ART Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 Danny Higginbotham reminds us on Twitter it is 10 years to the day that Gordon Strachan left the club. The repercussions were to be immense. Was it due to Strachan leaving alone or was it the way the whole thing was handled that brought about our fall. I can only hope the lessons of the past will be remembered and taken into account so that there is not, or ever will be, a repeat.
James Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 No it wasn't due to Strachan leaving, it was due to poor managerial decisions made subsequently, unlucky results in our relegation season and injuries to key players. I'm confident the repercussions won't repeat themselves. Seriously, the CHAIRMAN has left the football club - this is being blown massively out of proportion. Yes he was important to us, but the whole idea that the club has suddenly/is about to implode is just utter nonsense that the usual trolls on here are absolutely lapping up/revelling in. kpturner Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 Have you developed a stutter? It was the poor replacements that screwed the results, which led to relegation which screwed the finances. The manager hasn't left yet - and if he gives the impression today that he does not intend to, he probably knows something about NCs plans that we don't. Will be interesting to see how things pan out.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 For me, the initial seeds were sown the summer before. A solid PL performance, cup final and a place in Europe. We sell one of our best players, and bring in mediocre at best players. No ambition shown whatsoever. Admittedly Strachan had us going well til Xmas, but once he left the squad was exposed for what it was. The string of shocking appointments didn't help much either. Not the only Saints significant event to have occured in January in last 20years 18 years ago January 1996 we finally got rid of Branfoot, and after that things improved dramatically for a couple of seasons 6 years ago Burley left to take over Scotland job, and only the appointement of Nigel Pearson saved us from relegation A year later when we got relegated from Championship Portvielt resigned in January and Wotte took over Last year around this time Cortese got rid of Nigel Adkins and despite many fans concerned the teams performances have improved significantly It does seem that we have more than our fair share of significant events occuring in January, not all bad
Lets B Avenue Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 Danny Higginbotham reminds us on Twitter it is 10 years to the day that Gordon Strachan left the club. Which is strange, as his last game in charge was away at Arsenal on 10th Feb.

Was initially going to stay until the end of that season, right?

Hoddle was set up to take over but at the last moment was declined when the board got cold feet. This was to some extent due to the vocal minority. The club made a panic appointment in the inexperienced Sturrock and we know that the long fall began.
