ALWAYS_SFC Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 Perhaps it would be interesting to see how our team compares to every other cup team this weekend? defence first choice RB first choice LB after seeing pics of Fonte's cuts possibly first choice available CB pairing (and as so keen on cup had him on bench ) midfield 5 3 first choice 2 changes Guly for JayRod (although people moan about JayRod I would have wanted him to start) JWP for Morgan (although loads moaning he has looked tired and limped off I would have wanted him to start) His replacement has played 24 times this season, 12 starting) Cf first choice So could easily be that that was 2 players off our strongest available outfield team. I wonder if any other team will play as strong a side this weekend? Disappointing game but probably as much to do with just one of those days it doesn't click, long away trip, midweek game when they rested, them scoring a good goal, Lallana, Lambert and JWP all missing easier chances than their goal, heavy rain /wind etc. But this won't stop the half wit rants about foreign manager insulting fans, throwing game as he doesn't want europe. If you travelled and don't feel the players gave enough I feel for you, but if you feel insulted by Guly playing...well surprised you managed to get there! Olallana Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 No, it's not three games a week. A week is seven days. Ok, 3 games in 8 days. It´s such a big difference....or should we say 7 days and 20 hrs because the game last saturday finished 5 pm and today was a 12.45 kickoff? Glasgow_Saint Posted 15 February, 2014 Author Share Posted 15 February, 2014 Perhaps it would be interesting to see how our team compares to every other cup team this weekend? You cant compare - we have next to nothing to play for in the league...... The FA cup was the only thing left to really play for Sunderland in a relegation fight and League cup final = entitled to rest players Man C - league title + league cup + champions league = entitled to rest a few Chelsea - see Man C Cardiff - relegation battle, but still playing 1st team Wigan - chasing playoffs, but still playing 1st team

If you play every midweek and Saturday for 8 weeks then you will have played 16 games. That's two games a week. All the top clubs do it and so do those in the lower leagues. scorchio21 Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 K Davis, Hooiveld and Guly are all unacceptable picks straight away, we've seen time and time again that they're not up to it at this level, let alone ready to be brought in for the most important match we've had for weeks. In addition to that, we have Ward-Prowse and Wanyama in midfield. Now I can see the argument for Wanyama being a first-team pick, even though IMO he's sub-standard in comparison to the other players we have in position. Ward-Prowse is ok as back-up but not a first team selection by any means. The biggest miss of course was Schneiderlin AND Cork from the midfield. We'll always have way more of the ball with them and therefore create more chances. At Sunderland a month ago, we managed 63% possession, today we managed 52% against a mostly reserve team. That's an enormously weakened team. And none of this is being said with hindsight, we were all already saying this before the match even started. The argument that there are too many games doesn't hold water, especially for the goalkeeper. Even if players need a rest after playing on Tuesday or in preparation for Saturday, which I find hard to believe, this is the match that should have been in the calendar as the one to prioritise ever since the win against Yeovil. Very disappointing. At least there's an outside chance of the holy grail of 7th place still to play for.
The Kraken Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 So why are you seemingly so upset about mine then?... rshephard3 Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 To repeat what I said in the build up thread, today is an absolute insult to all our fans who made the trip up north, especially those doing it for the 3rd time this year. This is the biggest thing for me. An article on the OS explaining that we're going to weaken at Sunderland, probably get dumped out and concentrate on the league and I would be disappointed but understand. Today is just sticking one up those poor sods who made the journey after a night of storms in tough road/rail conditions. If we're going to devalue any competition we enter, the fans need to know before tickets go on sale IMO.
Saint_Tony Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 I think for the first time this season, the usual angry reaction threads are fully justified. I'm absolutely furious with MP's attitide towards the game, and the performance in general. There can be no excuses, today was massive for us as fans, but others decided otherwise
shurlock Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 Mongs in overreaction shocker. We played a pretty strong side - apart from Jrod and Morgan, that was basically the first XI after injuries are taken into account. Is it really a surprise we freshened things in midfield given the toils of the past week and the work it is expected to do in our system? And it's not as if the players who came in are somehow vastly inferior -or at least according to the same self-righteous mongs who are now in meltdown on here. Some have been even claiming JWP, the next big thing, should be off to Brazil Guly was the only one big surprise; but that's vastly different from stating we put out a disgusting, disgraceful, disrespectful team or whatever is mongboard mot du jour. Many of our first teamers looked f**ked and off the boil - lesson is we have a thin squad and can't maintain the tempo expected when the calendar gets congested. Badger Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 I heard a radio summariser after about 10 minutes of the match - Scots bloke on 5live - saying that Hoiveld seemed all at sea, and that he did not seem to have an understanding with his CB partner, Yoshida. That was after 10 minutes. All of which was obvious to everyone bar MP it seems.

eelpie Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 Sunderland had a week off, Saints had a heavy midweek match against Hull, so it made sense for Saints to rest some players, however the rhythm and coordination was lost.We had no choice but to play Hooiveld and Maya (who had a great game against Hull) and it was a risk to play out of form Vic. imo Wanyama should have been subbed by Cork in the second half. Chez Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 Was Boruc injured? If not then we didn't put our strongest side out. B Rabbit Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 Haven't been this f*cked off with saints in a long long time. A golden opportunity completely wasted. The fact that Sunderland made loads of changes makes it even worse as it's even more winnable! No midweek game to come... Team selection was an utter joke...and those that stepped in didn't step up and it was just f*cking painful watching, utter horse sh*t. beatlesaint Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 For the first time today I feel Pochettino totally mis-read the situation. What a glorious chance to get to Wembley, even if only for the semi finals of the Cup. Absolutely ridiculous to make so many changes when we have so little to play for in the league. Such a waste of one hell of a chance to do something good in the comp. I bloody well hope Sunderland are drawn away to the winners of Man City/Chelsea or Arsenal/Liverpool then I shall at least feel a bit better about it ! Playing a weaker side suggests we weren't bothered and most saints fans want the club to be bothered in the cups. Do we think the club should make their plans and decisions out of what the fans wishes.....like down the road? I dont buy all this "we didn´t play our strongest team". We know very little of the physical status of the players and I certainly will never understand this "if you´re on the bench you should be fit to start". A player that is 80-90% fit might be a better option than a player that isn´t as good but you dont want to risk that player unless you absolutely have to and that MIGHT be the case of Fonte, neither of us really know. The only selection today that I might not understand is why JRod didn´t play, but on the other hand he is probably the player that runs the most in games and have played virtually 90 mins for most games this season so he might be in a position to get a bit of resting because of that. Exactly. Given the circumstances we have found ourselves in before this game, only a mad fan would understand weakening for this cup game.
