scorchio21 Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Wow, i don't know where to start with that one. One of the bizarrest games I've been to in recent memory. There's often a lot of debate about whether £20 is the right price for the ticket but I at least feel I got my money's worth here. It was entertaining stuff, albeit painful to watch at times. Davis 4 - not really at fault for their first goal, but his old near post nightmares returned for the second. Need to rewatch the third as it was a weird one as it slowly looped into the net after the corner, but he certainly wasn't commanding his area. To be fair he made an excellent point blank save right after they equalised. Distribution a lot worse than recently too. Shaw 6 - got forward reasonably well but seems to be afraid to take on defenders. Got caught out defensively a few times too, not great. Hooiveld 3 - alright for the first half when Burnley hardly threatened, but pretty horrendous in the second. So incredibly slow for their second goal. Yoshida 4 - kept giving the ball away, generally looked uncomfortable and not up to the task. Clyne 7 - scored an absolute screamer, and looked lively going forward. Generally ok defensively but by the end everything was such a shambles that even he was making errors. Schneiderlin 6 - some decent ball-winning and passing but also gave the ball away a few times. Cork 5 - great for the first half hour, pretty awful after that. Misplaced passes and getting caught in possession, not as up for 50/50s as usual. Davis 5 - anonymous, I remember him losing the ball a couple of times but don't recall much other than that. Ramirez 4 - poor, had 2 longshots one of which was pathetically weak and the other went miles off target, then failed to shoot when relatively close to the goal. He went off immediately after the 2nd Burnley goal, leaving us down to 10 men until lallana came on for him about 2 minutes later, anyone know what that was about? Lambert 6 - took his goal really well, other than that not great. Had another great chance that he ballooned way over the bar. Looked out on his feet after half an hour. Rodriguez 6 - similar to Rickie, took his goal well but did little else right. Had plenty of opportunities after his goal but failed to hit the target. Lallana 8 - shone out way above the rest. Fantastic goal after collecting the ball when very little seemed to be on, also set Rodriguez through with a sublime pass and came up with various other moments of magic. Fonte 5 - error prone, looked lethargic, hardly even an improvement over Hooiveld.
Ohio Saint Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 I couldn't see the match, or even get radio for it. Based on the result alone, it was a good win against a top championship side. Lots of FA cup drama, the right result for us and loads of respect to Burnley for their comebacks. It must have really hurt their fans to see Jay turn the game against them, if only for a while. Leicestersaint Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Scoring 4 - good; conceding 3 - bad. We have really lost the tight defence and slick passing that we had up to the Arsenal game - hopefully we have now been through our bad spell and will get back on track. I still think we can finish in the top six and have a good Cup run but we need to buck our ideas up to do this.

doddisalegend Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Well I really enjoyed that 20 quid well spent. I thought the atmosphere was quite good considering the low crowd numbers good banter between the Kingsland north and the Burnley fans. A good example of a cup game IMO. We need better back up at CB ASAP Laurel and Hardy at the back were truly shocking. Gaston needs to take a hike truly dire...why people think he is the answer to our attacking problems I really don't know we looked a hundred times better when Adam came on. Lambert pulled up quite early in the game carried on for a while (even scored) but you could tell he was struggling. Kelvin pulled off a couple of good saves but then made a couple of howlers better than Gazza but we need Boruc back. Clyne MOM for me best player on the pitch first half and scored a absolute beauty of a goal to.

SaintSteve Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Davis 4 Clyne 8-sorry but he's better than chambers. Yoshida 4 Hooiveld 2- terrible Shaw 4-worst I've seen from him. Morgan 5-doesn't cover like he used to. Cork 6 Gaston 6-tried hard couple of moments. Davis 6 Rickie 7-he's class. Jwp 5-poor. Subs-j rod 6-mixed bag. Lallana 8-class above turned game, so impressed Lallana completely turned game in our favour. But he isn't is he... they are different players and Chambers is also going to be top class; maybe not at RB.

Sad considering his consistent pinpoint crosses earlier in the season.

Cabrone Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Never mind the performance, feel the result. This was a real banana skin of a game against very decent opposition and we came through. Through to the 4th round and another 3 weeks closer to Boruc getting back, boy do we miss him. If we can stay in the cup whilst nursing our first 11 back together then I don't see why we can't get something from this competition.

