suewhistle Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 That's sad news. RIP. Indeed: a getleman and the sort of player you'll only see once in a Preston Guild.
Badger Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 Never saw him play, well before even my time, but I recall how older relatives spoke of him and the respect and admiration they held for him. Have seen him interviewed a few times, always seemed one of the true Gentlemen of the game (from a bygone age). RIP.

spyinthesky Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 As I recollect the Tom Finney statue was taken from a photo during Preston's game at Stamford Bridge back in the 1950's. Bill Shankly reckoned that Tom Finney was the best player he had ever seen. He could play across every forward position. Very loyal man and actually had his own plumbing business which helped keep him going in the summer months when players (even great ones) were on very reduced wages. So much different to nowadays. Thoughts are with Tom's family and those Preston fans who continue to hold Tom as an icon of their club
