Ludicrous team selection. Utter madness.

Disappointed yes, but we had no divine right to win that game, and we might still have lost if Spiderman, Lovren, Fonte, Rodriguez, and Boruc were starters. From what little I have seen of the game, and from the last 20 or so minutes of commentary that I heard, it wasn't the selection that lost us the match, it was the SELECTED that blew it by underperforming.

Of course, but that's not the point. We would have had a much better chance of winning/drawing. The team that played against a none-too-shabby Hull first team on Tuesday put in a performance that was light years ahead of the weakened one playing against Sunderland's reserves.

Sunderland had a week off, Saints had a heavy midweek match against Hull, so it made sense for Saints to rest some players, however the rhythm and coordination was lost.We had no choice but to play Hooiveld and Maya (who had a great game against Hull) and it was a risk to play out of form Vic. imo Wanyama should have been subbed by Cork in the second half.

Yes. Against Hull.

When are people going to wake up and smell the coffee, the FA cup doesn't mean a thing to a lot of people in the game and supporters. The gate shows that today, the performance of the players shows that today and the side both managers picked showed that. Its finished , gone, its like the Rolling Stones a nostalgia trip for the over 40's. Nobody wants the reward that comes with it, particularly in a world cup year. The premeirship is the be all and end all of everything.

,

People like Rickie and lallana can go on about it, how important it is, but its just talk. The difference in attitude and application today was stark. Does anybody really think the players were busting a gut to get a reply? Not a chance they went out hoping to win, rather than dying to win -.

Like many, disappointed not to go through - but Duck's post is spot on; the once magical FA Cup isn't the drawcard for many Clubs it used to be. It's all about staying in the League and finishing as high in the table as possible. The rotation of players and Media commitments by Perez has been consistent in both Cup Competitions this season.

No need to feel upset. You're just clearly not that intelligent. Sorry if it offends you, but you aren't.

Ah sweet little kraken and his passive aggression.

So you have have taken enough interest in my posts to assess my intelligence eh? I thought you had planned to ignore me?Remember you said you didn't like how this place affected you and turned you nasty? Still as long as you are not hurling direct insults you can still convince yourself to be a nice chap eh.

And academic achievements and subsequent career don't make me overly concerned about your view (based on posts on football forum no less) of my intelligence.

Should I be worried about your interest in me?

Tell me how I should play it.

Ta.

Not really. I am not impressed with someone who flings the word mong around as an insult. Downs is close to heart and I find it offensive,

Other than that play it how you like

So we rest players in a league game to potential win a 5th round cup tie? Why is everyone talking like we were in the final??

Why not rest players in that league game - was a completely meaningless game in our season.

Although we should have tried to win both, with decent teams and approach both times. Easy, huh?

A meanigless game!! Why u talking like we are suddenly like the league dont matter? The league is the most important competiton at the start of every season and regardless of the stage of the season and no matter how many points we have it shold stay that way.

Are you 13?

Perhaps it would be interesting to see how our team compares to every other cup team this weekend?

defence

first choice RB

first choice LB

after seeing pics of Fonte's cuts possibly first choice available CB pairing (and as so keen on cup had him on bench ;) )

midfield 5

3 first choice

2 changes

Guly for JayRod (although people moan about JayRod I would have wanted him to start)

JWP for Morgan (although loads moaning he has looked tired and limped off I would have wanted him to start) His replacement has played 24 times this season, 12 starting)

Cf

first choice

So could easily be that that was 2 players off our strongest available outfield team.

I wonder if any other team will play as strong a side this weekend?

Disappointing game but probably as much to do with just one of those days it doesn't click, long away trip, midweek game when they rested, them scoring a good goal, Lallana, Lambert and JWP all missing easier chances than their goal, heavy rain /wind etc.

But this won't stop the half wit rants about foreign manager insulting fans, throwing game as he doesn't want europe. If you travelled and don't feel the players gave enough I feel for you, but if you feel insulted by Guly playing...well surprised you managed to get there!

Well done with a really good balanced post. So, the fact is we played an almost full strength team that lost by one goal and put in a very poor shift. And yet some on here are "fuming" and its all the Managers fault?!

Watched the game, disappointed and frustrated like everyone.

got to laugh at the ill-informed over-reaction on here! (not knocking anyone for being in grump after a defeat we all get stroppy!)

insult to fans, clueless, hate pochitinno etc lol - idiots.

We lost away to Sunderland ffs, a bad performance when we wanted a good one- christ we haven't had many.

Long away trip, after long away trip midweek, in crap weather - and lost to a team who rested this week.

Would team selection have changed their goal or Lambert's miss?

Those moaning about team selection include those slating JayRod the last few games.

I didn't see midweek game but reported Morgan limped off? Fonte has four cuts across his leg.

Only particularly questionable one is Guly / JayRod.

Guess glory hunters can give up on ordinary season now

well said Nick G.

although our players have a high level of fitness, 3 games in a week (all of which were played in less than perfect weather) was bound to take its tally on even the best.

We may lament Lambert miss, although I'm sure he does more....and don't blame Guly who did a lot running, but scarcely got a pass or a shot of his own.

Their goal ...(I've watched the re-run a few times)....appears to be a shot going over the bar, but at the last second it dips and hits the underside of the bar and behind KD. More luck than judgement IMHO.

