SuperMikey Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Corky was absolutely outstanding in that first half, he was everywhere. Gutted to concede 2 goals so soon after half time and let them in, but showed great spirit to grab one back right away. I think we're one top quality striker away from having a f*cking good team here. It could have been Osvaldo, but maybe somebody more level-headed could do the job.. Also a word for Sam Gallagher tonight who I thought played very well. His positioning and movement was very good - always looking to get in behind the defence. On another day he might have buried that chance when we were 1-0 up but it was a difficult one to put away. It was nice to see a couple of players talking to him after that chance to keep his spirits up too - shows a nice unity that we have here.
John Boy Saint Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 (edited) Thoroughly enjoyed that tonight, most enjoyable to watch and a bloody good shift put in from the boys. Arsenal weren't allowed to play first half did what you expected second half but our equaliser was a real kick in the guts for them. hard to pick a MOTM, Morgan at times wouldn't have looked out of place in an operating theatre he is like a top draw surgeon with the effortless precision he goes about his business. Once again Chambers doesn't look out of place at all. Maya looks like he is getting up to speed knocking off the lack of match rust, a few times in the first half he had already thought what Giroud was going to do before the pass to him was yet to be made. Young Sam, you give that boy match time against seasoned professionals and he will be immense for us, very good full Debut in fact when you look at the money in Yellow shirts cruising round tonight not one of our young nippers looked out of place competing with them. Jose on Solent tonight talking about the team unity was a pretty powerful statement, any Saints fan hearing that can't fail to have felt really good about Saints right now. I now have a month where more than likely I will not be seeing Saints play in person thanks to work, so what a great game to keep me going until March. red&white56 Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 What a great game! So pleased I went tonight. I was expecting a really tough game and possibly to lose. Fantastic performance all round by Saints, motm - Cork, just becuase he caught my eye a bit more then anyone else, but as others have said Spiderman, Shaw, Lallana could all have been motm. Best moment of the night, Arsenal go 2-1 up and their fans start shouting "who are you" at us - they must have been feeling pretty depressed, insecure to pull that one out to sing to us.... Lighthouse Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 What a great game of football that was to watch. Even taking my Saints hat off for a minute, that was 2 teams who play the beautiful game in the right way and there was some excellent stuff from both sides. A draw probably a fair result but I think with a top notch striker we'd have been out of sight at half time. Again. We're making a habit of battering teams 2-2 at the moment. I thought Gallagher was excellent and really gave two decent CBs something to worry about. He missed a couple of chances, notably one at the end of the first half where he wasn't expecting the cross to rebound in front of him and it spooned agonisingly wide of the post. His all round game was very promising though I thought. We have another excellent player on our hands. Great to see Fonte scoring after the week he has had. Genuinely thrilled for him. MOTM for me was Morgan. An absolutely monster today, he was everywhere. If I was David Moyes, I'd be asking the board for another £37m for this guy. I genuinely believe he is top class. Shaw was also exceptional tonight. Only poor performance really was JRod I thought. Had a good assist for Lallana but didn't really effect the game enough otherwise. I loved that equaliser so much. The Arsenal fans were getting all cocky, having been hopeless first half (did Boruc get his first touch of the ball with that corner on 44 minutes?) they suddenly found themselves ahead and then boom! Right back at ya!
austsaint Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Sensational game to watch - only that short spell of Arsenal quality prevented a famous win. Have you ever witnessed such a commanding midfield performance? Morgan and Corky outstanding and Davis once again underlined his quiet efficiency. Surely Lallana is on the plane to Brazil and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a spot for Luke Shaw after another sparkling display. IT was such a feel good night for the Club; Jose's goal; Katharina's attendance, young Sam's first league start; so many Academy players featuring. A special word for Maya too; he did well tonight despite a couple of mistimed passes - his anticipation and speed cut off several dangerous balls to Giroud and co. I'd be happy to see him continue to fill in for Lovren as I'm sure he will improve with game time. If there's only going to be one in during the window I hope it's a striker because the CB strengthening can wait until the summer.
