why league season isn't ordinary - Man U's rivals?

In response to the thread stating defeat next season would leave us with an ordinary season..

I thought some may enjoy reading this Man U thread, the race for 7th...

Includes comments such as

"Southampton are our biggest rivals right now"

"Its Southampton we need to worry about"

"Southampton will be the threat"

"All for us to do" (referring to last game of season)

"Us and southampton..to the wire.. Exciting"

Its a big ask hoping for 7th, I think Man U as well as their squad also have easier run-in in their favour, but we are only 3 points of them and 6 off Everton.

Just months after Turkish saying we are light years away from top 8 sides we are competing.

A top 8 finish would be amazing.

In last four years the only gatecrashers to the top 8 were WBA scraping in at 8th last year, three years ago Fulham the same, and four years ago Villa.

Hope cup run goes well but enjoy league success as well - its not an ordinary season!

I think its quite unlikely we'll catch United as I think once the pressure begins to fade after its just generally accepted that they won't be reaching the top 4, I think they'll string a few results together and beat teams with a bit more regularity than we will. You might notice that in Novemeber/December they hit a bit of form after the shock of United being out of the title race began to subside and people generally just accepted that for this season at least, they're part of the chasing pack for fourth.

The pressure has since increased hugely now that people have realised its even worse than that, and its actually very unlikely they'll make the top four. Once people are kind of 'over' that. I think they'll probably kick on and finish in 6th above Everton. City/Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool/Spurs/United/Everton/Us/Newcastle/West Ham is my prediction for the top 10.

Having said that, it'd be great to push them right to the wire and even better to pip them on the final day of the season.

All that shows is what a terrible season they are having.

Would love to finish above them but lets face it Man U is having a bad season they will no doubt spend big in the summer and leave us miles behind again (perhaps, I hate to say it, even buying some of our star players). To use Man Us 1st season under Moyes as evidence we are somehow a regular top 8 side is a bit premature me thinks.

Name checked again, love it!

I think you'll find Nick G I said on numerous occasions in the summer if we added 3 quality players to the squad we would finish top 10. It was you that was claiming last seasons squad would finish 6th, or above 13th or something. more made up BS again and another name check, good work.

Buying big doesn't necessarily work. The players have to gel. Think Osvaldo, and to a lesser extent Ramirez.

Look at our recent results with 4 most expensive players out. Being a team who work together and understand each other is more important.

We're not really competing with Man United, let's be honest. Come the end of the season they will have 10-15 points more than us. And I don't think Turkish said that either, he's just a realist like myself who can see how far we are off getting into the top 6 with our squad. I was of the belief that 7th was the highest we could possibly get, but more likely 8th-10th as did most people, and that looks to be the case. It's been a great season so far, and could get better, but we are still 4/5 quality signings minimum, from breaking the top 6 and possibly being considered as Man Utd's 'rivals'

True but as a general rule the most expensive teams are at the top of the table and Man U aren't short of a penny. I expect a major overhaul in the summer at Man U and given enough time Moyes will have them back in the top four no doubt, saints I'm pretty sure won't be. If we can keep this team together and add some extra quality we could potentially push to be a regular top 8 side but we will need to spend quite big just to maintain that. The ops idea that we are somehow we are rivals to Man U based on them having a dodgy first season under a new manager and us having an amazing (by our standards) season is erroneous IMO.

MbaleSaint

there wasn't many of us there that day was there?

In 1984 I was at Notts County last game of the season when we won to finish second behind Liverpool and Moan Utd finished 4th.

Remember it well. Drove up with three mates, couldn't really believe it was all happening. One of the few times I've gone onto the pitch at an away game.

Shook Lawrie's hand and promised to have his babies...

I thought it was unlikely we would make up the 5 points gap on Newcastle but there we are now 2 points ahead of them, so catching Man U depends on if they keep on slipping up, which seems entirely likely. If we haven't caught them before the last Sunday, I'd be quite happy with a win that day to take us above them. "Happy"? I'd be delirious.

