Cortese to go?

Bewildered

Some people are getting slightly confuse over bookies odds. Yes they raise and lower the odds based on what they think is the most likely occurance. They ALSO lower the odds based on how much money is being put on an out come e.g the more that you guys are betting on poch leaving the lower the odds get , so you think its more likely to happen so bet more / others see the odds dropping and want a piece before it gets any lower, thus creating a spiral downward of the odds. I appreciate the amoount thats being placed on by people on here is unlikely to affect the odds that much but its worth bearing in mind that the betting companys are just working from algorithims and hunches

How about:

NC told to sell Shaw for £30M; NC says no, if he goes that's it for me - and to underline this, here's my resignation letter.

Unfounded speculation, but might fit.

Thats more realistic a thoery we have had today. Are we a selling club? Sell a key player in the line up and approach to game plans and it leaves Saints with a problem and suddenly no higher than 9th and only down the table. Hold on we have had this before

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/southampton/10573962/Cortese-resigning-Pochettinos-future-in-doubt.-Southampton-fans-must-be-asking-What-is-going-on.html

The level of mystery and intrigue probably still does not quite match Ali al-Faraj - or Al-Mirage as some Portsmouth fans called their former owner - but it is not so very far behind. At least there was a grainy photograph out there of Al-Faraj. Katharina Liebherr, now the owner of Southampton, could walk down any High Street in Hampshire and be certain of going unrecognised. There is not one single picture of her in the public domain, she seldom attends matches and yet it is Liebherr - and not chairman Nicola Cortese - who owns and has the ultimate control of Southampton.

The underlying problem is that her relationship with Cortese has been, at best, distant and, at worst, non existent. That was not such an issue in the immediate aftermath of Katharina becoming Southampton owner following the death of her father, Markus, in August 2010.

Cortese, an Italian banker, had been Markus' appointment and he was allowed to continue running the day-to-day operations of the club as he saw fit. The Liebherr family must have seen no real reason to interfere as Southampton went from strength to strength and climbed from the bottom of League One to the riches of the Premier League. An investment that had cost an initial £14 million when the club had been plunged into administration in 2009 is now worth something in the region of £100 million.

Cortese has not put any of his own money into the club. In those terms, it could be argued that he is simply another dispensable employee. It would be misguided, though, to underestimate his vast influence on just about every single decision that is taken inside the club, no matter how small or unpopular.

Cortese's departure would leave a massive leadership void. As well as the Pochettino situation, it would also create doubt over the future of many players and it is clear that rival clubs may now seize on this moment of uncertainty in an attempt to prise the best assets away from St Mary's.

Without Cortese answering the phone, there is no telling how Southampton might react to bids for Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Morgan Schneiderlin, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne or Calum Chambers.

Even if Pochettino stays, would a new chairman be as strong in resisting a potential offer from, say, Tottenham Hotspur?

Pochettino took training as usual at the club's Marchwood training base but there has been no sense that his attitude towards the Cortese question has changed since last May. He is due to hold his weekly press conference on Thursday.

The fundamental questions, however, must now be directed towards the Liebherrs. Are they really still committed to keeping the club and what sort of future do they envisage?

It is now time for someone from the Liebherr family to step from the shadows and shed some light on their outlook

Well our record transfer is Osvaldo, who was about £13m....so he wasn't either.

The point I was making was that the last couple of season we have been competing for a different pool of players than the likes of Fulham and Cardiff simply because we were able to offer higher fees and wages. That's why we gazumped cardiff for Wanyama, not because of a presentation.

Personally, I think this is being blown out of proportion slightly on all sides. Cortese has been great for us and has propelled us on a Journey we could have all wished for, however, he has had substitutional money to make that happen. It's naive to think that MP, Shaw, Osvaldo, Gaston, Lallana etc are here because of NC. They're here because we've been able to pay them a decent amount of $$$. As cold as that sounds, it's the truth in this day and age.

The only doubt that NC leaving would bring upon us would be the drive and finance to keep those players, but if a financial backer is found who is willing to take this club on...then I see no reason why this journey ends here.

It looks to me as if we've emptied the pot of cash for improvements and transfers, so we're going back to the family for more and more commitments. They're within their right to question it, as at the end of the day this is their fathers investment - not theirs. And I don't think they've ever been massively committed with the same drive as NC.

I think we'll be sold in the not-too-distant future, so get ready for next season being a bit of a roller-coaster. However, what's been put in place here over the last 5 years is too strong to be taken apart by 1 person leaving. He will leave a legacy whatever happens, and it's up to someone else to move that on.

Wise words for one so young ;)

Interesting that the gripe isnt about money- kind of re-assuring.

My feeling is that this will be resolved (when Cortese gets his way)

Funny, I thought exactly the same.

I must commend NC for his commitment but all this threatening to leave stuff if he does not get his own way is very childish and the second time he has done this.

Dont get me wrong, I back him, but are we going to see this tactic again and again if he does leave and do we all agree with it?

I see no reason to change what I posted in May, when he last threatened to resign...

Since the purchase of the club by the Liebherr's, Cortese has run the club as his personal fiefdom. His attitude towards many of those involved with the club and others outside, with whom he disagrees, has all the hallmarks you would expect from a short Italian given too much power. The main problem, is that most chairman with his attitude, actually have the money to ruffle the feathers that give him the added stature he craves.

The club has been successful on the pitch due in large part to the managers, players and playing staff. The business has been financially successful due to the strict control over costs and the massive increase in non-matchday income from Sky, due to the success on the pitch.

The owners will be making a big mistake to cave in to an employee who increasingly confuses the role of a Chairman with that of a Dictator. I think they only have two choices:

  1. Sell the club to new owners who will understand that with investment, there are many financially trained Chairman who can do Cortese's job, without the ongoing damage to the club's reputation.
  2. Get rid of Cortese and back a new Chairman, with the investment the club requires to meet any ambitions they have.

The poll above (should Cortese stay or go) provides pretty much the same result as when Adkins was fired. It only serves, as does the Pompey Takeover Thread, how detached from reality you become, when you spend too much time on internet forums.

Whoever they get in, I will still turn up, like most other fans. My loyalty is to the team. I am just dreaming of Wenger taking over as Chairman and the Liebherr's financing a new stadium....

Is Katharina in this photo? (supposedly of the Liebherrs)

No. Nor is she in any of the other photos posted on this thread so far. I will not confirm yes/no to any further photos posted either. I have met her, Markus' widow and some of the family on a number of occasions and they really do want anonymity.