Rasiak-9- Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 I don't think its an exaggeration to say that Morgan Schneiderlin, Jack Cork and Steven Davis are not just three of, but literally THE three most underrated players in the Premiership. Dark Munster Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Fantastic, fantastic game of football between two excellent teams. Some of our passing and one touch play was sublime. We deserved to win I think based on our total domination in the 1st half, but fair play to Arsenal who also had their chances in the 2nd half. offix Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 When you back a team that plays football pretty much as entertainingly as it can be played, you have to be happy. That was really terrific tonight. Yeah, we deserved to win. But frankly the points arent' the biggest deal these days. What matters more is that we're building a side capable of truly being one of the best in the world. Well put. Totally agree. These are exciting times. sandwichsaint Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Brilliant night and so proud of the team, Arsenal were poor? I'm not having that! We were just simply sublime for 45 minutes, we made them look so ordinary, as Poch said it was almost total football at times with the players improvising and interchanging positions with great discipline and understanding, we just seem to have so much team spirit and mental strength now it's hard to believe it's Saints we are watching. In days of yore we would have folded at 1-2 and let the oppo play out for the win, not anymore. Stunning performances all round, Cork probably shaded it for me and on this form he must be close to the England re-build post the World-Cup? MS also back to his very best and if he can maintain that sort of form he will be a massive part in the final third of the season. Gallagher was excellent lots of pace and movement, and never hid at all, always looking for it and linked up well when he could, he didn't look out of place at all. Not read all the thread but I thought Fonte and Yoshi had very sound games, the odd streaky moment but on the whole they complemented each other well. Shaw's best game for some time too he really does look like the next Bale when he's rampaging down the left, he terrorised Sagna all night, interesting to see if he stays as a LB or moves further forward next season. Chambers had probably his best game for Saints last night, I'm a huge Clyne fan and I think he currently shades it in attack and certainly in defence with his recovery pace and his one-on-one defending and tackling, but fair play to MoPo for playing Chambers last night, big call and it paid off for him. Worse case if Shaw goes is that we end up with Clyne at LB and Chambers at RB, that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. If we can make the 'right' big-money buys then we have the nucleus of a squad that can challenge at the highest level over the coming seasons, happy days! Any comments on the clash between Shaw and Sagna in front of the dugouts? I was a long way away but it looked potentially a red card? Boruc threw out a high 50-50 hospital ball, Shaw was always in position to receive it, did jump bravely and played it, battered by Sagna who had no chance of playing the ball fairly and who seemed to lead with his arm/elbow (?), Shaw was flattened and Sagna tactically rolled himself off the pitch and out of the ref's way, astonished not to see at least at least a yellow card, it looked late and it looked dangerous from where I was? PS Thought the ref had an excellent game, he didn't fall for their diving and whinging at all and played some really good stuff (for both teams). 10/10, can we have you every week? Saint Fan CaM Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Incredibly entertaining game. Cork was superb, but then so was Morgan....their partnership has to be one of the best in the league on that display. JRod twice made poor and soft challenges one of which that led to their 1st. Sam G is looking OK but he is still too young to lead the line in a Prem team IMO - we need a strong experienced player if we're to reach our full potential. OldNick Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Lallana has to be one the best players in the country at the minute. His touch and awareness made certain Arsenal players look average.I agree he is superb but years ago we banged on about his lack of power in his shots. he needs to somehow learn how to put pace into his shots on goal. that could be the difference between a top player and a great player

