Mauricio Pochettino staying as Southampton manager - Official

That was a very cagey press conference he gave, and included contradictions.

"I heard the news just as you did."

"I pre-alerted the players to what was going to happen."

"My contract is for 17 months."

'"I'm committed to the end of season and that's it."

His statement that he'd had no detailed conversation with NC is not credible. Nor that he'd only spoke with KL for 5 mins. Obviously trying to juggle a lot.

My take:

- he's made an informal commitment to stay for rest of season

- that NC almost certainly is going to be out there preparing a bid

- both MP and NC hope that the outcome will be a sale of the club to NC's new consortium

- ...but obviously it will depend on them outbidding whoever else comes in. 50/50 at best, although the *do* have one huge advantage: any other buyer will likely face a much more turbulent situation with MP and players leaving.

But in the short term, it's good news.

Just listened to his press conference and he was very clear, very affirmative that his job is to get us through to the end of the season in best possible way.

Funny i thought that the spanish version was far less committal than the translated version, and that some of the complexities and subtleties where lost in translation.

I agree, a lot of what he said was not directly translated by the translator, for example, at one point he said "I'm here until the summer" which was translated to "I'm here until the end of my contract".

I do get the impression that he is being professional enough to stay on until the end of the year. He made a comment going back to last years announcement, in the sense that the situation was different - i.e.. it was in pre-season and not in the middle of anything.

He seemed to indicate that it's not right to do such a thing in the middle of a ''process'', or ''season''. So to me, it sounds as if he's going to re-evaluate things in the summer. But he's professional enough to see this through until then.

I've got the feeling that this years summer is going to be anything other than boring.

Probably best news #saintsfc could have expected at this time. Great that MP has stayed loyal for now, but more talks need to happen with owner.

An interesting few months awaits, if no statement comes from the club shortly about the future direction, then a sale becomes more "when" than "if". Not that that would necessarily be the end of the world.

My feeling from watching the press conference is that Pochettino is staying until the summer and seeing what the club is like at that point before deciding to leave or not. He's clearly not happy.

I hope that Cortese is off finding a new investor and will return by the summer. Possibly wishful thinking, but I think Cortese got so involved with the club over the last 5 years it'll be hard for him to leave it like this in his eyes as unfinished business.

I doubt very much he will be here next season whatever happens, got a feeling Katerina won't be either! Good news though that he will see out the job he started.

not a bad manager so far but does anyone else feel his 32% win rate isn't particularly great. The high pressing game is good to watch though when it pays off

Are you aware how that 32% record in Premier League games works out in terms of points?

Played: 37

Won: 12

Drawn: 13

Lost: 12

Win Percentage 32%

That is 49 points from 37 games.

In 2012/13, 49 points would have been enough for 8th place and he'd have a game in hand.

"In recent weeks, his appearances at the training ground, often before seven in the morning, had grown less frequent. Something had changed, something was wrong."

This will in some way explain our recent drop in form and some lack lustre performances from some players, hopefully relatively normal service will be resumed

you are getting 49 points from including the games he was in charge last season though surely? I am not saying he's a bad manager far from it and definitely an more entertaining way of playing.

Mopos record as a manager has been discussed before and 32% win ratio is poor. His career record is the same and that gives him the worst win career % of all prem managers. In fact only 8 managers have a worse record accross all 4 leagues (incl james beattie btw)

However mopo staying for now is the right decision, the media would go nuts if mopo left too

We need some stability until things settle (summer)

Yes, he has earnt 49 points from his 37 Premier league games in charge of Southampton. I fail to see how that isn't good.

Yes that works mate.... We get to play WBA 3x

If only mate

If you look at Alex Ferguson's win ratio it would include over 50 league games vs Liverpool for example.

Pochettino has earnt 49 points from 37 Premier League games, that is a good record. Bizarre to look at the 32% win rate in those 37 games and dismiss it as poor.

Short term: By the end of the season he could be the 3rd longest serving PL manager. In football the end of the season could be considered the medium or even the long term.

It was said his record over a season would seed us 8th last season. Not bad really?

But you wouldnt use his win % to work out where they'd finish in the league - as you bizarrely have

If you use his win % youd have to use all managers % to make it consistant and fair. If you did that wed be bottom as mopo has the worst win % of all prem managers

Anyway lets try to keep this positive!!

Mopo is staying and that is good news

As Pochettino hasn't yet completed a full season, but is one game away from managing the club for 38 league games I don't see the problem looking at how many points he earnt in roughly one season as an indication as to how well he has done.

Mr X and yourself are saying a win ratio of 32% isn't great, but that fails to consider that the draws he gained when added to those wins actually add up to a high number of points. To be dismissive of a win ratio of 32% win ratio and not take into account how points the manager has earnt is bizarre.

- Over his entire 37 games he has enough points for roughly 8th place in a 38 game season (so a game in hand as well).

- Over 21 games this season he has enough points for a position of 9th in the current table.

That is not poor.

dunno why MLG is not point this out yet, but René Meulensteen is 31.25%

The main thing is to stop the rot of bad results we did that on Saturday against west brom, however I feel the rest of our season could hinge on the Sunderland game a battering there and confidence may be un-repairable

Meulensteen comparable record is from a much smaller sample of only 8 games compared to Pochettino being one short of 38 games.

Meulensteen in those 8 games is averaging 1.125 points per game compared with Pochettino's 1.324. Over 38 games that would be...

- Meulensteen 42.75 points

- Pochettino 50.3 points
