PS4 or XBOX One

See you in a couple of hours then (InFamous looks great but narrow story by some accounts I've read).

I'm enjoying the story well enough but bought it for the gameplay.

Think 8/10 is about right. It's a gorgeous looking game. It's structurally very similar to the previous two, but has got a lighter tone.

I'd expect any PS4 title released at the moment to hit the top of the charts at the moment.

Undoubtedly there are more PS4's in play but also (significantly) because there are less titles available than for Xbox One.

If I were a PS4 owner I'd see that as the biggest threat from Xbox - Sony don't seem to have the same exclusive title machine as MS, at least for the first 12 months.

I don't think that'll worry any PS4 owner. If the exclusives are good enough, then many will just buy an XBox One. In the meantime, they've got the benefit the vast majority of multi-plat titles performing better on their machines.

I have to confess that I'm quite intrigued by a few of the exclusives. Fable Legends will be key for me. Last one dropped quality a little, and Molyneux is no longer heading up Lionhead, so we'll see.

MGS: Ground Zeroes has been confirmed as 90 minutes long. I think if you pay 40 quid on either platform you're foolish, no matter the resolution.

Got the MGS game tonight for 25KUP, which is a fair enough price. Gorgeous game. Probably got a measure of sympathy with the price, even at 25UKP. Still, it's nothing new. Back in the PS2 days, most sales of Zone of the Enders were driven by the MGS2 demo, just as many sales of Crackdown were made with the Halo beta in mind. This at least seems honest.

The PS4 version has outsold Titanfall on XBox One for the last two weeks. That might just be the low price kicking in, except inFamous: Second Son, a full pricer and PS4 exclusive, has had top spot throughout.

Impressive how anyone can know sales figure when no sales figures have been released. Are you getting numbers from the Jackanory site vgchartz again?

The site where they have to correct all their numbers when publishers produce actual numbers.

You stated the PS4 version of MGS: GZ has outsold Titanfall. MCV are reproducing an ALL FORMAT chart.

So accumulation of MGS:GZ on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 AND PS3 outsold Titanfall on Xbox One and PC by 100 copies....

Week 1

Week 2.

Titanfall crawled underneath inFamous' arse, so my bad on the outsold for 2 weeks claim.

No other XBone game in the top ten.

In short the XBox one is a weaker crapper games machine with fewer licenses and will go continue to be in the shadow of Sony, PS+ has hammered it home.

It's a weaker machine. It has more exclusives (i.e. not coming out for PS4) than the other way around, but sales wise, they've already lost to Sony. They'll spend the rest of the generation throwing good money after bad securing more exclusives.

Ps plus is fantastic for Microsoft.

There's actually no need for PlayStation gamers to buy games any more. And last I heard, developers prefer people to pay for their games.

Aw, check out the Microsoft Gold subscriber here. All bummed out because Games For Gold has now been "hammered" by PS Plus.

Y'see, Microsoft have got their own "free games" program. The problem is, it's shít, and doesn't offer any XBox One games as part of the deal. Microsoft will be fixing that soon. As Barry says, the PS Plus is a super deal for consumers.

On Nolan's points that he's just pulled from his arse:-

1) Developers get paid for PSN releases regardless. Sony haven't got them locked in a room breaking a finger at a time until they relent.

2) If no-one needs to buy PS4 games anymore, how comes PS4 games are top of the sales charts?

:)

Because at he moment there is a dire shortage of PS4 games?

Comparison attach rates show Playatation owners don't buy as many games.

PS3 owners don't even have the time to pay all the games releases on PS plus. Unless you're a AAA release you're not going to get sales.

And I know people who work in the games industry (more than a few got laid off in Sony studios mass UK culling last week. And the UK just got tax breaks).

You want good games you have to pay for them. And developers will be going where the people who PAY for games are.

XBOX One

Want to back that up with figures?

The new XBox chief simply talks of a "great attach rate" in this article entitled Microsoft : PlayStation has not won (lolz).

http://spong.com/article/31647/Microsoft-PlayStation-Has-Not-Won

Anyway, you seem to be missing the point that attach rate is number of games sold per console.

PS3 owners don't even have the time to pay all the games releases on PS plus.

Meaning they're getting more value than they can handle?

Why are you making out like that's a bad thing? Why invoke the PS3 in a PS4 vs XBox argument.