Charlie Wayman Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 One of the best games ever at SMS, a thrilling encounter between two of the best tippy-tappy footballing side in the country. Felt a bit sorry for the new whizz kid missing from two yards with what could have been the match winner. Chambers was awesome, Morgan imperious and Corkie & Davis tigerish. This was no fluke and we should be higher up the league than 9th. We still give away sloppy goals, Jay is a liability in our own box and we need to keep him out of it. Poor old Ward-Prowse just couldn't get up to the pace of the game coming on late. On this showing by Arsenal I am even more convinced that Chelsea will win the PL this year simply because they sussed our game and neutralised our threat after the break, whereas Arsene-al did not. Chez Posted 29 January, 2014 Share Posted 29 January, 2014 Great game, loved almost every minute of it. As happened last year, we steam rollered Arsenal with our immense work rate and fast closing down, but we somehow didn't manage to come away with a win. Last season a lucky own goal was the cause, this season it was us failing to continue the closing down and pressing just after the break allowing Arsenal the room to breath they desperately needed. For all those doubting Lallana's captaincy credentials, you should have seen him shouting at the rest of the side after the Arsenal goals to push up and press them, which we thankfully did. Boric - could he have done better with the second? I've not seen a replay, so just asking. It seemed to take an age to slice into the corner. He didn't have a great deal to do, which shows how well we played. Calm as always, but not too calm. Good to see him come off his line for corners, especially as we lacked a little height. I notice we didn't have men on the posts. Is that new? Chambers - I thought he was absolutely outstanding once again. He gets so tight to opponents, biting at their heals. He's good in the air, quick enough and extremely competent on the ball. He is great going forward, with a brilliant drop of the shoulder. I find it amazing how poor many of the fullbacks are in the top four sides (Sagna for example is woeful) and yet we have three absolutely top draw ones of our own. Fonte - decent solid game. Yoshida - some very good, such as showing pace and nipping in to cut out passes and even being physical on one or two occasions, but some very poor stuff too, such as some weak as **** headers straight back into the danger area (he's Chris Perry Mark II) and a host of poor clearances, some off the studs no less. Lots of effort and I'll cut him some slack as yet again he is thrown in without a run of games, but overall our worst player on the night be a considerable distance Shaw - just wanted to see the guy take Sagna on more, but he can't go to the byeline all night despite my encouragement for him to do so. I'd like to see him shoot more often too. Just drive and hit it three or four times a game. Cork - my man of the match. he was everywhere and I mean everywhere. He was relentless. The only thing he doesn't have is that little touch of guile around the box, but he makes up for it elsewhere - shown perfectly in the first half when bounding forward to near the Arsenal box and then having his through ball cut out, Arsenal breaking before he steals the ball on the edge of our box. There were about 12 blades of grass he didn't cover. I've said it a few times on here. I simply do not understand why MP ignored him earlier in the season. I can understand why VW started, but to not have Cork coming on off the bench when making a centre midfield sub amazed me. Morgan - I thought he was a little quite in the first half, perhaps his good work was towards the other side of the pitch, but he had a great second half once we got going. Lallana - faded a little towards the end, but he works so hard its not surprising. Is there a Saints player more enjoyable to watch. If we are going to go down in Brazil lets go down playing him in the hole where he belongs. Davis - I really enjoy watching him too. His touch is immaculate. He lacks that yard of pace and real dribbling ability, but he has great awareness. The pass to put Shaw in in the second half was top notch. Need a few more goals out of him Morgan and Cork though. JRod - I agree with many that he can't play up the middle on his own. Perhaps as a pair, but not on his own. With every game he seems to grow in confidence and he started like a house on fire. Pity he faded out at the end when we had them on the rack. Gallagher - Excellent debut. Showed great mobility and played on the shoulder of the last defender, which gave the Arsenal centre back real problems. I don't think those two have improved at all, they have just had more protection from Flamini. Stretching teams the other way is not something we have done a great deal with Lambert and made us a more threatening side. I was expecting far less. He looked comfortable at that level. In the end though he will need to score goals to be seen as effective. His work rate and closing down helped us regain possession a lot. I doubt Arsenal have kicked the ball long from the keeper as much all season. I wonder if him coming into the side will create that Man Utd 1992 vibe and the players all stick around. Not sure it will, but you never know.
