Player Exodus

Given the drama of all the back pages do we believe that our best players are gonna abandon ship?

I personally think Shaw will go but that would be it.

Why on earth would we allow half the team to leave and why would all the players now because of one man at the club want to leave. They didn't when NA was sacked.

Totally OTT in my humble opinion.

One would like to think players have loyalty to the club and fans rather than one short Italina business man and a non English speaking manager (if he leave)

Yes yes I know he speaks English but you catch my drift.

Its a tad OTT but it may not be pie in the sky, it all depends I suppose on how NC 'sold' the vision. Ive no doubt many would be a little saddened for his exit due to what he has done for this club in his short but sucessful tenure.

However lets not pretend this isnt a lot of exaggeration by the media that have had slow news this TW.

Plus, if the club dont want to sell they ultimately wont, plus if they pledge a continuation of the vision then I dont see why that wouldnt appease the players.

The next couple of weeks will tell us all we need to know

One thing Cortese achieved was to instill a pride and backbone to the club, ending the sickening days of us being intimidated and bullied by the big boys into flogging our best academy I products at weak prices.

He ended the era of us being the Arsenal feeder club and that was most satisfying.

I fear we now risk reverting to type or worse still, being asset-stripped. All depends on KL and her plans.

Cortese had money from the Liebherr's to resist, you could do that and so could I, you prove yourself when your hand is weak not when its strong.

If the Liebherr's are intent to sell why is Cortese going? Surely he could head up the new buyers regime or at least wait until he see their intent,I think he has walked as there is something for him elsewhere (Milan) and the intent of the Liebherr's to sell gives him the opportunity to leave.

The thing is this could start a firesale, as I said built upon sands.

A lot of it depends on the magager situation. Whilst they might fell a little shocked and ****ed off, no doubt the same as most of us, they are under contract to SFC. If Poch stays or if they are happy with whoever replaces him ans they are still getting paid well enough then they will stay, if not, they will hand in transfer requests.

Where are these rumours coming from that players want out? I've not seen anything yet I've seen it mentioned on here several times.

Just sensationalist stuff in the papers, which certain people are picking up as FACT.

As I said yesterday, the only fact is that NC has resigned. Everything else is waffle.

The whole players leaving story just makes everything look a bit more dramatic in the papers, that's all.In reality, half of our squad aren't suddenly going to leave. If Shaw wants to go to City or Chelsea it won't be the end of the world, he will go soon anyway. Can't see Lallana going, don't forget he was with the club a long time before anyone had heard of a man named Nicola Cortese. Is it not going to be more difficult now for clubs to try and sign our players, is KL dealing with transfers or someone else?

It makes it more interesting for the mainstream. A back page headline saying the chairman has left a mid-table club isn't going to make sales.

So throw in a bit of a meltdown scenario and include players + manager that general people/football fans would be aware of, and you have a sellable back-page story. Even though it's sensationalist garbage, people buy into it!

We'll know what's fact and what isn't come the summer, not based on the statements of group of forum members. The next couple of weeks will tell us a lot but I feel it's then that things could really change.

It's jolly sweet that some people on here think that the likes of Lovren and Wanyama are only here because of Cortese's "vision". In another season the pair of them would sign for QPR in the blink of an eye.

Im not naive to think thats the main motivator no, thr one great incentive is and always will be the paycheck, there will be certain players that will have possibly engaged with the vision though I dont doubt that.

As I said before, there wont be a mass exodus unless KL has no plans for the club other then making money.

If we have just spent £30 odd mill on a world class training facility why on earth would we start taking steps back? KL may know nothing about football but I bet you she knows about business and if she doesn't she has one hell of a team behind her that does, she will be well aware of the vision and "Southampton way" she has shelled out over £100 mill for various transfers /Developments I doubt she will not see this out, Lambert may be sold and Shaw but that's only because the deals being offered to us will be to good to turn down and from a business sense it is a great deal.

Reports are that NC was sorting out the RL deal to WH yesterday so even he knew it was good business sense, people assuming our players are off need to get a grip, every team in the prem is a selling club apart from City and Chelsea,if a bigger team comes in and the price is right they will be off that has always been the case, the only thing is we need to make sure we get the absolute best price for our players when that time comes

None will leave.. For starters, who are the agents gong to deal with? KL going to sit there returning their calls from the get-go? Approving sales like someone flogging the contents of their garage up at Burseldon Car Boot?

Can't see it myself, although my manc and Scouser mates have coveted Shaw for a year and I guess so have the journos..

Although I'm pretty sure they will all wait around to see what happens and which way the club goes, those saying it's ridiculous to suggest a player is at all affected by the chairman aren't quite right either.

I remember one of my first jobs, I was shown around by the boss and was really swept up by his ideas, plans and ambitions. He was a charismatic bloke who clearly knew exactly what he wanted to do. I had plenty of choices, but he was the one who swayed my decision. About four years later he left and his replacement was an utter wet blanket, trying to make decisions by committee and with no clear, strong vision at all. I saw that as the perfect time to move on and from what I heard later, I made the right decision. These things do make a difference. There is a certain belief among the players in the direction the club has been headed and we'll have to see if that momentum is maintained, or some may see it as a good time to move on while their stock is high.

I'm not sure HOW players will leave as unless fees had already been agreed we have no-one to negotiate with. In terms of Poch staying i'd also have thought KL would have given reassurances about player sales and transfer budgets

The flip side of Poch leaving and players being sold is the worst case scenario we all want to avoid. Next 10 days will be crucial

Agreed.

Exactly, and unfortunately we have no idea what the hell is in store, only speculation. Im not expecting much comment from the liebherrs, it doesnt seem there way. Perhaps the plan is for Cortese to return, personally I cant see his ego/ambition (bit of both really) keeping him away for long but also KL may have other plans.

We can only hope those plans are not of the get out quick veriety.

I think he may pop up in Milan. Wasn't their a snippet recently from an Italian journalist that he was coveted by Milan?

Player exodus? I think quite the opposite.

Without Nicola we are more attractive to top players whose agents had not been able to deal with Nicola.

He was not from a football background and tried to do things his way. I respect that, but its cost us a small fortune in wages, fees and ott transfer fees. He was obsessed with agent fees and this clouded his judgement - he was opting for 3rd and 4th choice players as there agent wanted a smaller fee.......

If the Manager or any of the players choose to leave the club on the back of Cortese's resignation it would show an enormous level of disrespect for the club and more importantly, the fans. I cannot believe that the likes of Luke Shaw, Ricky Lambert and Adam Lallana would turn their back on Saints purely on the basis of Cortese's departure.

If anyone leaves the club citing Nicola's absence as their reason, we're better off without them. I'm sure no-one with a modicum of pride in the club would be that shallow...

Glasgow, we have one of the smaller wage budgets and one of the smallest expenditures on agents fees - all despite buying pricey big name players... West ham are paying both Ravel morrison and carlton cole more than Lambert gets here, and would increase his salary by 25k just to sign for them if the rumours are to be believed....

Couple with the above strategy we have had a meteoric rise up the leagues and reached 3rd before injuries hit. If you want to swap all that for a bunch of 30 something mercenaries with higher wages and higher fees then I'm sure as hell glad you have next to zero input into the club.

Katharina has never liked Cortese. He won't be returning and we won't be spending much until the club is sold again. Source? The ex player I sit with on occasion. Darren W knows him off here.
