When Markus died it was just Cortese for some time, until the family affairs were put in order. One assumption may be that the discussions in the summer were for the family to have more control, and to re-assert something like the original formation, and Cortese wasn't amenable to that. I can see that they may have wanted extra control for some time, and a hell of a game has been playing in the background for a while now. That we're just finding out about it muddies the water a bit. I see it as Cortese not wanting to have any shackles imposed on him and has walked as he won't have the autonomy he has enjoyed in the past year or two. I could be wrong but that seems a fairly likely scenario to me. A shame if so, but any organisation that is happy to have one man calling all the shots is a worrying trait. If their intentions are not long(ish) term, they might not. They let Cortese have a free reign post Marcus, rightly or wrongly, Cortese seems to have created a machine which breaks when he isn't running it. Would make sense that they would want more control when we are at the hight of our value , Cortese wanted to continue to the "next level" it seems. The owners are quite right to judge that the amount of money it would take to get into the Champions League is unlikely to result in similar levels of revenue or increase value of the club. It's very hard to turn a profit at that level with the likes of Chelsea and Man C around. Getting into the Premier League is basically the point at which their return on investment peaked and it is time to sell. Probably Cortese knew the money was drying up and handed in his notice in advance of the window to try and pressure the Leibherr's into opening the purse strings. Of course, he timed the end of his notice for the transfer window itself, the point at which he would know if there was any hope of getting more money. Following meetings, it became clear that no transfers would be occurring, so he walked. Edited 15 January, 2014 by Ex Lion Tamer

How the £3bn heiress who's never shown any interest in football has ousted the man who made Saints fans believe again This week's events have been bubbling since last summer, when Katharina arrived unexpectedly at the club's pre-season training camp in the stunning Alpine setting of Velden, Austria. It was on the banks of Lake Worthersee, on the decking of the Seespitz Restaurant on the evening of Wednesday, July 24, that she made her first serious demands to be involved in the day-to-day running of the club. Until that moment Cortese had held her at arm's length as he went about the business of establishing Southampton as a force again in the Barclays Premier League. Wes Tender Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 I've been away from this forum since early this morning, so when I last read it there were just rumours about Cortese going that could be dismissed as paper talk. What a shock to read the official announcement that he has actually gone. But then again, it was also a massive shock to read that Adkins had gone last season and in the cold light of day after the numbness had eased, his replacement hasn't done too shabbily. Who is to say that we are not now entering another period of evolution which won't improve us further? It is natural that such events as these will trigger all sorts of conjecture about the implications for our future and speculation about the motives of the two main protagonists, Cortese and Katherina Liebherr, but until there is something concrete in the form of a statement by either party as to their reasons for this eventuality, it is useless making predictions as to what the future holds for us. The press are having a field day suggesting that all of our best players will be off to glory clubs and some bedwetters on here are wringing their hands predicting a China Syndrome type meltdown. People need to get a grip of themselves and exercise some patience until things become clearer. Within the next few days it will probably emerge whether Pochettino will wish to leave, whether any of the players might wish to go. But I suspect that the players are a fairly tightly knit group and the wiser heads among them will advise their colleagues to sit tight and wait for events to unfold further before making any rash decisions. It has been suggested that some of them were tempted to come here or remain here because of the "project", the ambitious aim to be in Champions League football within a certain timespan. Who is to say that the project dies with the departure of Cortese? Why shouldn't others who might be appointed in his place not be similarly ambitious on the instructions of Miss Liebherr? Tomorrow's another day; let's see what it brings in the way of clarification from sources that are more reliable than those which are currently sending the more excitable on here into a tizz. DuncanRG Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 Some fascinating detail in that article, which is new to me: -Katharina unexpectedly visited the Austrian training camp in preseason and may have (if my Neil Ashton translator is working) had talks with Cortese about re-assigning some of his power -Cortese discovered Pochettino on a scouting mission to Espanyol for a player two years ago -Cortese's son is an 'academy recruit'?! -'Soon there will be a hotel for the players to stay in when they return from long away trips to avoid disturbing their families at 3am in the morning when they return home." -"On Wednesday morning many of the players were openly threatening to walk away from the club when they realised Cortese was about to quit." Wiggles31 Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 Surely if he handed in his notice in October which some papers have suggested then there would be a contingency plan in place rather to avoid crisis. SaintRobbie Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 I find all this rather fascinating. Cortese doesn't kick a ball. As long as MP says he's staying tomorrow I am fairly chilled out. It's his team. We are a top half Premiership team kicking onwards and upwards. We should be able to attract the best Chief Exec in the land. Loved his ambition and ruthlessness to succeed but a few weeks ago he insinuated MP would be sacked if he didn't deliver. Sorry but Cortese got lucky because he found MP. If he stays so do our players and so do we. Bugger all to do with Cortese on the pitch. Thank you NC for finding MP, but good bye. Frankly, I don't care. Professor Posted 16 January, 2014 Share Posted 16 January, 2014 The instability of the set-up since Marcus bought the club has been an issue that has been overshadowed by success on the field. Having the club run by a single individual who was an employee without a personal financial investment in the business has been an accident waiting to happen. Sooner or later the owner was bound to want a say in how the club was run, if not personally, then through a board of directors. The private ownership of what used to be English football clubs is becoming a worrying issue but until it happens to your own club it's easy to turn a blind eye. Keeping the manager is now the most important thing so that there is some stability for the remainder of the season. It seems Cortese knew that was essential and he may have achieved that before he left the building but as fans we can only watch the developments. Our club, which we have supported for over 125 years is now just a commodity but if the owner, whoever it is, doesn't act responsibly, we don't have to turn up for matches and I'm sure Katerina knows that as well as anyone else.