As it goes, my PS3 is now in Juvenile Unit #2's bedroom. She gets free games every month.

Amazed that you'd try to list this as a negative :)

Unless you're a AAA release you're not going to get sales.

And yet, MGS : Ground Zeroes, a glorified demo, beat out Titanfall first week of its release.

Minecraft, a Java-based lego game with almost no production gloss, is one of the most popular games in the world. It's creator is a multi-millionaire off the back of the sales.

You want good games you have to pay for them.

Yeah, you do, and you still do on PS Plus. It's just covered in your subscription and paid out of that.

It's a brilliant service for consumers. I think on this point more than any other, you've put the nail in the coffin of the XBox One.

Good job, mate.

It's a good game, but it's one to dip in and out of. Treat it more as an arcade game that you'll have a blast on every now and then. It's not something I personally can play for hours on end.

Yeah I've been playing it in 2-3 hours sessions and I don't think it's suited to it.

Played about 6 hours now, still hasn't grabbed me I have to say, it is definitely fun but I just don't find it has that intensity and tension to it that CoD has for me.

Hmm.

While this isn't the end of the world for XBox One owners, Amazing Spiderman 2 has been "indefinitely postponed" for the platform.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-04-17-activision-indefinitely-postpones-xbox-one-version-of-the-amazing-spider-man-2

Didn't expect this to happen quite so quickly.

You didn't expect some developers not to show they do not have the skills to develop for Xbox One so quickly?

from that article

"We are working with Microsoft in an effort to release The Amazing Spider-Man 2 video game on Xbox One,"

you never know Beenox might be able to get their hands on DX12 early and really do the game justice, with the help of Microsoft.

We'll see.

Microsoft have a release parity policy that usually means that multi-platform games have to be released on XBox at the same time (or earlier) than versions for competing platforms. Can't see Activision holding back the game on every other platform just for MS (they learned from Titanfall :D), so Microsoft will either have to go back on their policy or do to Activision what they threaten smaller developers with. Can't see them chancing it.

Found out that this isn't even the first game; Tropico 5 is coming to PS4, PS3 and 360, but no XBox One version as yet (it is being considered).

http://gamingbolt.com/kalypso-focusing-on-tropico-5-for-xbox-360-xbox-one-version-to-be-considered

http://www.tropico5.com/us/

Interestingly, they made their call in January of this year. These are commercial decisions; there are now seven million PS4 owners out there. Companies are evidently deciding that they can make enough money on other platforms, or see the One as a commercial risk. There's clearly no contractual problem with Microsoft - both games are coming out for 360.

For those still looking to get a One, this outlet is now banging them out at £329.00 with FIFA.

Found at Eurogamer.

Serious question to One owners; are ye miffed that you've effectively paid more than £100 than people picking up the machine now?

No, why would we be. All technology reduces in price over time.

8500 achievements score on Xbox One games so far, so I'm alright cheers.

It's a hundred quid you could have spent on games or putting toward your inevitable PS4 :)

This is an excellent comparison for anyone still looking to buy new hardware.

http://www.trustedreviews.com/opinions/xbox-one-vs-sony-ps4

There's no particular 'wrong choice' to be made between the two consoles at present. However, the PS4 seems to be the gamer's choice. Its PlayStation Plus service is great, it's significantly more powerful and we think the controller is a bit better. If you want to save some money, though, you can get far better deals for the Xbox One at this point.

I did very much enjoy the top 5 reasons to get an XBox One though, even if none of them actually convinced me.

Microsoft to release a Kinect-less XBox One this June.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-05-13-xbox-one-without-kinect-levels-the-playing-field-with-ps4

I reckon HDMI-in in might be next to go. Aren't most of the TV functions really integrated with Kinect?

Anyway, another huge u-turn for Microsoft, in a time when all they are willing to report are the number of XBox One's they've shipped to retailers. Sony just publishes its "sold through" stats.

Over by Christmas?

It's nice to see Microsoft are willing to cater for other people.. You woouldnt want them to become a heavily loss making company along the lines of blackberry or Sony.

I have to say though. Fair play to Sonys bosses for taking heavy pay cuts for doing so badly.

I don't need to. It's merits are obvious in games like Titanfall and Sunset Overdrive.

