Hatch Posted 14 December, 2008 Posted 14 December, 2008 Chris Hoy. Right result IMO. Mclaren came second. Addlington Thrid.
Red Alert Posted 14 December, 2008 Posted 14 December, 2008 Chris Hoy. Right result IMO. Mclaren came second. Addlington Thrid. Steve??
keithd Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 he waffled on a bit eh soon as i saw him walk up to take the award i switched over to top gear. well done the jock fella tho, well deserved
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 A friend of mine was an Olympic cyclist many years ago. She used to train alone by riding from Luton to Brighton and back five times a week. Anyone with the dedication to do that for as many years as Chris Hoy deserves some sort of recognition.
Flyer Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 1st time Ive ever seen a winner and dont have a clue who the hell he is.
St Landrew Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 1st time Ive ever seen a winner and dont have a clue who the hell he is. All the more genuine a winner then. Too many times the winner is decided by how high profile the sport is, not the excellence of the performance. Don't worry though, sportspeople like Chris Hoy will return to obscurity, only to re-emerge in 2012. Right result.
Hatch Posted 15 December, 2008 Author Posted 15 December, 2008 1st time Ive ever seen a winner and dont have a clue who the hell he is. Have you been on Mars for the last 6 months
saint1977 Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 It's the first time I can remember that we've had 9 sportspeople that could have won it and no-one would have quibbled. I mean Rebecca Romeo has won Olympic medals in 2 different sports and didn't even get into the top 3! The only one of the ten that wasn't really going to win was Murray, a very good year but to compete with the other 9, he would have had to have won the US Open. Still, Murray should be a serious contender in the Aussie Open soon.
saint_stevo Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 they should re-name it to "Most Successful British Sportsperson as voted by the public" Where does personality come into it?
Flyer Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 Have you been on Mars for the last 6 months I just checked who he was, I dont care about the Olympics at all. I assumed Lewis Hamilton would win it.
keithd Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 I just checked who he was, I dont care about the Olympics at all. I assumed Lewis Hamilton would win it. why assume hamilton would win it? because you have no interest in the olympics that means nobody else should either? dont understand why you'd assume that at all....
bridge too far Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 I had tears of pride in my eyes last night when all the Olympians who had won medals paraded at the start of the show. What an awesome sight. The Paralympians especially get my admiration. I think it is amazing that people overcome their disadvantages, whether they were born with them or whether they aquired them as the result of an accident. I bet some people with such disabilities would turn inwards - I'm not sure I'd have the strength of character and determination to overcome such barriers. So I'm very pleased that young Ellie won 'Young SPOTY'. I was rooting for either Rebecca Adlington or Rebecca Romero but I'm more than happy that Chris Hoy won. I thought it was a good show all round last night and good to see cycling getting such recognition. Here's the numbers of votes cast: Chris Hoy 283,630 votes Lewis Hamilton 163,864 Rebecca Adlington 145,924 Ben Ainslie 35,472 Joe Calzaghe 34,077 Andy Murray 19,415 Nicole Cooke 18,256 Christine Ohuruogu 7,677 Bradley Wiggins 5,633 Rebecca Romero 4,526
Sheaf Saint Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 I must admit I thought Lewis Hamilton was certain to win it. Not saying Chris Hoy doesn't deserve it but I just assumed that Lewis would get more votes due to his higher media profile.
J Bizzle Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 it would have been an injustice if he did not win. 3 golds in the olympics, would probably have been 4 if they kept his other event in the schedule. the man deserved it more than anyone else.

These people do all their training with little or no money and show tremendous dedication. Well done to them all. Though i did think Lewis would get it due to his higher profile. Col.
Flyer Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 why assume hamilton would win it? because you have no interest in the olympics that means nobody else should either? dont understand why you'd assume that at all.... Because cycling is a minority sport and usually major sports personalities win it.
Thedelldays Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 But Hamilton has no personality. neither does any winner though..really.. if it was just about personality...then jimmy white, eddie the eagle edwards, gazza would have won it every year..
St Landrew Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 neither does any winner though..really.. if it was just about personality...then jimmy white, eddie the eagle edwards, gazza would have won it every year.. Yeah..! Guess the BBC should change their poll to BEST rather than personality. After all, as I keep saying... we want the best, not the legends.
saint_stevo Posted 15 December, 2008 Posted 15 December, 2008 But Hamilton has no personality. Nothing for Murray. neither does any winner though..really.. if it was just about personality...then jimmy white, eddie the eagle edwards, gazza would have won it every year.. Yeah..!
