Squad Size

By my calculations when Osvaldo leaves and if no one else comes in we do still have 23 players in our first team squad. We are quite light on experience but we do have it in all key areas and through the spine of the team.

The only problem I can see is if we have a mass of injuries to key or experienced players then we are going to look very light. Some would say that is the same for most teams.

GK - Boruc, Davis, Gazzaniga

Def - Fonte, Lovren, Yoshida, Hooiveld, Clyne, Shaw, Chambers

Mid - Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Cork, Davis, Lallana, Ramirez, Ward-Prowse, Do Prado, Isgrove, Reed

Fwd - Lambert, Rodriguez, Gallagher

As much as I would love another forward I think the squad looks fairly well balanced and I think the management are doing the right thing by not signing players in a panic just to bolster the numbers. It's surely better to get the right players next summer and in the meantime give those coming through the Academy an opportunity to stake a claim.

with Ramirez injured we could do with another attacking midfielder. A flair player that can dribble and beat a man. We've got plenty of neat and tidy workers, but not a great deal of variety off the bench. If Ramirez can get fit quickly and find a way of making his style work then perhaps there isn't a need.

Sums it up perfectly for me. Gallagher will be a much better player for being involved now IMO.

For goodness sake mate why ruin the last twenty five threads of nocturnal enuresis with such an utterly sensible balanced commentary? Could you not have slipped in a "Gallagher is too young" or "we must spend spend spend on anything and anyone" type comment?:-)....PS I still remember that time in Bucharest at the casino after the Saints match lol...

Yep I missed that and if I am honest I thought I may get one or two wrong and was waiting to be MLG'd

Matt Targett is going to be training with us and he has a chance to get into the side if we see that he’s able to perform at the level that we expect.”

Having watched the performance v Arsenal without Lovren, Clyne, Wanyama Ramirez and Lambert I would say that we are still in a pretty good place !

Sure it would be nice to replace the nutcase should it be confirmed that he has left but there is absolutely no need to make any panic buy in this window !

This second half of the season is a great opportunity to promote and blood some of the next crop of young players.

Probably another consideration taken into account when deciding against new additions. The long-term plan has always been to promote the young players, so if a young player who is deemed good enough is available in a position we're short....then why the hell not use them, and save the cash?

Make sense for me. Trust the young lads, the coaching stuff will know if they're good enough or not. And having a record of Bale, Chambo, Theo, Adam, Chambers, Shaw, Targett, Gallagher, JWP...you can be sure as hell that the other young players are good a good standard.

What we have now is a very refined and young squad.

I'd still expect Hooiveld, Guly and a couple others to go in the summer, and 4 or 5 quality additions, as well as 1 or 2 more academy graduates making the grade.

How much do you think 4/5 quality additions will cost? The reason I ask is I believe Liebherr wants to sell so therefore only a new buyer will put the money in? Will they or will they asset strip?

To me, it looks like we are using the January window to strip some deadwood. Players sell higher at this window, so it's a good idea.

We will hopefully be buying some squad players in the summer though, when prices are lower. In the meantime, we might use our league safety to further blood youngsters like JWP and SG along with some others. It seems to me that we are entering a period of greater financial prudence, but not a fire sale or a long term plan for the sale of the club.

£30 million, similar to the last two summers.

Not all good players have to be £8 million +. Just look at Clyne and Davis.

Where has Katharina said she was going to sell? Where do you think the money was coming from beforehand?

by my reckoning, we'll have 17 players in the Squad list. The rest count as U21 players so don't count in the official '25 man' Squad list.

On paper it sounds ludicrous, on the pitch it looks fantastic.

I thought that, too......and .the only player " left " who doesn't have a number is Jonno Forte. Could it be that MP is thinking of giving him ..........NO, NO... it's too silly I won't even say it .

Peculiarly, now all has been said and done, I'm actually relatively happy with our business this window. A lot of the deadwood has been allowed to leave and the big troublemaker has gone too, and seemingly we get to recoup the money we spent on him. (If Juve take up the option.) Granted that leaves us short up top, but yet another academy prospect has stepped up.

As people have said this window already, why sign anyone now? We're bound to be safe, we're only a few points away from guaranteed safety and with the players we have, 8th-10th is realistically where we'll finish anyway. The only benefit bringing another player in now could have achieved is that they'd have half a season to bed in. Let the academy show what they've got to offer, and spend money on the positions that need strengthening in the summer.

Whose dream was it that half the first team would be academy prospects? Corteses? We're getting there.

Where do you get this belief from ?

Nothing that has been said by the club indicates that it will be sold in the near future?

Just because the club have not said they are not selling does not mean that they are.

I am not selling my house just because I have not told anybody I am not selling it does not mean that I am selling it. ( for all the pedants out that I have just stated that I am not selling my house) but you all know what I mean.

Because without anything being said speculation will occur, human nature and if you took out speculation out of football you would not have forums like this.

I don't think any of us mind speculation. That's why we're here. Its the way you stated the club will be sold in the summer that gets my back up - as though you have some kind of factual basis for your assertion. Speculate away, but don't dress it up a fact.

BTW, the club will not be sold in the summer.

It does look great doesn't it. A young vibrant English based team who seem to care for each other, the club and it's fans. It is a world apart from the journeymen who didn't give a **** in the last season of our last stint in the Prem.
