Cortese has left Southampton Football Club - Officially Confirmed

The whole thing smacks of either... (a) Cortese has a role lined up e.g. at AC Milan, or (b) KL wants to sell Luke Shaw and Cortese wanted to keep him here or he would leave. Or both. So perhaps we shall see the departure of Luke Shaw and possibly others such as Lallana and Schneiderlin before the end of the January window.

Unless of course, the vision for the football side of the business was not Cortese's atall, but that of Les Reid - the chap that has for some time wanted to see a special club like Saints nurture top English talent for the England team. And of course if KL wanted to sell the club, would it not be better to sell it with the best players in situ?

Perhaps there's more to this than meets the eye.

Obviously the billionaire family got where they were by building up businesses and then disposing of their most valuable assets at prices below their worth to the organisation.

To all those rounding on KL, please just realise you've heard one side of a very slick PR love in for Cortese for the last few months. I liked what he did for us and wish him well, but this doesn't have to be a game of good and bad sides.

The big issues here are:

1. Does KL continue to fund investment

2. Does MP resign in protest.

If yes to funding, and no to MP resigning it may prove storm in teacup. Although people have made snide remarks, this is where club structure with Les Reed as Director of Football really comes into its own. He has the noise and the contacts. NC did brilliant job but previously knew nothing about football

if lallana and haw were sold to united. you are looking at £40m+

If there is to be a mass exodus of players who will the agents and enquiring clubs be dealing with, surely there is no one to contact at the club until a new chairman is in place. The new chairman could be someone better than NC, we just don't know. Lets face it none of us are going to be able to alter the outcome.

Do they interview for a new guy, if so who is out there ?

I think there are a lot of fans that are hugely underestimating how good NC was for our club. Pre NC we were whipping boys who were bullied in to selling our players at huge knock down prices. He came in and has turned us in to a bloody hard working team (not just on the pitch), and we are no longer whipping boys and thanks for for grooming the next Arsenal player for millions under their worth.

The Chairman is what makes a business tick. The knock on effect of his resignation could be massive and catastrophic. Domino effect anyone? I am seriously worried for the rest of the Window and moving on.

Hello. New Chairman is K. Liebherr who will appoint Chief Exec. She could surely sanction the sale of a player tomorrow if a good enough opportunity came.

Besides, many players will be onto their agents to see what is available to them now.

Yep, I reckon the sale of an 18 year old left back will herald the demise of our 129 year old football club.

Is that what i'm saying? No. I'm saying that the loss of an influential and driven figure within the club might mean that one or two in-demand players might start to consider the offers that are coming their way from other clubs. Luke has stated several times that NC has been a big help to his development and would be gutted to see him go, and tweeted words to that effect today. Will he be more susceptible to the big money offers that'll be chucked at him from Top 4 clubs now? I think he'd give more thought to it now than he would have done previously.

If mopo goes i'd love Nigel to come back. A man who loves the club, not its boss. Still not convinced we've seen the back of NC of course. I am slightly concerned these rumours of a Chinese takeover are true... We've seen what Asian owners do to prem teams... Maybe KL wants to sell to them and Nicola is of no interest to them. Hence faking out from his point of view.

We may be shakey for a bit. But the players are in it together and the great team spirit will show through in the end.

This was not planned that is for sure, or if it was, cortese will be back in charge.

I can't go back to supporting the old dysfunctional saints, if we fall apart again I dread to imagine what it will do for my love of football. Would be a bitter pill to swallow for sure.

Why anyone didn't think SFC was for sale as soon as ML passed away is a little naive. Why should KL want to carry on with this "folly" of her father's, especially if she has no interest at all in football. I suspect that NC might have been tasked with disposing of SFC while at the same time running it in the best possible manner to increase it's value. While he has succeeded on one front, he hasn't on the other.

Don't deny that he did a good job of picking managers but really it was the Liebherr money that stopped us selling our players. And actually Lowe used to do quite a good job of negotiating prices

This, very much so.

Yes, life will go on and it's not the be all and end all... but it could be the end of becoming something special. Instead, we'll probably get an average suit happy to do the minimum required and revert to "type" as a club, selling our best players, aiming for midtable etc..

Better the devil you know and all that, change scares most people and Katrina is an unknown quantity.

If she wanted to make a statement she can either sell an asset or since it is now her name on the door buy a 30 mil player to make the noise go away.

If I was a billionaire horse wench I know I'd be spunking cash on a stallion attacking midfielder.

Whose worth 30mil in that position then ?

