Saints Away Support

They're just about to talk FA Cup on Talksh*te and mentioned the trek facing Saints fans tomorrow.

After Saturday, in the few weeks since the start of December Southampton fans will have travelled around 4,000 miles. This will have included 5 trips to the North East - Newcastle, Hull and 3 trips to Sunderland.

They’ve had to suffer early winter morning starts for ridiculous lunchtime kick-offs at Everton and Sunderland twice.

There were over a thousand Saints fans at Hull on Tuesday night just days before facing another 650 mile round-trip back up to the North East, most with a 4am start.

Then there was the farcical situation of Sunderland away in the League Cup, two weeks after the draw the date was set for the match. Fans had booked trains, hotels, etc. there were tales of dads promising the nipper a trip as it was half term and last minute they announce the date has been changed.

They’re taking the p*ss*.

Rant over.

*I wonder how much influence the ex-skate has at BT Sport?

I've sort of traveled up from the South Coast.

Working in Doncaster I went to Hull on Tuesday with a mate (who though he's a Northerner has followed Saints since he did time at RNAS Yoevilton)

I've negotiated a weekend pass and I'll be at the Stadium of light tomorrow before going back down South next Friday.

I've actually managed as many away games as home games this year.

How many of the 1000 at ull travelled up from the South coast? We always seem to get around 1000 for the northern non glittering games
OVer a thousand for a midweek game in that part of the world is excellent, not like it was a new ground or a vital game or anything like that. Don't thik we'll have too many travelling tomorrow.

i remember the days when we'd get half that for satuday games and only take just over 1,000 to some London fixtures.

When?

mid ninties. Even later than that, remember being in the away end at Spurs for a sunday game after Hoddle went and it it being half empty, the club took 3,000 tickets and didn't sell at least half of them. Also we only used to take about 1,000 to places like Charlton in the premier league. SAw us win 1-0 at Elland road in a saturday 3pm game in about 97 and there were about 500 away fans there. You cant have been a fan for very long if you dont remember those times.

I used to go all the time then and maybe on the odd occasion but we took as many as we do now, the difference is there are far more Tarquin student types and mothers who are bored going.

Makes a big difference when we have a really good chance of getting a result away as well. We've got some great results away in the last 5 years. People get back into it, and a lot of the away games aren't that difficult to get to really, and are in decent cities. Add the fact that a lot of our younger support...(I include myself in that at 25) won't have done many of the prem grounds before last season. Tomorrow will be my last of the 20 prem. It's been good this season though, and those stats are ridiculous!!!

If that's the game i'm thinking of i was at that one, stuck in the corner with hardly anyone there. Think it was Carlton Palmers first game back at elland road too and he got a stupid amount of racist abuse from the leeds fans.

In all honest i've done loads of northern games (and a few that weren't too) where we struggled to get many more than 500, so it's definitely not just you remembering that.

I didn't miss many away games 92-95 and I am telling you thats ****, sorry absolute ****. On occasion yes but not always, for London games? Where you there at Arsenal away when Wright got his hattrick? Palace away? Villa? Liverpool? cod****.

4 games in a 10 year period where we might have taken more than that. good work Baz, keep going.

I remember games away at Sunderland/Everton etc when we were last in the Prem and having less than 500 there. For a similar sort of game as tomorrow, we'd have had less than 300 there before. I think going down to League One has improved our support with cheaper tickets, because before then we were sh*t away from home. It seems to have carried on into the Prem again. Although vocally I still think we're crap most of the time.

Palace, Wimbledon, Arsenal, Villa yes indeed, did you actually go in the 90's? The people commenting on here are kids by comparison.

Yep, went to many games in the 90's and many games in the 00's and many games in the 10's. That's how i know that our support is better now, in terms of numbers at least. I presume you only went to 4 away games in that time as they are the ones you keep on mentioning.

Not been called a kid in a while, but i must be a fu.cking old one given my first game was '84!

I'm not saying there weren't good away days - dellhurst definitely was one - but on the whole the ones you mention were always well supported. It was the northern games that were less so, sheffield united, wednesday, bradford, leeds, middlesborough, sunderland and weirdly everton always seemed to be our lowest away attendance almost every season.

