Saints away form

Isn't it nice to witness a couple of decent 3-0 away wins and no thumpings so far this season.

Over the years Saints have generally struggled away from home, especially in the top division, and here we stand with the second best defensive record on the road.

Hope this positive post doesn't come back to haunt me further down the line just as the 7-1 defeat at lower league Watford did many years ago when we had won the home leg League Cup game 4-0 and we toddled off to Vicarage Road expecting an easy transition into the next round!!

I suppose it helps that Pochettino drills into the team they need to play the same way both at home and away so the mentality of the players won't be different. And also away from home we are far less likely to play teams that sit back and it has been breaking down teams that sit deep at St Marys which has been a bit of an Achilles heel for us at times.

Our away record is good, unfortunately our home record is average. We have only gained 3 points more at home than we have away. Winning more at home is the difference between 9th and 7th/8th.

Arguably our home form AND our away form is "average". We are in 9th place in both the home and the away league tables, after all...

We've only lost three times at home, one to a very good Chelsea side, one to a Spurs side who came up against our weakest defensive lineup of the season and one in a freak game against Villa that 99 times out of 100 we'd have won comfortably. Our draws have been balanced, two draws against top opposition (Man City, Arsenal) and two against mediocre teams (Sunderland, West Ham). We've won the rest, as well as 3 cup ties. I'd have certainly taken that at the start of the season.

Agreed basically, our away form is good when compared to what we are used to, but about average for the league. However, historically most teams do significantly better at home than away, a trend that is being bucked by some teams recently (Sunderland for example who until recently were hopeless at home, Spuds and Villa also better away). But 15 of the PL teams are better at home than away, and the best are significantly better at home, rather than marginally like us). Being average at home is a recipe for being average overall. If we had done as well as we have away and combined that with an above average home record, then we would probably be top 7, rather than 9th. Turn defeats into draws, and draws into wins and we would have an outstanding home record. Taking your point about our defeats and draws the conclusion is still that we have failed to win in more than half of our home games, the top 5 teams in the league have lost only once at most at home. To be successful we need to do better at home, or we have to buck a long-standing trend that teams win more at home than away.
