Gemmel Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 Got to be good news for us Henry Winter @henrywinter · 1m Premier League planning B team division (outside pyramid; U-23 + four over-age) involving clubs with Category 1 Academies: 16 PL and 6 FL
DuncanRG Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 Interesting idea, but I don't know enough about youth development and league structure to pass judgement myself.
eelpie Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 We've a long list of players who need games including talented youngsters who are on the fringe of the first team. So long as it doesn't force Saints to have to play those who need to be rested, it will be a positive.
Wade Garrett Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 More or less the old Combination League.
The Saint Posted 14 February, 2014 Author Share Posted 14 February, 2014 My initial thoughts are that it would provide our youngsters (of whom we have plenty) with a real competitive league, playing against other PL sides. At the moment we seem to have a rather ad-hoc system nationally and the new B League would raise the status of players who are not quite ready for regular first team action. I remember the old 'Combination League' of reserve players, which gave game time to players who didn't fill the one substitute place on the bench. Times change and hopefully this new league will be an important part of the pyramid form non-league to the England national squad.
The Saint Posted 14 February, 2014 Author Share Posted 14 February, 2014 More or less the old Combination League. You beat me to it.... The emphasis will be on younger players though, so we won't see the old guys coming to an end of their players days huffing and puffing their way around... Tokyo-Saint Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 Can we sell Forte and with the proceeds buy Pompey and use them as the 'B' or feeder team? With all the money that's left over from that, we could go for a fry up in the tesco express.
Badger Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 More or less the old Combination League. But the Combination was regional, and would include say, Oxford, Northampton and anyone in the south who wanted to field a second team.
Baird of the land Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 To me i'm leaning on the side of bad news. The whole notion of televising the games and staging them at main grounds seems designed to allow top 4/5 to create what in reality will be B teams like Spanish teams do and insert them above the championship level in a league of their own. Does nothing to provide 1st team opportunities but may act as attractive trap to lure in players.
fish fingers Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 To really help develop young English talent it should have a set quote of English/British players per match day team. It's being set up by the PL and Scudamore, so it won't.

Matthew Le God Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 the league the reserves play in changes it's name. Massive, massive news. Its more significant than a mere name change, the proposal is also to change the player eligibility rules raising it to under 23's, plus attempts to try and commercialise it more and have more games at the main stadium. Barry Sanchez Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 Very good idea in principle,it will help the clubs and our National talent for the future, it will also again in theory help smaller clubs in the scheme keep their talent as they are being showcased every week on sky. melmacian_saint Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 Would EU employment law allow the PL to create such a rule? Several countries have that rule, although it usually concerns locally formed players (i.e. have played at age level in the said country for at least 2/3 years). Meaning there is no actual issue with discrimination et al. but it makes clubs favour "local" produce.

Fan The Flames Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 What about Cricket that has a limit? Cricket can not limited EU, it just happens that not mant EU players are good enough (apart from the odd Irishman) to play County Cricket. It can limit other players as they do not have an automatic right to work here. I think the B League will be a great idea, competitive football of a higher standard for the the youngsters to improve their game and a good way of easing back older injured players. Saint Fan CaM Posted 14 February, 2014 Share Posted 14 February, 2014 Sounds like a great money making idea....£20 for team B games anyone? Now, IF they price the games right...say no more than £10 it could become very popular indeed - bit like College Football in the USA.

Wurzel Posted 15 February, 2014 Share Posted 15 February, 2014 Its a rule for a competition. Bit like saying no mobiles in pub quizzes. If you don't like the rule don't enter it. This has always been my argument. EU laws cover employment so no restriction can be put on the number of EU citizens employed. But a competition can state than x number of players on the field at any one time must be home grown/of a certain age/whatever rules it likes. This, by it's nature, would result in clubs employing more home grown players whilst not restricting the number of or discriminating against players from other EU countries. They'd be free to employ as many as they like but as most would be unavailable to take part on match days then they wouldn't bother.
