mcjwills Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 Been thinking of this for a while, as it seems we are in a little mini league with Newcastle and maybe Manure, is it about time that MoPo considers sacrificing a few points by giving game time to all the youth team players that are on the verge of a breakthrough. What better time to blood them in the Premier league than when there is nothing really to play for, admittedly we should keep the stars on the bench to come on as reserves if needed. What better way to show our commitment to our Academy, than give them top notch game time.
niceandfriendly Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 That's what we are already doing. Chambers, Gallagher, JPW, Shaw, Reed... probably more
Wrensup Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 So, not just Shaw, Chambers, Ward-prowse, and Gallagher, but even more starting say Reed, Seager, Targett, Stephens?

Wow, just Chambers, Shaw, Lallana, Ward-Prowse, Gallagher, and Reed who have played in the league this season. You're right, 6 just isn't enough...... Saint Charlie Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 What about Isgrove? First he was good, then rubbish, and now back on the bench. Is he any good? Will be released end of the season IMO and probably end up like Reeves doing ok at L1 level.
Wrensup Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 What about Isgrove? First he was good, then rubbish, and now back on the bench. Is he any good? I'm guessing he only made the bench because of Gallaghers unavailability.

No I meant that it is the ideal time to give the even more game time to those who have not had much game time i.e Reed, Seager, Targett, Stephens and any other exciting prospects coming through. This season is the ideal time to give the youngster game time, we are safe from relegation, we may not win as may games but our youth squad would get valuable experience without as much pressure on them. Window Cleaner Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 So why was he on the bench over over youngsters? i was surprised to see him back. because we had U18 and U21 games against Arsenal this weekend ? When that happens I'd think we barely have enough players to go round. Isgrove was injured for long while and probably isn't anywhere near match fit yet; So he played half a game in the Us and then was on the bench to make up the numbers for the first team. None of the other numbers makeruppers get any game time anyway.

OMG it would be so sweet!!!
david in sweden Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 No I meant that it is the ideal time to give the even more game time to those who have not had much game time i.e Reed, Seager, Targett, Stephens and any other exciting prospects coming through. This season is the ideal time to give the youngster game time, we are safe from relegation, we may not win as may games but our youth squad would get valuable experience without as much pressure on them. Historically.....the most successful young players have been gradually integrated into the first team one or two at a time, to play alongside the regulars. (ala Lawrie McMenemy's style in the early 1980's). Bear in mind, though entertaining to watch ..our strongest team has leaked in some silly goals, and despite having..average 11-17 chances in our recent games, we can seldom score more than 2 goals. Playing too many youngsters at the same time isn't going to help them as the Prem. is a very much higher standard than anything they may have experienced before and may only damage their confidence. Looking at those " weakened sides" we've put out in League Cup games against better class teams in the last year or so ; we still lost to Leeds (last year) and Sunderland this season...not a good omen. I'd like to see some more come in, but you need a stable side, who are playing well before making mass changes - just to try and prove a point. NOTE , the U21s haven't been at their best in recent matches, and so those lads who showed early season promise may have gone off the boil a bit. Silly to put someone in just for the sake of it. Personally, I'm happy to let the coaches play decide when to play who from the new recruits. Targett (not played yet) is rumoured to be Fox's replacement...but if he comes in for a game or two...and " does a Chambers " ...then I'm pretty sure that Shaw would get p****d off pretty quickly and likely to unsettle him. Shaw's debut (and to a lesser extent JWP's were quite exceptional)... others may take a bit longer.
david in sweden Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 So why was he on the bench over over youngsters? i was surprised to see him back. Lloyd Isgrove......I think he's already around 20-21, and for someone who hasn't made a proper League debut yet.... time must be running out for him to make an impression. I don't have stats, but I get the impression (from U21 games) that he's a " slimmish winger ..of sorts " and even if he has pace, we've got three full backs who do a pretty good job in that area at present. The U21's had a long-ish break over Christmas and he didn't feature much - especially as they'd given games to the likes of Lee and Barnard and Sam Gallagher earlier on. My guess is .....that unless MP was to " experiment unnecessarily " ( i.e he's happy with his present first choices).. then Isgrove may go the way of Reeves, Hoskins and others who only got games by dropping a division or two .....and were still lucky to get off the bench in their new clubs. Window Cleaner Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 It's always time for the Young Ones How shamemaking, I actually saw that film at the ABC in Portswood with my Mum. Ah those were the days when you could make films about 4 bus conducteurs going off on a converted bus to Greece. No-one got killed, no-one got sh@gged (mind you it was Cliff Richard) and people actually paid their 2 and ninepence to see it.
simo Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 We are, the onez that are good enough anyway ! No point blooding them unless they are ready for it ?
CWD Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 Why is everyone so desperate for our season to be over!? Trying to win every game and finish as high as possible should surely be the aim? Otherwise we might as well not bother turning up.
SaintSteve Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 I hope MP doesn't think we have nothing to play for..what a strange attitude to have. As for playing youth, I'm sure MP knows who is and who is not ready.. no point in ruining a youngster by playing him when clearly out of his depth. JoeShmoe Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 I'd like to see Targett get a few games, big chance Shaw will be away this summer with the clamour for him, so be good to see him in the EPL and if he's got the same level of ability we've seen from Luke and Chambers
ExSt Peter Saint Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 I'd rather that Stephens was given a game at CB than Hooiveld if the need arises again. I'd rather one of the young attacking players gets a go rather than Guly from the bench. Other than that, I'm not sure who they youngsters are going to play ahead of. They should be in there on merit if they are good enough.

Crikey a bit harsh. We are integrating youngsters faster than Jimmy Saville! Christ how many more can we sqeeze in? Let's maintain momentum not crush all our hard work this year by going overboard. One step at a time.....
70's Mike Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 only think they should play if MP thinks they are good enough, not just because young and in academy. he has got it right with present policy they rush the others
rooney Posted 11 February, 2014 Share Posted 11 February, 2014 Too much money at stake to risk youngsters in whole games, but give them 10 mins at the end of games by all means if we are winning comfortably.

This totally, I see no need to disrupt the team and land up with a potentially disappointing finish to the season and a slide out of the top half but if we are giving a player 10 minutes at the end I'd much rather it was on of our potential future players than Guly or Hoiveld both of whom are probably on there way out of the club at some point in the near future.
