows how the 850 that travelled 650 miles today are feeling.

Are you saying Lambert and Lallana didn't miss one yard sitters?.....and Guly was offside when he broke though their defense?

We may have not conceded goal and created loads more of those chances if we'd played our strongest line up.

I know my low post count and 'positive outlook' look suspicious but I am a legit fan and been a close follower of the forum for years, just usually choose to read not contribute.

I have massive respect for the hundreds who went up today and they deserved a lot better.

Almost woke up at 4:30 our time to see this one live. Really glad I didnt!

Well in NZ kick off was 01:45 but I stayed up and went to bed at 04:00  I stayed up

as it was the first Saints live game I could see on TV and it was a pretty gruesome match but

at least when it was over I went straight to bed.

As others have said I really feel sorry for the Saints fans who actually attended, their trip home

must have been horrendous.

All in all a bad weekend for results as not only did Saints lose and that pimpey lot won :( but in Cricket

Australia won against South Africa :( and NZ look like they will lose against India. :(

Ah well life goes on so roll on the next set of games :D

If the fans feel like they do then how must some of the players feel. it's now obvious to everybody that football is more about the Premier League and the money than it is about actually having a go and winning a trophy. Does this mean we'll have open top bus tours of the city if we stay up? If you're a gifted young kid then come to Saints to learn your trade but **** off as soon as you've made the break through because that's as good as it gets.

Very disappointed in the result and the performance, but before the Yeovil game I wasn't bothered about the cup anyway. It is a little odd that the coaching staff didn't fancy giving it a real go in the cup this year having reached this stage, but it seems that we're going to focus on getting good results in the league instead.

Quite funny seeing the reactions of some on here though, you would've thought we'd been relegated again. We're still on course to match (if not maybe better) our best ever Premier League finish with a talented, young squad - definitely a damn sight better than we could've hoped for this time 5 years ago.

' Match our best ever premier league finish'

You do know football existed before 1992 Mikey? We aren't matching anything, we might finish 8th but we aren't matching a best of anything.

It's not the 80s anymore Turkish, no matter how much your faded Adidas and receding hairline might want it to be. We play in the Premier League, not the First f*cking Division.

I didn't say that we were going to match our best league finish ever, did I? We're on course to match our best Premier League finish.

So were going to match our best finish since the top flight was given a new name 22 years ago. Brilliant. It's not matching anything, unless you believe everything sky feeds you.

Still annoyed at that gutless, directionless, embarrassing performance.

I think that's what gets me the most, the selection was wrong, but it was the complete lack of effort over that 90mins. You've not been able to say that much in the last 4 or so years, but today was a horrible flash back to our wilderness years. Reminded me of that Bristol Rovers cup tie from a few years back, we didn't seem to know what we were doing that day either.

It was just a mess.

Indeed. I don't care if they don't value the cup. I value the cup. And I want us to at least try to win every game. This is not mutually exclusive from thinking that the Europa league would be difficult for clubs like us. Going out with such a whimper is just wrong.

You're right, I am a horrible product of a Sky TV generation. I truly don't know the meaning of the word football. Alternatively, you can look at what I said as a way of looking back over the last 22 years of the club's history and drawing a comparison between then and now. However, you're clearly just in it for the wind up and it actually makes me feel a bit sorry for you that you have to go onto a forum to try and pick fights to entertain yourself. Haven't you got a wife and kid? Maybe your time would be better spent with them, pal.

Likewise. Silly me but I thought we had progressed, I thought we were better than this but apparently not. Underneath the attractive new facade the old Southampton still lurks.

I agree. Just come back from the theatre. Couldn't really cocentrate on the production - I am so annoyed.

Funnily enough, I just came back from the opera, but in contrast, I concentrated splendidly, not being particularly troubled by our vapid performance and exit from a dying cup.

No it's not the old Southampton. The old Southampton wouldn't have treated the FA Cup with disdain. The old Southampton wasn't a project.

You're right, it was a club we all love, but being incredibly honest it was a mess that couldn't see further than May of each year, stuck with a golden generation of loyal academy players but who really wouldn't be that great elsewhere. All this combined with a 19th century ground that in all fairness was 75% responsible for those key results in a season.

Does anyone seriously believe the crap spouted about JRod, Morgan and Cork being too fatigued after Tuesday's game to be considered starters in this match? Ask yourself would they have played if this game against Sunderland had been a league game - I think we all know the answer so don't patronise the supporters with this whitewash. These guys are fit and trained to play twice a week - if they're not why are we paying them so much? Compare having to play two football matches in four days to the work load of a pro tennis player. A footballer plays ninety minutes but is not involved every minute of the game. A tennis player can be expected to play five hard sets of gruelling tennis, albeit with a short break every two games, then go out and do it again two days later so let's put the fatigue excuse to bed. Either that or there's something seriously wrong with the training regime of our players.

Some of you lot on here are deluded.

If the team played to its potential and lost then you have to look at management - was it tactics/selection. HOWEVER...the team out today did not play to their potential, a lot of poor performances from players who should have been desperate to win a cup and their poor performance on the pitch is their fault and therefore today has to be the fault of the players.

You could then argue were they not motivated, but if a footballer for our club cannot motivate themselves to be up for a game like this then they should not be wearing the Southampton shirt so again I can't blame this on MoPo.

The players out there today let down the manager, the fans and their team mates.

So many people on here seem to think players are invincible and love using MoPo or any manager for that matter as a scapegoat.

A legend known as Nigel Adkins once said: Hard work beats talent, if talent doesn't work hard. - Our talent did not work hard today so was never in with a chance.

"MP doesn´t care about the cup.....but still plays his best 2 players"....

Lallana is 1 presumably?

I didn't see Cork, Lovren, Schneiderlin, Boruc, J Rod in the starting X1 ... who do you think is Saints second 'best' player?

Guess you'll say Shaw ..... he's good, but he's not our second best / second most important player.
