So my well traveled friends with the wife finaly conceding that large inclusive hotel holidays are not for me/us we're thinking of getting a villa in Portugal for this years holiday, never been before so any recommendations of areas to look at/avoid.............

Why not go for something in between the two extremes. We often go to apartment hotels - you get the extra space and kitchen so you can cook your own meals, but still have the nice pool, room cleaning entertainment and other people around if you want it. This kind of thing

Went to a Rosemary Reynolds villa last year and it was great. Really nice villas all along the Algarve.