I agree with NickG that this season is far from ordinary and with so many young players and so much promise in the squad, there's every reason to think things can only get better.

We are certainly living in an interesting time.

Fun though.

And would be nice to look down on the Mancs and say 'We are richer than yow, better than yow, have a better acadamy than yow, and a better manager then yow.'Just for once.

A couple of thousand there maybe? Bunked off college and drove like mad and still missed the first two goals (1-1) - great night.

Liverpool thread on young England players.

(Away on course too much time on my hands!)

Again shows how whatever happens Saturday this season has been far from ordinary - every realist can see that ;)

If you can't enjoy this maybe time to get another hobby?

Thanks for the link, always good to read some decent football chat, though with all the names flying about on there you do wonder why the u21's aren't current world champions!

This is an interesting article about Rodgers, fair play to the guy.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/feb/11/brendan-rodgers-liverpool-england-roy-hodgson

Not sure Liverpool can really be put up as some sort of champion of youth products, certainly not recently. Gerrard is 34, Flanagan is only playing because Glen Johnson is injured. Henderson cost nearly £20 million and has only recently started justifying that price tag.

I don't for example see them starting 4 academy products or 3 18 year olds in a prem game.

So basically, 7th spot should get into Europe? Assuming City smash Sunderland....

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/fans/faqs/who-qualifies-to-play-in-europe/

I think 7th will get a Europa spot only if the FA Cup winner AND runners up AND league cup winners are already qualified for Europe.

Finishing 7th, potentially with a Europa spot, potentially above Man Utd would be a great season. When you add in the youngsters we have brought through, the football we have played and we could potentially have several players going to the World Cup with England it would be difficult to call it anything but a superb season for the club.

You're right Troy, I didn't say anything like that at all. What I said was we were a fair way behind the top 4-6 and said in thee summer if we brought in 3 quality players we'd finish top 10. It's very odd behaviour from Nick G to not only name check me in his OP but to do whilst totally inventing a opinion I'm meant to have and posts I'm meant to have made.

No, you don't understand. 6th was just the aim, we weren't actually capable of finishing there, it was just a realistic target, where we were capable of finishing was above 13th but 6th was what we should be aiming for, even though we couldn't finish there it was a realistic target though, or something.

I can equate that to days gone by, pal. It was like in my 20s when I deviated from a decent night out in the Rhino and headed down to McCluskey's or New York New York. I would always target scoring with a bird who was a 9 out of 10; but come the end of the evening, I would always settle for a 5 or 6 out of 10. In times of desperation the relegation zone bird would come into play. Either that or a kebab and a cab home. Gotcha. Moving targets.

Got the same thing at work pal. I've got a realistic target of bring a director, drive a Ferrari and earning £250k a year, but a likely job of less than £30k a year and drive a third hand vectra. Anywhere in between would be a fantastic achievement. Viola, tied up in knots.

Viola indeed, pal. Wise words and, to be blunt, your right.

For what it is worth, I don't believe United will be caught by us but I don't see why we cannot target finishing above Everton. It was said at the beginning of the season that our midfield was at least as good as United's and I reckon that is true. They do more than match us in the offensive third and probably in defense given their squad depth superiority in that third. Everton however, are not as good as us, offensively or in midfield but are more competitive in defense. If we can get our first 11 all fit (just Lovren to come) then we could overhaul the current 6 point (possibly 9 with their game in hand) gap. I do believe we are better than Everton although we may just run out of games in which to catch them. If they had had the run of injuries to their squad that we suffered, we would be out of sight from them.We have yet to play Everton at home, so who knows. Ultimately, I think United will finish in 6th, above Everton with us hopefully pipping Everton to 7th. I would love it, love it if we finished above Everton. Hate them with a passion. Any team, or individual for that matter who self appoint themselves a name i.e, 'The people's club', are self important nobbers. COYS!

We can target it, but if they win their game in hand (against Palace at home) they'll be 9 points ahead of us with 12 games to play. Expecting to overhaul that would be a bit unrealistic.
