S-Clarke Posted 28 January, 2014 Share Posted 28 January, 2014 I don't think he's had a thread this season....but he's been quality in my opinion. People will question why Clyne is not playing, and it's not because Clyne is poor....it's because Chambers has taken the opportunity and has nailed that RB spot as his own. He was brilliant again tonight, he has some really nice skills too in an attacking aspect, which you don't expect! It's also very easy to forget that he's, again, only 18. Plays way above that age with his maturity. Have we ever been in a situation whereby we've had 2 right backs of this level competing for the first team? The Kraken Posted 28 January, 2014 Share Posted 28 January, 2014 He doesn't (yet) give us the attacking options that Clyne does. But he's clearly got bags of talent, is learning all the time, and is very much improved since his first games of the season. I really don't know which one of Clyne or Chambers I prefer right now, which is a great problem for the manager to have.

Lallana's Left Peg Posted 28 January, 2014 Share Posted 28 January, 2014 An absolute pipe dream but if the club managed to keep Shaw, Chambers, JWP, Reed, Gallagher, and a few others knocking on the first team door at the club for their careers it would be epic. Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 28 January, 2014 Share Posted 28 January, 2014 Playing really well & seems to have overtaken Clyne in MoPo's estimation currently. Like Shaw, going to be one hell of a player.

melmacian_saint Posted 28 January, 2014 Share Posted 28 January, 2014 Making the most out of Clyne's fitness woes, still think he panics a bit and is sometimes caught on his back. On the right track though, and he looks brave so it's definitely looking good for him!

The Cat Posted 28 January, 2014 Share Posted 28 January, 2014 He's increasing in confidence all the time and has started to get forward more because of that. Has all the attributes to be a top class player for years to come.
krissyboy31 Posted 28 January, 2014 Share Posted 28 January, 2014 Was surprised he started tonight. I thought we would have gone with Clyne's extra pace but he was excellent.

Tony F Posted 28 January, 2014 Share Posted 28 January, 2014 Around the 75 minute mark tonight he took a high ball, running toward his own corner flag. Played keepy-uppy with two headers (despite being closely marked), then right footed it high and down the line.....Jay Rod darned nearly beat the goalie to it to win the game for us. Such big balls to try what he did - but full credit to him - he has such confidence as well as talent.
Saint Garrett Posted 28 January, 2014 Share Posted 28 January, 2014 Excellent since he's come in. Not fussed if either him or Clyne play, both top drawer.
S-Clarke Posted 29 January, 2014 Author Share Posted 29 January, 2014 When ever i see a thread about Chambers or Clyne, i look out for your comment! Chambers has everything clyne has but height and strength too. He's going to be awesome. I think they're very similar in aspects of their game, but Clyne does him for pace, and that is an attacking outlet which we do miss when Clyne isn't around. It's a really tough call, because both of these guys are top, top draw. We've got a situation whereby we can tailor for the opposition now. John Boy Saint Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Thought he was top drawer tonight, I have to say having seen him really for the first time in Spain pre season how impressed I was at WBA first game of the season didn't look to phased by it all, and since those 2 first viewings whenever I have heard his name read out on the starting team sheet have had no fears for him at all. The guys on the conveyer belt at the academy really have a viable target at this club and one of the best bits is so far everyone of them who have had a chance have taken it with the confidence of much older players. Saint_clark Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Chambers is effective attacking as well, he seems to get beyond the man and get the cross on his fair share of times. The reason he isn't quite as effective as Clyne is probably the fact he's about 3 seasons behind experience wise. It does beg the question though, how long will Clyne be happy to play second fiddle considering he left Palace to get games in the Prem? At least if we do need to sell we'll get a good fee for either of them.
studentsaint Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Said today whilst watching the game, although its good to have 3 great full backs, it's a shame one has to sit on the bench. Chambers used to be a RM and I'd like to see us mould him back into 1. All 3 could play and when Clyne uses his pace to overlap, chambers is great rb cover. He had the first touch and close control that a RM needs.

austsaint Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Nice dilemma to have, Chambers and Clyne. I prefer to see Clyne playing with his extra speed and get forward play - at this stage I trust him more defensively too. But what a good athlete young Chambers is! And he has a good attitude with the right amount of confidence. I really think he is going to go further in the game than JWP; I just hope that he and Clyne can get sufficient playing time to remain content as it certainly seems MP has a slight preference for CC as thing stand. Shanghai Saint Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 If he could continue to bang them in like he did versus Burnley maybe play Clyne ahead of Chambers - his pace would be a huge asset.
Rasiak-9- Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Think Clyne is a bit better defensively (don't forget the start of the season when we had the first choice back four). Not totally sure about Chambers' positional sense (Sunderland's first goal the other week was largely down to Chambers playing everyone onside IIRC) and still a little apprehensive about him facing a really, really top quality winger. Both are great footballers though and we have our right-back slot totally sorted for many years to come.
farawaysaint Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Chambers is fantastic but his crossing is not up to the standard of the rest of his game (at the moment) if he improves in that aspect he's a future England right back guaranteed. niceandfriendly Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Thought Chambers had his best game for us last night, he hardly put a foot wrong. I was surprised and a little disappointed not to see Clyne start as I still think he is better defensively, but Chambers may have secured his starting place for the foreseeable after recent performances. That could be down to a lot of other things but agree with you Roge still think Clyne is the better player. Still Chambers has exceeded my expectations in the same way JWP hasn't. This is one of the things that really impresses me - it's one thing to turn out these skillful players like clockwork, quite another to turn them out so confident in their own ability and utterly unphased by starting a Premier League game at 18. Lazlo78 Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Not totally sure about Chambers' positional sense (Sunderland's first goal the other week was largely down to Chambers playing everyone onside IIRC) Suprisingly enough it was Lovren playing Borini onside for their 1st goal! Roger Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Clyne seems to have replaced Lambo as your poster boy..! I just haven't hardly seen him make a mistake and is just class. Have to say chambers was brilliant last night but v harsh on Clyne to be left out. Lambert is a hero for me. I think his legs are going sadly. No one comes close to le tiss tho in terms of greatness. John Boy Saint Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 I think the Chambers speed issue is being clouded by the height and subsequently stride length issue creating the illusion of Clyne being "so much faster" there have been a few occasions where the ball has been pinged deep up the right wing (there was one last night) and you have thought "oh dear Chambers isn't getting that" then promptly gets to it and brings it under control. Its a very nice very healthy positional competition, on the other side Luke can blow hot and cold without too much fear of being dropped, whereas with Chambers & Clyne they are 2 different shaped players who are keeping each other on their toes. Webby Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 I said a while back that chambers is arguably better than shaw at the moment (this was maybe a month or so ago), certainly more consistent. Amazes me that he's kinda gone under the radar a bit.
