Ralph Krueger

Article speaks for itself but a few points. The author seems like a funny bloke. He's a business correspondent. He thinks all footballers are "morons". That can't be right, surely.

“But the fact remains, when you’re dealing with morons who don’t listen to outsiders – which is the norm at a football club (I know because I used to be a director at one of them) – then you’ve got no chance of succeeding.”

And,

“Sorry Saints fans, I have to interpret the decision-making of Leibherr in recent days as coherent as that of someone with a few loose screws whose currently residing in a Hampshire nuthouse.”

He notes that Kreugar has a “quest” at Saints but doesn’t say what it is, only that:

“I hope I prove to be wrong and Krueger succeeds with his quest. But I think my tenner is safe, regardless whatever tripe the Saints come up with to justify this latest move.”

I already picked this up and commented on it via the Open letter from Katharina Liebherr thread.

Essentially the man is clearly an idiot if he believes that Rugby players, Ice Hockey players, Olympic Athletes are all capable of assimilating motivational techniques, but for some reason known only to him, football players are not.

So Sir Clive Woodward failed with the club when the dinosaur Redknapp was manager and Lowe Chairman, all those years ago. Therefore it can never work with footballers ever again and anybody who disagrees is obviously a lunatic.

And he has the audacity to talk about people having screws loose.

Incidentally, he was director of communications for under a year at Watford over 7 years ago, so that obviously qualifies him to give such insider knowledge of the intelligence of all footballers.

Nothing wrong with the motivation of our players. MP and staff are doing a brilliant job. Wht do we need a hockey coach to help with that?

Communications. For 12 months. That's funny. Maybe moron footballers is a Watford thing....of 7 years ago.... or maybe it was him.

Even someone with a screw loose wouldn't appoint to its Board a Director who thinks all footballers are morons.

Stretch your imagination and divorce the words "Hockey Coach" from the equation. In the same way that SCW produced brilliant results from motivating our Olympic athletes and you presumably would ask why they should have employed a Rugby Coach?

He obviously has a source very close to the club who feeds him info, which he then reports. The more interesting question is why is the club source leaking mostly negative stories and why have they ramped up in the last few weeks?.........

He said on twitter that he had been speaking with Sibley

I'll stretch my imagine beyond your wildest dreams Wes.... lets not stop at hockey coaches, let's bring in a tennis coach, a swimming coach, a show jumping coach and a bowling coach and have them all join the board.

Think of all the motivational advantages we would have then!!

It's only football in the most high profile league in the World after all.

You seem to miss the point and appear to be incapable of seeing that the role would not have anything to do with his abilities as an Ice Hockey coach, but more to do with his motivational powers, for which he is apparently renowned. But if you believe that that role is adequately fulfilled by Pochettino, then fair enough. Presumably you know for a fact that all of the players are motivated to the maximum already by him, the sums of money they are paid, the honour of wearing the shirt, the esprit de corps, etc. Oh, and also playing in the highest profile league in the World obviously means that no player in that division needs any motivational input to improve themselves. After all, PL players are so much more gifted mentally than those in the Italian, German and Spanish leagues.

But as Tony Yorke believes football players to be morons, how can MP be doing so well at motivating ours single-handedly?

Pochettino bought in an outside motivational speaker during the Spanish summer camp, the firewalking was only part of it. I wouldn't be surprised if the main target for Krueger's efforts were the 230 or so non playing staff, in an effort to 'bring some smiles' back.

Happy for the guy to be here if he has nothing at all to do with the football side of things.

However it sort of reminds me of SCW appointment. It is a bit of a strange decision trying to bring in someone with zero football experience especially at the top level and someone who isn't a business person.

Will see what happens but I don't think we need him tbh.

Not to mention gratuitously offensive to people experiencing mental distress and incredibly badly informed (has he not noticed how dinosaurs like Redknapp are now an increasingly isolated minority!).

Just pulled him on that via Twitter. Let's see what sort of response we get :)

A bit off topic, but do you have ANY evidence from the various sports concerned that SCW's motivation of their athletes produced brilliant results?

I think cycling for one might be a bit miffed by his contribution being bigged up like this.

Nevertheless as an Ice Hockey fan, I'm sure The Oilers ex-coach has plenty of good advice to offer, as a board member.

Speaking as a massive ice hockey fan, and of the Oilers in particular, I think this is a great appointment. The fitness levels in the NHL make most PL footballers look like James Corden. They are honed for explosive speed and physical toughness, something that is a definite advantage in our league. The Oilers also have a policy of developing young players over time and training them to play a certain way, and are rebuilding from a tough few seasons - sound familiar? He should slot in pretty well, I think...

Why did they fire him after only 1 season then, too good for them was he ?

New GM who wanted his own head coach and - in the opinion of many - dropped a very big clanger. A lot of fans have raised the possibility of getting Ralph back.

But he's now involved with Canada's Olympic hockey team, and you don't get anywhere near that unless you're extremely highly regarded.

Look, don't knock Ralph - he's a very talented guy with many attributes, and an extremely pleasant person. My only reservation is with his lack of football experience, but then we don't know what his role will be, do we?

“I don’t pretend to know a lot about football … I mean, I’ve been in Europe a long time and certainly watched it,”

probably better qualified in that regard than Lowe was then

The Southampton Saints were relegated from the Premier League and played in the third tier three years ago

No Mr Krueger, no...don't you f'king dare do it...

..does emphasise why Americans & Canadians should not meddle in our national sport *

*along with chinks, Malaysians, and Arabs etc to a lesser extent,

TBF Kreuger didn't actually call us that, the bloke who wrote the article did.

From the little I've picked up about his background, I would have thought his job title would be closer to "High Performance Director" than "Motivational Speaker". A lot of knowledge and experience in this type of role can be transferred across sports and seems to relate closely to the things directly affecting the players that Cortese has been credited for (i.e. bringing mattresses to away games, diet, and all the other little things that we probably haven't heard about). Makes sense to have someone who has this specific role and is a specialist in sport alongside a CEO responsible for finances (completely different jobs!).

Yes- I did realise that, but thanks for clarifying for the masses. I would not want someone such as Ottery to get the wrong end of the stick when he reads the board after he's done the hoovering

hmmm...So I'm guessing this could be one of the things that pushed Cortese over the edge....wonder what else has been going on behind the scenes

Cortese handed in his notice over 3 months ago, when Krueger says "a while back" he could mean any time since. It would have been prudent to have a contingency plan if NC were to follow through with his resignation.

Can't understand the negativity?

Its not like he's replacing MP as manager, he's on the Board and has a lot of sporting experience by the sounds of it.

Let's see what he's able to bring to the table before writing him off completely eh?
