JackFrost Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 Think he deserves a thread of his own. Another very solid performance tonight and has shown himself to be a more than capable backup for Lovren in the last few games. Since he's come in we've conceded 4 goals in 5 games in all competitions, which isn't bad considering many on here were putting him in the same category as Hooiveld. In the last 2-3 games it's arguable that he's been our best CB. How Jos was continously being preferred to him earlier in the season god only knows. S-Clarke Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 Maya was nursing injuries throughout the first part of the season, didn't help that he missed a good chunk of pre-season due to the confed cup. Good squad player though, and seems to have improved under MP's guidance. Good to see.

Smirking_Saint Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 I quite like Maya, he isnt physically dominant but reads the game very well and is generally good on the ball. He is a pretty solid replacement for me. I liked him last year, he showed ability. Unfortunately he partnered Jos and next to fox a lot who were terrible. Constantly out of position which meant the others in the defence, maya included get dragged around.
Ewell Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 No No No he is **** and we need another centre half as that is what the MAJORITY have been telling us all season. Well done Maya, great cover, great attitude http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/11000502.Maya_never_thought_to_quit/ and we are lucky to have him. Suhari Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 I like him. Always have. Very good in recovery/last ditch tackles. Timing is generally good. Lacks a little physical presence, but a solid prem-quality CB. Could we do better as a back up?
Saint_clark Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 we do need another. but it wasn't essential right now. 3 good CBs, 1 poor. much better than last year. here's hoping next season it's 4 good CBs. although not sure yoshida will want to stay as back up. Read the article he linked, he definitely wants to be here. Would be a good signing for a promoted side though.

BlakeySFC Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 Said last year that he's a quality CB when he gets a few games under his belt. Not as good as Lovren but a decent PL CB nevertheless, far FAR better than Jos 'Donkey' Hooiveld.

austsaint Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 So glad to see Yoshida getting his chance and showing what a good player he is - and his disposal and passing tonight were top shelf - I thought he and Curtis Davies were among the best on the pitch tonight. doggface Posted 12 February, 2014 Share Posted 12 February, 2014 My mom tonight, he seems a good lad and always gives 100% he had jelavic and long in his pocket. He looked super calm in possession and won his headers. Always felt that cb is a the toughest position to play, if you make a mistake it's generally a goal at this level. Every player needs games to get a rhythm, especially centre backs. I have doubted him at times, but he is more than adequate back up for lovren. eurosaint Posted 12 February, 2014 Share Posted 12 February, 2014 Like many players he benefits from a run in the side, coming on as a sub or just getting the odd game makes it very difficult, especially in central defence where a partnership is vital and mistakes can be very costly ! He has been a contender for MoM in the last couple of matches and personally I'm made up for him

Mouldy Coat Posted 12 February, 2014 Share Posted 12 February, 2014 (edited) I prefer to judge a player over all games played during a season and so far he has been poor, with the exception of a couple of ok games of late. Even Jos has had a couple of ok games too but over the distance he isn't good enough. I have seen plenty of Yoshida to know that he is nowhere near good enough and we need someone more consistent and better. Yeovil he was awful against sub standard opposition, Arsenal he was poor...remember the ball over the top that he had no idea whether to let it bounce, jump Etc but instead headed it straight to Carzola. His distribution 50% of the time goes to the other team and he is too lightweight, but has been better in the last two games v Stoke and Hull that's all. If you think he has been significantly better than a 6 out of 10 in any other game this season then I want some of what you've been smoking. As soon as Lovren is back he will be 3rd choice again behind Jose and Dejan. Edited 12 February, 2014 by Mouldy Coat

What people are saying is that he has come in and done well, which he very much has. Perfectly good back up and as people have said CBs need a couple of games to get the partnership going. Not sure we will get a better third choice CB? We might sign a new starter to play with Lovren but I can't see Fonte wanting to drop to the bench at this stage of his career and after the form he's showed this season. Mouldy Coat Posted 12 February, 2014 Share Posted 12 February, 2014 Ok, find me a newspaper report saying he was man of the match yesterday and on Saturday. He did ok, not great but ok. I think it´s more of a case that many people on this forum know where the team has had it´s weakness and that it therefor is encouraging to see Yoshidas performances with Lovren out. The performances are not of the kind that would stand out to a neutral looking at the game though but for a CB to be MOTM you either need to score or be in the team that gets dominated but you defend well and it´s rarely these days that we are getting dominated to make it a stand out performance from a CB. Cannot let your post go unchallenged - anyone who saw the game last night does not need a newspaper report to know Yoshida had an outstanding match. As others have said no one is suggesting he should be replacing Lovren, just that with a run of games he is demonstrating his considerable skill as a left sided CB. His distribution and passing v Hull was pinpoint.

I don't need any newspaper report to prove to you that Yoshida had a great game, thanks very much. It was clear to see, and he was also singled out by Fonte after the game. Very pleased he has filled in the gap well in Lovren's absence. Important to have more than capable back up.

I will take the opinion of our Vice captain and his fellow central defensive partner over some shoddy journalist who probably wouldn't even be at the game. I see quite a few of our fans that were there also seem to agree with Fonte as well! Fonte was full of praise for his fellow centre half, Yoshida, who helped keep Hull’s front pairing of Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long quiet. “I thought Maya was excellent,” said Fonte of the Japan international, who has been deputising for the injured Dejan Lovren. “Very, very good, very strong, good in the air – he was faultless, so great credit to him. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/26152142 http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/11003202.Yoshida_produces__faultless__performance/

It will be a hard decision for MP to make. If we're still in the Cup there will be plenty of scope for rotation as there are international friendlies to consider as well. As Maya will no doubt be called up for Japan as usual for their game in Tokyo against New Zealand mid week that will probably rule him out of 1 game, perhaps even 2. It is also false that Hooiveld was first choice at any point last season other than before Yoshida arrived. He only paired Maya after Fonte's long-term injury in the FA Cup tie vs. Chelsea. Quality skapegoating. You're talking about one instance - and yes, it was a lousy pass by Yoshida. I was talking about a trend. After the way he's played this season and much of last, and the impact that his slowness and poor reading and positioning have on others, you're not seriously suggesting that Jos is a scapegoat, are you?
