Wanyama has played as a centre back in the past and Yoshida doesn't fill me with confidence (he was very much our weak link last night). Unlikely to happen on Saturday, but it isn't a completely bizarre suggestion.

Yoshida was solid apart from one big mistake against a very good Arsenal side, against a much lesser side he'll be better.

He was far from solid, it wasn't just the goals we conceded, his poor distribution throughout and decision making put Saints on the back foot on a number of occasions.

He is just OK. He's not great, but he's fine to stand in occasionally.

Thought he handled Arsenal well last night, he's just not as good as Lovren.

How was Yoshida responsible for the goals we conceded?

He played well against a very physical Giroud. Apart from the goals, they rarely threatened Boruc.

rubbish, Maya played pretty well and his distribution was Ok.

Which goal last night was Yoshida's fault?

Rodriguez at fault for the first and Cork/Schneiderlin left Cazorla unmarked for the second. He had one big mistake with distribution which thankfully didn't cost us, and then one long ball that went straight through to the opposition, other than that his distribution was no worse than Fontes. Certainly doesn't warrant dropping for a midfielder.

At the end of the day, is Wanyama going to be any better than Yoshida at CB? Probably not, but in the league isn't the place to try that sort of stuff. It can wait to pre-season, and let's be honest, the club aren't going to play CM's at CB whilst we have Jos and Maya available - and quite right too.

You'd argue that the 2nd goal would have been sniffed out by Wanyama. I love Cork, he's been brilliant, but he doesn't sense danger in the same way as Wanyama does in that deep DM role.

Yes, Rodriguez was also at fault, but Yoshida was the one marking the eventual goalscorer. Giroud outmuscled him.

That is being incredibly picky, not like you at all.

You're clueless.

What else could Yoshida have done in that situation. Balled was played in with pace, close to goal, in an area that favoured Giroud. Yoshida was as tight as he could be.

Excellent finish that's it.

It was a pretty classy finish, that was well manufactured.

The error came from Jay Rodriguez, end of that.

Not picky - just wrong. Someone who's never meaningfully watched or played the game.

Should stick to his make-believe games.

Giroud would have had a harder time scoring that by attempting to outmuscle Lovren or Wanyama.

Giroud flicked the ball instinctively/first time - nothing to do with being outmuscled. Outmuscled is when a player has time on the ball to make space or prepare a shot.

He'd have then gone down and they'd probably have been given a penalty. Giroud is a cheating, sly bastard always knows when to give a little shove to put his direct opponent off balance to gain an advantage, also fakes a good penalty.

The ball was played into a space that favoured Giroud - it wasn't a 50/50. Always a risk of committing a foul in those circumstances.

but with Giroud that'd be nearer 80/20, sort of player you just can't be too careful with, he knows it and plays upon it, jeez I watched him for years at Montpellier..he's not changed.

Looking forward to this, being NW London native it's pretty easy for me.

Unfortunately, I will be in the home end - left my Fulham supporting mate to sort tickets, and he did that instead of neutral, ****. Oh well, he will have to put up with a more inebriated and obnoxious KRG than usual, as it will be my first day back on the booze post dry-jan. Unlucky lad.

Got to be winning this game though, anything like a performance like last night from Cork/Morgan and Fulham are going to be in trouble. Can't see Sidwell & Parker being much of a match, we can really over-run them in the middle. Just need to be ruthless, which granted isn't our strong suit.

That was my over-riding impression of his game from last night - lost count of the number of times he jumped into our players while they were trying to head the ball, with no attempt himself to play the ball - don't think the ref once gave a freekick.

Yoshida and Fonte were solid. as for the first goal Yoshida was goal side of Giroud with Boruc close by but Sagna's ball in was behind Giroud which put him between Yoshida and the ball allowing him to stick out his foot and deflect the ball past Boruc. Yoshida was in a good defensive position and as a result unable to block. Criticism of him is more indicative of a lack of awareness on the part of the critic than any poor play. As for Wanyama at centre back, utter nonsense. Firstly he hasn't even made an appearance after eight weeks out, secondly this isn't the Scottish Premier playing for the best team against also rans, thirdly he hasn't played there for us in the Premier, and fourthly the back four played well with Cork and Schneiderlin in front against the top team.

Watch the game again - Yoshida had a good match and will improve with more game time.

Yoshi has a big chance now to shine and secure his international place. He knows that and he will deliver. Too much face to lose in Japan if he doesn't take the opportunity presented to him now. In Japan it is socially unacceptable to lose face.

Of course it is. It's also why there are no own goals in Japanese football, because the player would have to commit hari kiri on the pitch.

Should be a cracking game as everyone's said. 4000+ Saints fans should do something to the performance (even though it is very good already). I feel the Yoshi thing is literally because he's the worst defender on the pitch so every says it's his fault. If he was in, say, Stoke's team he would be insane. Give him a chance I say.

Stoke aren't the best team in the world, but doubt they're bad enough to make a defender go insane.

Haha, mate you really cannot blame Yoshida in the slightest. He was goal-side and got tight to his man, which is precisely where you're supposed to be as a defender.

The problem was that Arsenal's centre-forward received a ball to feet in our 6-yard box...(and even then Yoshida did reasonably well to force Giroud to actually have to execute a pretty skillful finish.)

Ah, that's good news. Will relax our striker shortage a little!

If anything, I think he's been struggling with it for the last few months anyway. He needed a bit of a rest, so who knows...he may come back firing!

Fulham have 2 new signings in the team (potenially three if this Greek bloke passes his medical) I wonder if any will be in the squad

Posted

we need 3 points here , just to get back into winning ways

we need this to kick start the month of febuary where theres potentially loads of points up for grabs.

same side , unless Lambert has recovered. Still then would be tempted to keep him on the bench unti the second half?

See ya all in P4 !

Still struggling to believe how bad Fulham were in the reverse encounter. I think there was a spell where our full-backs took smoking breaks and let the midfielders cover their slots, and nobody really noticed. Fulham were shocking that day.

Get at them early and I don't think they'll have much of a response. We've been far too good for better teams than them this season

By a distance the worst performance I have seen this year.

West Ham are in talks to sign Olympiakos striker Kostas Mitroglou. Fulham have already agreed a fee, believed to be £12.4 million

Funny how west ham always find money. When it is assumed they have none

Love it if they went down