Its shortcomings are obvious in games like Titanfall. You haven't played Sunset Overdrive yet.

This is the state of XBox One fandom. Picking games that are either better on other platforms or, amazingly, not even out yet.

btw; the writing is pretty much on the wall on this one. I won't hold my breath waiting for all the people who called performance differences "marginal" to show some class.

Are you two still at it?

Differences are marginal to the masses, that said the PR machine and unpaid representatives with a penchant for freeze frame analysis have done a good job on making them an issue.

Microsoft's biggest issue has been price. By coming in at a higher price and the perception of inferiority they've come second.

I say perception because there are features that the Xbox has that PS4 doesn't (integrated media / HDMI, Kinect etc), but the PR momentum is focused on graphics.

My experience is that the Xbox One is stellar. It's at the centre of our home entertainment, voice control works a treat, controller free use and (even without the one guide which should banish the Virgin remote) the experience is great. I play games and my son does too, but that's outweighed by TV / Netflix etc.

That said for bedroom use where (a) space is smaller, (b) less likely to make use of HDMI/Kinect. then the PS4 is an obvious choice(ironic really given the graphics performance will be less obvious on most bedroom TVs)

I suspect the demographic to whom the PS4 appeals most to are adolescents in their bedroom. They or their parents are going to be more price sensitive due to its niche use. My hypothesis is probably supported by that article comparing porn accessed on PS4 vs. Xbox.

Microsoft have made their bed on price and lost the race. It remains to be seen if the long term entertainment hub takes off and can catch them up any. I, for one, hope it does because it really works well for us and I'd hate for it to be marginalized.

Word of mouth is a powerful thing. There is now a widespread public perception that the XBox One is less powerful and less desirable than the PS4. I think that, rather than price, is the real issue. The price has already dropped a few times, going as low as £329, undercutting the PS4 by £20.

As many on Eurogamer have said, the removal of Kinect isn't really a price cut - it's the new price for a different package. Something to keep off the bill of materials. It actually makes the machine a more attractive proposition for me; I was never comfortable with an always-on camera spying on my living room. However, it must be somewhat annoying for those that have bought into Kinect. This part of the XBox One ecosystem will at best be placed into maintenance mode. Developers will be less enthused about writing software for something that'll only work on a subset of the target hardware.

I don't get the camera paranoia, presumably you carry a smart phone around with you which isn't much different and ever present.

I think the maintenance mode is over egging it for Kinect, voice is at the heart of the control so that element isn't going away. Motion gaming may get hit but that's always been a bit meh to me.

Personally I think the Kinect is at the heart of many of the things that differentiate the Xbox from the PS4 (voice, IR, auto sign in etc.). At the same price point / same features, the perception on performance kicks in.

It will be interesting if they bundle games at the reduced price.

Hey guys, I'm now in the market for a new console, can anyone who has both tell me which one you prefer and why?

Leaning towards PS4 as I've had PS1,2&3 before. Unfortunately I dropped my ps3 (original - lasted really well and no problems bar the fact I filled it up so had to delete old games when I got new ones) and broke it when I was moving this week and so thought I might as well get a new console. Fairly set on a ps4 due to exclusives (Uncharted) but open to defecting if it's worth it

Thanks in advance for help/advice

Well, you could read this thread - thats what it is about. But if you dont have time I could summarise: Pap believes* that the PS4 is utterly the dogs bollix. Further, Pap believes* that the Xbox One is not in the same league and cites lots of technical and other deficiencies. Lots of people who actually own the Xbox say that they either dont experience these deficiencies, or dont notice them and they are very pleased with the Xbox. Hope that helps

*"believes" may just be understating it a little bit. sorry

I'm still using my 360, would you say the 'advances' in technology in either the PS4 or Xbox one warrant the £350 it costs to upgrade. I'm toying with the idea but genuinely dont believe, from what I've seen, they are that much better then either the PS3 or 360.

Six months down the line & my PS4 is still inferior to my PS3!

really - we love ours, just wish there were more titles, but then most formats start slow. I've found it far better to navigate around and we watch amazon TV on it daily as well as iPlayer - far better than apple TV.

Looking forward to plants vs zombies garden warfare - enjoyed it on xbox as couldn't get it anywhere else but not paying for 'gold' so in a couple of weeks we'll be plain that - only gutting thing is that ESO was postponed
