Luke Shaw to make England debut against Denmark

Wow, the progress he's made and has continued to make is outstanding. Just over a year ago we were crapping ourselves that Fox was our first choice left back and an untried Shaw (who I seem to remember a few saying wasn't ready yet after an appearance in a cup game) was our only back up.

Big congratulations to him if this is true, the first England debut of many more I'm sure.

Article in OS quotes Woy as saying many saints players are Jon contention.

JRod, SRL, Lallana, Cork, JWP, Shaw, Clyne, Chambers all mentioned

Jon Forte is in contention? Good for him. Hasn't played a game in years and he's Bajan. I reckon Adkins had some influence here...

I am pretty sure he will only make one England debut.

Fantastic news if this is true. I only hope that if he has a decent game, Roy is brave enough to leave Cole at home on Chelsea's bench, where he has spent most of the season.

I didn't word that very well at all! "The first England debut of many more Saints players, I'm sure!" is what I meant (and even that I've worded badly. #tired #hashtagswillnotworkonSaintsWeb )

The detail. It doesn't ACTUALLY say he will play in The Fail but you can see why it has been inferred he will

Hodgson said: ‘Shaw is the obvious one (to bring in) because he has been playing last season and has been in the team non-stop since the start of this season.

Nathaniel Clyne hasn’t played all the game and Calum Chambers is an Under 18 international. ‘Before we start really delving in the U18 international team players will have to be really really special if after two games for England Under-18s and suddenly they are in a World Cup squad ahead of the likes of Glen Johnson and Kyle Walker.

‘I think that is asking a bit too much. It is may when we make decision.’

JWP and Chambers have no chance. The others I would think would all have a chance. Personally I think Cork would be great.

Had Cork been playing since August, in the form he is currently displaying, I think he'd have been a contender but unlikely to shift the Gerrard/Lampards etc to make the final squad.

i think the squads are announced after the West Ham away game so still a couple of games to make an impression - surely Lambert will keep his place in the squad with Carrol hardly playing many games this season, would be great to have Lambert, Rodriguez, Lallana and Shaw all in there as a confidence boost.

Gives them a great incentive to play well for the rest of the season as well.

Great stuff, absolutely no point in taking Ashley Cole to the World cup just to sit on the bench.

You're forgetting that he'll be the 'experienced player in the changing room'. Always vital for a World Cup;) Would love to see Shaw and Clyne go, but for me they're both 25/1 outsiders

Might go now.

It doesn't follow at all, Leighton Baines stayed at Everton. If Luke is capped and being recognised, playing PL football every week and is part of a tight knit successful side in the top eight why would he want to move on. Not everyone is motivated by greed and easy money like Chamberlain, although we can thank his domineering and self seeking Dad for that. In any case, Saints will likely match most offers on salary in the new climate of cost controls on clubs.

Of course if somebody like Real Madrid came in with an £80m offer as they did for our former Academy left back.... but it seems unlikely at least until the lad would be about 23/24 and fully mature as a player.

I think Blakey was referring to whether he will buy a ticket for the Denmark game! ;)

He meant he might go to the friendly to watch it...

Luke Shaw is brilliant, but does no-one else think it's a bit odd he has more chance of getting in at LB, where England have 2 top class experienced players, whereas Clyne and Chambers won't get in at RB, where England are poor.

Walker is alright, but not brilliant. Johnson is terrible and injured anyway, Smalling and Jones are terrible there, but neither claim to be RBs, and Richards seems to have disappeared. I'd definitely take one of Clyne or Chambers. Offers great natural width and pace getting forward. If Walker gets injured they're screwed otherwise.

Go all the way and start Chambers, Shaw, Cork, Lallana, JRod and Lambert v Denmark!

Not really. Playing week in, week out for their clubs is quite rightly an important thing for Hodgson, as is versatility across the back 4, he seems to be taking both factors into consideration.

Seems a bit inconsistent though if Smalling and Jones are the back up RBs, when neither play there for their club, and neither have ever played well there.

On this basis Cleverley and Welbeck would stand no chance of selection other, or Townsend and probably not Chamberlain or Lampard.

Smalling plays at RB for Utd pretty often, played there after half time last night when Fabio went off and Ferdinand came on, he's not at all bad at it and it gives and extra place elsewhere in the squad.

He was really not very good in that cup game at Stevenage. I'm pretty sure that nobody there would have believed he had a chance of making the World Cup squad this year. It's quite amazing, really.

Smalling played the 2nd half at right back last night didn't he? As I say, it's a combination of playing regularly or being versatile. For what it's worth, the selection of Cleverley is ridiculous.

I agree, he offers nothing. I'd rather have Kevin 'I should have 50 caps' Nolan in the squad than Cleverley. Cork or Osman would also be a better choice, at least they keep the ball well.

Anyone worried these friendlies are just before the FA Cup 6th round? Wouldn't want this upsetting our cup run with players tired or injured after International duty.

Doubt if Maya will be available, they play NZ in Tokyo Wednesday 5th March so that's a hell of a hike for him between the Liverpool game on 1/3 and an eventual Cup game on the 8th or 9th. Still if we have José and Dejan that might not be so bad

but at the end of the day it will be the same 17 players assuming the responsibility so any injuries wouldn't do us any good.

Hmmm. Have we had a bye in the 5th round then? Otherwise, really not worth thinking about til the end of the game on Sat...

Most seem to be convinced that Saturday is only a formality because err we're better than them and the fact that we've had

a tough game (sorry no it was a stroll in the park apparently) on Tuesday and they had no game at all doesn't even enter into the equation.Still think we're in for a toughy myself and that we may or may not win.

If England win the World Cup, we'll be like the new West Ham.

Unfortunately we won't win the World Cup and our lads will probably come back tired and demoralised to face an angry press.

or want a Champions League team to "fulfil their potential ..."etc
