Just heard this on BBC sport. Confirmed on SSN.

Gary Monk you say? I remember in 2000 going to Ayia Napa and spending loads of time chatting to Keven Davies, James BT, Dean Richards (RIP) and Hassan Kachloul. Monk was there although I had no idea he was a Saints player.

That's a crazy move. Who can they expect to come in and do a better job at this point of the season? If they get the appointment wrong they could end up relegated.

They've appointed Gary Monk. He is their manager for the foreseable.

Garry Monk is the new Tim Sherwood

More to this than meets the eye I suspect. Swansea are hardly known for being trigger happy and there has been talk of Laudrup wanting to leave for months.

Potential Poch successor ready to go in the summer, then.

Didn't Spurs want to poach Laudrup before they decided they'd rather poach MoPo? If Laudrup's still available in the summer it could be good news for us...

Laudrup will still get a very decent job in the summer.

They have been poor this season. But winning a trophy at Swansea with their style of football was an excellent achievement.

Guess Michu being out so much has hurt them along with the Europa league.

Monk was announced a few hours ago as joining the coaching staff, the bookies weren't wrong in responding by cutting Laudrup to 4/7 as next manager to go.

Not the position that you want to be in ahead of the local derby against Cardiff at the weekend with their opponents in the bottom 3 and your own team quietly dropping into that relegation battle. Massive risk by Swansea to do that just after the transfer window closes, could see them heading down now.

Jenkins added: "It is the first time in nearly 10 years that the club has parted with a manager in this way, but we had to remove the constant uncertainty surrounding the club and Michael's long-term future with us.

"I had a meeting with Michael today in a final attempt to support him and establish a way to improve the work of the backroom team to secure the results we need over the final 14 Premier League games.

"However, after thinking long and hard about the best way forward, I felt it was unlikely we would achieve a stable environment at the club to allow us to get back to basics and produce the performance levels that have served Swansea City so well over the last few years.

"Now we need to put that uncertainty behind us and move forward as a united football club on all fronts, while placing on record our gratitude to Michael for the work he has done over the last 18 months and wish him well for the future.''

Sounds like there was something more going on then?

Deffo 100% related to Saints ;)

Anyway, poor decision, and one which could definitely backfire. I always say that if a replacement is not lined up straight away, 9 times out of 10 it is a poor decision.

Mental decision to "part company" with Laudrup ... but whatever floats their boat.

However, how the hell is Gary Monk old enough to manage a club? That's the most offensive thing, that's made me feel ancient - more so than Beattie managing. B*gger.

Well I guess there is always a chance he could surprise a few people. I guess he knows the team and the players but if I supported Swansea I think I'd be very unhappy with that appointment.

I think this is the key part of the Swansea statement...

He looked like he was going to leave in the summer, his heart wasn't in it anymore and that was possibly affecting team performances which haven't been good lately. They've been on the slide ever since the League Cup win.

Very, very strange on the face of it. There have been whispers of discontent, and changing the back room staff today (while laudrop was away in Paris I believe ... For what reason?) made things look ominous, but I didn't see this coming, at least not now. Why not wait until the end of the season and / or you have a proper replacement lined up? Reading between the lines I guess Swansea felt laudrop wasn't likely to stay past this season, but it looks a bit like cutting their own nose off to me. They could very well regret this decision big time come May.

Sat evening against Cardiff on telly. Going to be a great spectacle

Currently listening to the guardians football podcast that came out earlier.

They touch on how Swansea have lost their fizz and that the manager could well lose his job. Also how baffled they are with their transfer policy

And here was me thinking they were one of the more sensibly-run clubs.

Of course, this might well have been the right decision in the circumstances. Something hasn't been right there for a while.

Laudrup managerial history

Brondby (quit)

Getafe (quit)

Spartak (sacked)

Mallorca (quit)

Swansea (sacked, with heavy speculation he was going to quit in the summer anyway)

Sounds like a bit of a flake to me.

This. Working in Swansea, I heard this has been festering since the summer and has had something to do with Laudrup's agent and transfers. Heard at the weekend Laudrup was not even coaching the first team anymore, telling them " you're professional footballers, you know what to do". Source - connected Swan fan.

Reading between the lines....

Their form in the last 10 as per BBC is 1W 3D 6L. The Chairman /board has wanted the strengthen on the coaching side by adding Gary Monk (possibly with a view to the summer), Laudrup has told him not to change anything and said if you do then sack me. So he has....

Posted

The move to remove his back room staff seemed fishy. I doubt laudrup was happy and they've gone for the nuclear option. Really hope saints don't end up in a similar position and we can keep potchettino and build on his initial success.

Posted

I don't buy the - why not wait until the summar argument. They are on a terrible run at the moment, and if Laudrup had decided he was going to go, is he really going to care about turning it around...?

I think if they kept him and the above is assumed they were probably heading towards relegation anyway

Posted

So odd seeing Garry Monk becoming a regular premier league player and now manager, after so many years as an unused sub at saints.

I think I might put some money on Aaron Martin going on to captain and manage Wrexham in the PL in ten years.

Posted

I remember watching Garry Monk play for Saints. Can't claim to have said "this guy will be a Premier League manager one day" - more likely to have made some tacky comment about Cockney rhyming slang.

How else would a manager leave a club?

I do agree with you that the length of stay at each club has been relatively short and the root of the problem at each club has been transfer policy.
