Lighthouse Posted 8 February, 2014 Share Posted 8 February, 2014 Well, 15 clubs bought players in during January. Anyhow. We are where we are Maybe if we wanted Grant Holt, Josef Jobo and Marvin Emnes on loan we could have got them. I'd like to think we don't.

rallyboy Posted 8 February, 2014 Share Posted 8 February, 2014 I was disappointed at Crouch - he now has the mobility of a telegraph pole and makes Rickie look as quick as Theo Walcott. Apart from leading with his elbows at every opportunity, kicking out when frustrated, and shouting at the ref after committing an obvious foul, he was unlucky to get booked. But Stoke are so much fun to watch it didn't detract from the spectacle. Coming soon - Hammer Films present West Ham v Stoke - good luck to Sky selling that one as a Super Sunday etc! Lighthouse Posted 8 February, 2014 Share Posted 8 February, 2014 Or luuk de Jong, zaha, ince, boriello, Shane long, mitroglou, holtby Long cost over £7m and had scored 3 goals for West Brom this season Zaha has done absolutely f**k all since joining Utd and has looked sh*te every time I've seen him recently. Boriello has played 4 games for Milan this season. Ince has only ever done it in the Championship and apparently cost over £1m for a 4 month loan However you have apparently watched a large number of Borussia Monchengladbach and Olympiakos games this season so I will bow to your superior knowledge on De Jong and Mitroglou. Wes Tender Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 Hughes had the audacity to claim post match that they had the better of the first half. The man is a delusional fantasist. The match stats clearly show that apart from the scoreline, they didn't match us in any department, let alone shade us.
Saint_clark Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 One of the most disgusting, cynical fouls I've ever seen on Shaw near the end that for me should have been a red card. CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 One of those games when the result leaves you with a feeling of general dissatisfaction although to be honest about it I can't see the two dropped points mattering very much in the grand scheme of things, indeed when it comes to the desirability of a Europa League place I'm as skeptical as MP clearly is re that matter. It's not that often we see our midfield bossed at St Marys but let's face it Charlie Adam and his mates came pretty damn close to doing that yesterday. Perhaps it showed that they needed the points far more than we did. Nevertheless we were (just about) the better team on the day I thought, but time and time again we tried to pick our way through the center of their defence only to find ourselves washing up against a rock known as Shawcross. I draw two conclusions from that: 1 - What a formidable combination Shawcross and Lovren would make. 2 - Sans Puncheon we really need to find some genuine width from somewhere. As for the principle talking points, at the time I put their second goal down to a superbly taken corner rather than a error from Artur Boruc - I'll watch again it on TV later. It seems to me our corners are too often 'lofted' into the box while there's were 'fired' in at pace, a lesson learnt I hope. On a happier note if Rickie's opener was a painting ... well they'd hang it in the National Gallery.

SB Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 Apart from the 2 goals for each team and a good strike in the first half, I don't remember many clear chances, one thing that did frustrate me was the amount of un needed passes, Clyne had an excellent opportunity second half to score but bottled it. Professor Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 Once again this game showed that we can usually keep the majority of possession but the there is problem in the back four when Lovren is out and possession doesn't turn into enough goals. If we don't add to the CB stock in the summer the back four problem will continue. Up front IMKO we need a winger who can change a game. Tom Ince going on loan from Blackpool to CP may turn out to be a missed opportunity.

eelpie Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 The stats might have shown that we were superior, but Stoke wanted the ball more than we did, and were successfully intercepting indecision on our part. sgnificantly in the centre of the pitch. We were quite sloppy at the start and particularly after both our goals. The conditions made it difficult for both teams but Stoke were more ruthless. By the end I was relieved to get the point because both teams were understandably tiring and I could see us making mistakes and conceding again. We need Lovren back asap, and BigVic to start against Hull and especially physical teams like Sunderland and Sham.

Leicestersaint Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 What sub do you think he should´ve made? Not much from the bench today that would have improved the team... VectisSaint Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 Once again this game showed that we can usually keep the majority of possession but the there is problem in the back four when Lovren is out and possession doesn't turn into enough goals. If we don't add to the CB stock in the summer the back four problem will continue. Up front IMKO we need a winger who can change a game. Tom Ince going on loan from Blackpool to CP may turn out to be a missed opportunity. Really don't understand the people who still think we need a winger. We don't play wingers any more, our full backs provide the width and act as wingers. The problem yesterday was that the FBs didn't do enough of that for some reason, and when they did they did what all wingers would do and lob hopeful crosses into the box for Shawcross to deal with eyes closed. It was pathetic, apart from the few minutes when the rain/hail lashed down, why ow why did we decide yesterday of all days to play hoofball instead of our normal game, keeping it on the deck. If it was a deliberate tactic then it was scandalous. Our central midfield were poor, I cannot remember Schneiderlin and Cork having such in ineffective game (and I am a huge fan of both), Shaw did not try to beat his man tall in the second half until about 80 minutes in. Not convinced Lallana was on the pitch, following several immense performances from him he was completely snuffed out, JRod was hopeless, completely bereft of ideas, and Lambert scored a stunning free kick and did very little else, I feel he is still carrying a slight injury. Steve Davis was MOTM by a mile (and yet the moron behind me was calling for him to be taken off because we needed pace, you really coudn't make it up). Jose Fonte had his worst game for a while, several really poor decisions and bad passes. Yoshi was very good, his reading of the game is top class, makes up for his lack of stature sometimes, although I will still be glad to get Lovren back. Hopeless, hopeless performance, but credit to Stoke who were well organised, defended well, stopped us playing with their niggly tactics and generally were hardly ever troubled. One of the most disappointing games for a long long time.

Patrick Bateman Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 Why would Stoke want to sell Shawcross? If (for example) we caved in and sold Shaw for £30m. Stoke would also cave in for £xxm for Shawcross, especially if we're targeting a higher league position next year. Market forces, any player is up for sale, any. Okay Chelsea after this weekend might take £300m for Hazard, but you know what I'm saying.
Dark Munster Posted 9 February, 2014 Share Posted 9 February, 2014 Premiership survival is the number 1 priority for teams like Stoke (and us!) so it would take silly money for them to sell Shawcross to us. CylonKing Posted 10 February, 2014 Share Posted 10 February, 2014 First time down in Southampton for a match and weekend away for a few years. Was great to be at St Marys again and thought we were going to go on and bull-doze Stoke after the first goal, though before the match, I did predict Crouch scoring against us, just thought it would be a consolation and not an equaliser. A real roller coaster of a 1st half but a disappointing 2nd half and overall result. Stoke did well at the back and deserved the point but we just weren't at the races. Thought most of the team were off the boil, only Davis and Yoshida could take any credit from the match really. Clyne and Shaw, as has been said, kept cutting inside though to be fair to them, usually they had no support with them on the wings so looked very isolated. A number of times people around us in the Kingsland were urging one of our midfielders to follow the pass out to the left or right to offer support, but they always hung back. Very one dimensional and slightly disappointing, but as ever, we had a great time at St Marys and in Southampton over the weekend. Won't be leaving it as long next time, we missed supporting Saints.