I don't think we will see any transfers out during the January window. It would be a great statement of intent for KL to come out & say a resounding no to any transfers out whilst we search for a new CEO. This hopefully will produce a stabilising period for us & see us through to the summer when a lot of things will become a lot clearer. For what its worth it really doesn't sound like KL is wanting to sell looking at the press release & once a new chairman is in place I'm presuming she will return to a more "back seat" role as before? I'm just glad we are only 10pts ish from safety at this stage of the season!

I can't see a multi billionaire being over impressed with bids for players she has on long term contracts, especially when it's her lawyers who will be instructed by her. I can see nothing happening in the short term until a CEO is appointed. Pochettino would be better advised to keep his powder dry until the situation clarifies itself.

Dean Richards?

Kevin Davies?

Theo?

Bale?

I guess you have only been a Saints fan for the last five years?

Exactly. For once we were making a good go of showing ambition and building. Now we will revert back to what we otherwise were. Not so fun.

Spot on Sir. We have lost a visionary leader whose plan was actually happening before our very eyes. This is a bad day, very bad and anyone who thinks it's not a big deal is very wide of the mark

It is almost a year since NA left and we went into meltdown and pages of speculation.

We couldn't understand it.

And like Karma to the skates, here we sit with a heavy dose of Deja Vu.

A lot of people in the post NA departure posts ended up looking very stupid. Same is going to happen this time.

Time to take a breath, say thankyou Nicola for the past few years of being able to hold our heads high as fans again.

And see what the coming days bring.

It's happened, we are shocked and stunned, and nothing we speculate rant or rave about is going to make a blind bit of difference other than burning a few Megabytes of Data Storage costs somewhere in the Cloud.

Good night all, let's wait and see if this is just a bad nightmare or the start of a really impossible dream

Yep. Nothing short of disastrous imo.

He had more of a feel for the football than Lowe, more business acumen that Lowe, and wasnt such an attention-seeking.

Look round the PL at the sort of trouble we could be in, in a few short weeks...

He was Lowe with money and a lesser grasp of the club's history and tradition. Thanks for getting us back to the Premiership and goodbye.

Stability and ambition are very comforting things for football fans so this a big blow. However after the initial threat of resignation from cortese it was obvious there was conflict with the owners(whose money saved this citys football club i might add). So we go again. The heartbeat of this club are the youngsters and mean we need not spend silly money trying to compete in the premier league. The policy shouldn't change supporting youth development. The satisfaction of winning a cup, title or european qualification with our kids through all the adversity over the recent years would be immense. So we go again.....i pray

There was once a dream that was Rome, you could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it would vanish. It was so fragile and I fear that it will not survive the winter.....

Illingsworth just got shot to pieces on Radio 5 for claiming chairmen don't particularly matter and turnover would barely cause a ripple in other clubs like United.

Sorry I didn't know what it meant by her being a non executive chairman, when I looked what that meant i could only find: A non executive chairman does not have any power in the company but may be the majority shareholder or a key adviser to the chairman who holds all the authority ultimately in the company concerned.

Therefore just assumed she couldn't act on her own even though she owned the club.

Oh dear a lot of players could be gone before we steady the ship!

Seriously? We got an arse fecking and Tommy Forecast for Bale.

We weren't bullied, we were skint.

Original deal was for £10m. The poster I quoted said "huge knockdown prices".

Even your "arse-fecking" was seven million quid.

If that's a "huge knockdown price" then I think you may need a little perspective.

Non execs are boardmembers who take non performance based remuneration. They are still board-members with fullpowers she is not CEO, nor is she chair of the board but considering she owns the club I doubt that matters.

I had my reservations about Cortese the man, but you can argue that he was utterly crucial to getting this club to where it is today. Now that he's gone the future direction of this great club is once again a questionable subject.

Any Saints fan tonight claiming to be not even a little worried about the future of the club is a fool.

Different school of thought. Perhaps Katarina really does care about what is HER Club and got fed up with constant stand offs with Nicola.

She has stood up to the master negotiator and won.

Perhaps things are not so bleak as everyone thinks.

Obviously disappointed he has left, and disappointed in the manner as well. He oversaw a dramatic change in fortunes and must be given much of the credit for the huge improvements across the Club.

BUT it had to come to an end at some point as with every player, manager, CEO, Chairman & even owner, things don't last forever.

This was always going to happen at some point and the Club will survive. I support the Club and always will do. Of course I hope for a great replacement and a continuation of the good times Cortese brought back to the Club, so fingers crossed the short term pain will soon be gone.

(PS If some players or the manager use this as an excuse to leave, then fook em, they're not for to wear the shirt).
