Roger Posted 1 February, 2014 Posted 1 February, 2014 Over the season we've had 57.7% possession. Swansea top with 59.9%.
Smirking_Saint Posted 1 February, 2014 Posted 1 February, 2014 Phenominal achievement. Not sure what Mopo changed second half but thats what we need, to be that tad bit more clinical
Batman Posted 1 February, 2014 Posted 1 February, 2014 Phenominal achievement. Not sure what Mopo changed second half but thats what we need, to be that tad bit more clinical Imagine MP with the city squad.
S-Clarke Posted 1 February, 2014 Posted 1 February, 2014 We're an excellent possession team, but can sometimes lack a bit of clinical punch in and around the box. You'd have to say that if we had someone with the attributes of Klose or Silva in the side, we'd be simply unstoppable.
RedArmy Posted 1 February, 2014 Posted 1 February, 2014 I'd rather be 2nd in points. Says it all that the 2 sides with the most possession aren't the best 2 sides in the league...

kpturner Posted 1 February, 2014 Posted 1 February, 2014 Well Swansea this season show that possession stats mean bugger all if you are not putting the ball in the net. For that reason it's difficult to get excited about our own stats in comparison.
Dr Who? Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 Just shows the possession means sod all, unless you turn it into goals. What is that the teams 9th and bottom half!
corky morris Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 Just shows the possession means sod all, unless you turn it into goals. What is that the teams 9th and bottom half! Maybe? Would be interesting to see how they compare chances created & converted. Dont know, but I would say our percentage is not great.
Wiggles31 Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 Isn't it great to see our side playing such attractive football. If they can get it right in the sunmer window then we'll be lethal. Just need to create more chances in possession and improve in finishing. I love seeing teams like Arsenal and City struggling to get the ball off us. Much better than West Ham/Stoke football.
Appy Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 Our football is so much more effective than Swansea's too.
Stud mark of doom Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 Just shows the possession means sod all, unless you turn it into goals. What is that the teams 9th and bottom half! When I looked last the top 9 team in in possession, by some margin, were the top 9 in the league. The only exceptions were Swansea (and Newcastle, who are poor possession wise). Very strong correlation with success. Swansea are the exception.
RedArmy Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 We are 9th in shots per game, which shows how ineffective we've been in some games despite having more of the ball.
Faz Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 We are 9th in shots per game, which shows how ineffective we've been in some games despite having more of the ball. No it doesn't. It just shows we are 9th on shots per game.

Don't know about that just basing it on the top 2 as per thread. I do not have the other teams possessions to hand.
Dr Who? Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 But to say that the teams at the top have maps possession does not work, as the top 2 as per this thread are bottom half and 9th out of 20! Anyone got the full list for this season?
Dr Who? Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/premier-league/ballbesitz/wettbewerb_GB1.html Seems like we are not second and Swansea not top!
bazza Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 Possession for possession's sake is pointless. It's what a team does with it that counts.
Dr Who? Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 Possession for possession's sake is pointless. It's what a team does with it that counts. Agreed, all about the penetration.
DuncanRG Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 What Swansea being top does prove is that possession doesn't mean much on its own. Still, very pleasing. We've got a better forward line and infinitely better defence than they do.
Ohio Saint Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 You can hold it and control it all you like, but if you don't stick it in there then someone else will beat you to it. Then you are left with having to come from behind. I'd rather get in there quickly and often, let someone else worry about all that holding and stuff.
whelk Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/premier-league/ballbesitz/wettbewerb_GB1.html Seems like we are not second and Swansea not top! depends where you look http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/England-Premier-League
whelk Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/premier-league/ballbesitz/wettbewerb_GB1.html Seems like we are not second and Swansea not top! and how do they get 49.1%? cant remember last game we have not had majority of possession - prob Swansea at home
Torrent Of Abuse Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/premier-league/ballbesitz/wettbewerb_GB1.html Seems like we are not second and Swansea not top! Not sure where they get a "BP minimum" for pretty much all teams of 0%. Seems a little bit screwy to me.
Dr Who? Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 and how do they get 49.1%? cant remember last game we have not had majority of possession - prob Swansea at home True, I have no idea where these figures are coming from, as you point out, we have most possession in nearly every game.
Dr Who? Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 depends where you look http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/England-Premier-League I prefer this one. Interesting that Swansea are top of the pass accuracy as well. So they must get tacked a lot, as the possession and pass accuracy are high, but the shots are not!
Doctoroncall Posted 2 February, 2014 Posted 2 February, 2014 Just shows the possession means sod all, unless you turn it into goals. What is that the teams 9th and bottom half! There was only this one until Wigan blew it last season... No team who achieve greater than 50% possession have been relegated from the PL. Still not bad, only one team in 63!