Sunderland didn't have a mid-week. We didn't...and it showed a bit. I don't think S'land played so much better than we did, but we lacked our normal pace we've seen in many earlier games.

We shouldn't expect to see players roaring around (like the Six Million Dollar Man)..as we did early season.

In almost every game we've had the lions' share of possession and in some cases overwhelmingly so.......with 26 games behind us...what should we expect of them?.

As has been noted Fonte had a horror of an injury to his leg after the Hull game...(where was the yellow card for that one, Ref?).....and Morgan looked to be carrying an injury for a couple of games.

Victor looked a bit stronger than before, and Lallana (who covers more territory than most) does seem to be wilting a bit, and no wonder.

I feel sorry for the players, but more for those fans who appear to be playing Russian Roulette whilst drowning their sorrow in tears at their local.

What will they be saying after our away games at tottenham and Man City, I wonder?

....it was a poor game but at least we aren't facing the relegation battle that Sunderland are. 55 years years a fan, I'm a bit more philosophical than most, so move on guys ..it's Wham next week.

Wanyama needs more time in the reserves. He is ****ing terrible at the moment and it is ridiculous that he is favoured over Cork. Won't be stopping up late in Brisbane to watch the West Ham game. Going to be resting after watching the Winter Olympics midweek.

We don't have any reserves, just the U21s and that's a whole set up apart. I don't know that any first team player apart from Gazzaniga on odd occasions has played for them all season.

Think its roughy 7/800k per place so to finish as high as possible is financially good for the club if we are talking 5 places. However is there prize money for fa cup?

Yes, prize money for winning the four rounds from yesterday to the final is worth £3.24m plus the TV money. Winning the final alone is £1.8m with £900k for the losers.

That's the problem of fielding a team of foreigners who don't understand what the FA cup means.......ohh

I stayed up and watched the game on BT and was expecting us to look complete rubbish. Yes the Pompey supporting commentator was doing his job of winding the viewing Saints fans up by keep mentioning the weakened side and Sunderlands changes but if you turn the volume down we were not that much different than usual. AL and RL both had chances they normally would take. Shaws delivery was not as good as normal and we lost to a superb strike.

I can't see how Morgan or Cork would have changed that much and expecting Fonte to play after the injury to his leg is mind boggling. If you haven't seen the injury you should and then realise he would have been mad to play, most of the loves I see playing nowadays would cry off if they had a splinter in their finger

Meaningless, why exactly?

Sorry, I forgot. We can still win the league. Silly me.

£180,000 for winning yesterday

£360,000 for next round

£900,000 for the semi

£1,800,000 for winning it.

Add to that the tv money for the 6th round of £247,000. No tv money for semi and final I don't think. Plus half the gate money for the 6th round. Possibly extra sponsorship money and merchandise revenue, not to mentioned potential increased season ticket revenue for the following season on that back of a feel good factor. Add that up and you get a lot more than the £2.2m difference between 10th and 7th. You have to win it mind you.

Why was he on the bench then and not an extra in greys anatomy?

Because we needed a CB option?

A 80% fit player can be the only alternative and if something happens he might be subbed in, but doesn´t mean you want to do that as a manager unless you´re absolutely forced to.

Youre forgetting one all important balance

Finish top 8 and mopo gets a 500k bonus

Win fa cup and mopo gets zero

why are you peddling the bonus line? You read something on Facebook and think it is truth. The in and outs of a contract will be known by few people. I suspect winning a trophy would give him a bigger financial incentive and make his CV worth much more than a measly 500k.

If true then somebody up top has got their sums wrong.
Whitey, GS is a fifth columnist, he is either a Pompey fan or just wants to unsettle the fans on here. He still has not forgiven the club for getting rid of Adkins, never mind he will get his wish just wait for the summer then losing in the FA cup will be soon forgotten! and picking weakened sides will be the norm as our best players will follow MP

Why does GS just consistently post lies? Just don't get it. Is your life that sad that you need to post lies on an Internet forum to wind people up?
Time for GS to be put in the sin bin. I have never wanted a poster to be banned before but my patience has now come to an end, with his constant attempts to destabilise and posting untruths.

Well, there are proofs that Santa doesn´t exist.....

The proofs of your claims about bonuses in the contract is the same as Santa, very non-existent....

I'm sure they all have bonuses. Win bonuses, final placing bonuses, cup win bonuses. Be stupid to think otherwise. But you saying that Poch gets a massive bonus for getting us eighth is probably bullshiit. You're just speculating. Ok it may be true, but you're just making it up with no reason other than being a cock

The mods won't ban Glasgow Saint because, like me, they know that he is as far removed from the profile of an internet troll as you can get. The mods, like me, abhor the constant persecution of one of this forum's greatest assets. I applaud the mods for ignoring the pleas of the misguided majority.

I dont think there is a difference in bonuses of 500k between finishing 8th or 9th no, which has been your claim.

You dont think, but you dont know! Because you dont know (as its not in the sun or daily mail) im a liar and should be banned from the forum?

Did you get a mate expelled from school when he told you santa wasnt real?

I understand your skepticism i do... But to call for bans when ive simply passed on info provided by a southampton employee? Thats odd

I don't believe ANYTHING. Belief implies doubt. There's simply no reason to believe in anything. Either I know, or I don't know, but I never believe.