The London games plus Villa, United (though i do remember the Timmy Flowers cup game that we didn't sell out there) and Liverpool were normally decent turnouts, and maybe that's the reason you think the support was good. You only went to the games where the support was decent rather than the rest of them (where it was pretty fu.cking woeful at times) so your vision of the truth is blurred.

No as I said Turkish I only missed a few in a 3 year period, its very simple to understand, more go now and where did I disagree with your statement? I also said its due to Tarquins and mothers, you made a bul**** statement of we only took 500 odd away in the 90's, a crock of ****e I may add.

Nah mate, you're chatting brown. I went a lot during that period (89-2005) Rarely had more than 500-700 for away games up North and often less. I remember the occasional good turnout at Coventry/Villa but anything further north than that - no chance. Btw, the reference to the Flowers Cup game at OT - that was midweek in our defence and we should have been murdered - in my top 3 away games that one.

Very rarely took more than 1500-2000 to London games either.

We did to a lot of Northern games, i know as i was there, as was EricB is seems. Wirral Saint and Sour Mash also agree, you're the only one who seems to be disputing it and using Arsenal and Palace attendances as some bizarre evidence to "prove" we took more to games up north. Maybe a geography lesson is in order as well as maths?

I went to Sunderland mid week around 2003 (?) when we won 1-0. We had under 300 there for that match. Wasn't much more difficult to get to than this weeks trip to Hull.

That was a wretched trip ... got the 2am train from Newcastle > Leeds. Sat around in a deserted Leeds station for an hour & then got back into London at 7.30am. Was in work (in London) at 9am.

Knackered is an under statement.

Whilst we are taking more away these days, I'd argue the quality of support was better back then.

Remember about 500 at Everton under Branfoot when we were singing "Dowie, Dowie where's the goal" after he had failed to score for 17 games.

Similar number at Highbury when Branfoot started with Dowie & Moody on the bench.

About 200 at Shrewsbury for a League Cup game we lost 2-1.....,

Probably think of more if I tried.

Turkish are you on crack? I missed an handful of games between 92-95 away from home, you were saying we only took a 1000 to a few games, you are very wrong, we did it quite alot, you are talking ****e.

Just leaving now reckon a good 7 hours before we arrive at the Premier Inn

I've mentioned this before, but mate of mine works at Premier Inn and i know for a fact that when they build new hotel Lenny Henry personally cracks one off in every bed. I always prefer to stay Holiday Inn because of this.

Maybe you were drunk and had double vision? Funny that you're the only one that remembers this. Seems like you're the one talking s**te

You're also complete twisting the argument too, it's gone from your fab 4 games where we took loads to now me saying we only took a 1000 a few times.

As i said originally, in the main away attendances up north were c500 with often 1000 or so to London and midlands games. Of course there were times when we took more but in the main that was about it during the 90s as others have confirmed.

One of the nicest fellows I have met, used to bring his kids along with him on his coach trips, used to allow the bevy to flow on there as well.

As a young lad I did loads of away games on his coaches, including one of the most entertaining games I've done, West Ham away, Le God free kick, 3-3, pitch invasions and general madness before, during and after the game. Brilliant!

Top bloke Dennis, staunch Saints fan and never wore anything other than a suit and tie!

F**K me nipper 84 you missed the 60's 70's and nearly half the 80's, I remember Sunderland on a pre season friendly at Roker Park when there was lucky to be 50 fans there but we did get Ivan Golac's first game, and Leeds on boxing day when there was probably less than 100 fans there. :)

Barry, you have been caught. Turks is right. Also, the problem was even worse in the eighties. Mid week to Sunderland, two coaches, neither full, and about 30 who went by car.

Saw him outside the Kingsland before the Stoke game, first time I've seen him in years. Maybe wrong but didn't look in the best of health.

I've been going away since the mid 70s and I can confirm our away support has been both fantastic and poor. In the 70s we could take loads away one week then a poor turnout the next. In that decade I can remember taking around 10k (more on a couple of occasions) to Nottm Forest, West Brom, Luton, Fulham and Orient. But it was more likely in the hundreds rather than thousands north of Brum other than big/cup games. Having said that we only saw decent away support at the Dell with the big London and NW clubs back in those days.

Could be right i did two in quick succession at leeds around the mid 90s as i was seeing a girl from Leeds at the time so was up there anyway. Remember it being fu.cking freezing and being in that corner so it might be that game.