saintsmike25 Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Player ratings. Kelvin Davies: 6 - Made some crucial saves when they had the asendency, however the third and second goals could have been avoided, especially the third. Still he was a mark better than Gazz. Nathaniel Clyne: 8 Did well on his side, fantastic goals and was generally first to most things, great to have him back and available. Jos - 3, I'm being kind here, he was at fault for the second goal and got caught out constantly, he lets his man go and his positioning these days is terrible. We need a more mobile defender. Yoshida, 5: A bit better than Jos, but still he was nervous and his passing was so bad today, fortunately his covering Jos's mistakes saved us on a few occasions. Shaw: 6, Seen him play better, he seemed a bit reluctant today, some flashes the Luke Shaw we know and love, but when you have Jos and Yoshida together it meant he didn't push up as far due to the long ball threat. He got down the left well on occasion Morgan: 6 An average game by his standards, he's not in great form, and he seems to have lost that zip, but he was in and around the game, but he's lost that spark to get forward and be an all action midfielder. Cork: 6.5 - 7, had a better game than Morgan and made some important tackles and interceptions. James Ward Prowse: 5, Meh didn't really seem in the game, good player but far too safety first at times. Davies - 5, Not in the game a bit of a passenger. Ramirez - 7. He played well and was one of our most lively players, he was chasing down, won a few headers one of which was a lovely knockdown, he put in some lovely crosses into the box too, he was actually far sharper than I've seen him, he was our most forward thinking player, shame his two shots were awful but he played well, but tired himself out and should have taken himself off properly, rather than walk off. He put in far more effort today than I've seen for a while, he had a lovely chipped effort clawed away too. Lambert - 7.5, very good when he was on, linked up well but his leg went dead and unfortunately had to go off. Subs: Lallana - 8, Superb, did everything well and changed the game. Jay Rod - 8 All action display from Jay Rod against his former team, he was a constant thorn in there side and took his goal well, should have scored a sitter at the end to make it 5. Fonte - Had very little to do to judge him on.
Pedro Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 MP seemed so disinterested in this game, slouched back in his seat for most of the game, Perez doing all the interviews. His body language for the past couple of games appeared muted. Strange game really, looked to be cruising at 2 up and then our defence went to pieces, Jos ought to be on his bike, a liability. Best moment was the Clyne goal, hope he carries that on to the league.
CHAPEL END CHARLIE Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Exciting to see so many goals scored of course, but that headline may disguise the fact that this game was pretty ordinary for much of the time. Never mind, the main thing is we won and at just £20 (£5 for the kids) that was still fair value for money in my book. Clyne's goal was a proper thumper by the way - worth the ticket price all on its own. As for Jos Hooiveld ... well he has served this club well enough in the past I suppose, but this season the man is fast becoming a liability I'm sorry to say. On a personal note at long last - after 3 seasons of mistiming and disappointment - a certain 7 year old boy of my acquaintance finally got to see his hero, Sir Rickie Lambert of this Manor, score a bloody goal. Thank god for that I say.

Griffo Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Can't say that wasn't value for money today. spyinthesky Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 My view fwiw Thought we totally dominated the first half. Burnley had a sniff although they wasted a good free kick position close half time. If SRL had converted a half decent chance then we would deservedly been 3-0 up at the break Second half Burnley were more into it and scored from their first real attempt. Jos then got skinned (from a ball he should have won) for the second and only a couple of very good KD saves plus the woodwork prevented us going behind The introduction of Lallana for Ramirez (another extremely frustrating performance - some good/often bad) made us stronger and we scored a relatively fortuitous third before Lallana fashioned a beauty before we conceded a another sloppy goal Overall our passing was at a much higher tempo and success rate than theirs but our central defensive partnership was poor otherwise we could have won comfortably Just as well MP played a relatively strong side The side who played against Bristol City in the League Cup (relatively strong on paper) would have lost today
Huffton Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Thought it was an enjoyable game, good value for money. In all fairness Saints didn't rally get out of second gear, and didn't need to. We happily kept them at arms length ans seemed content to let them chase around and wear themselves out early on, then hit them with two quick goals which really should have finished the game. Would have been interesting if they then took the lead but Davis pulled off a worldy. Then went and grabbed another couple of goals to put it to bed, let them get a sneaky one back but we never looked out of control. The main points for me were: Kelvin, not his best day at the office but made up for it with a couple of decent stops, and one worldy Jos, awful Yoshida, not much better Gaston, don't know what to say. Clearly a huge talent but just doesn't seem to fit in with our style. Think we should cash in now and re-invest.
Saint_Tony Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Strange game, but an entertaining one that could easily have gone the other way. After a poor first 10 minutes we took control, scored 2 great goals and it looked all over. Worrying to see Rickie go off, he pulled up after 10 mins and never looked right after. Burnley came back into it 2nd half and had us rattled Hooiveld and Yoshida are nowhere near good enough. Yoshida is the worse of the two IMO, doesn't ever look comfortable in any situation, as least Jos can win a few headers. Davis made a great save when it was 2-2, and again at 3-2. If Gazza was in goal we would have certainly lost. Scrappy third goal, but when Lallana came on he ran the game, a cut above every player on the pitch. Another thing, JWP should not be playing out on the right, he was very poor, including his crossing. I think we should stop pretending hes in the same class bracket as some of our other players. He's not good enough for the first team. Anyway, an interesting game and most importantly we go into the hat for the next round

Gaston was decent - provided the real incision in the first half and was always wanting the ball. Less effective second half. On his walking off: Lallana was already and prepped to come on for him, Gaston wandered over to the technical area, and just kept going.....guess he thought the substitution was happening, but it was a couple of minutes until there was a break in play. Our defence was ****, and there was little cohesion to our pressing. Won though, so won't complain too much.

John Boy Saint Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 I can't believe the Bellends giving Ramirez a performance score in the posts you really need to take a chuffin big look in the mirror at yourselves!! Aside from being bloody hopeless (yes worse than Jos): THE FACT HE WALKED OFF THE PITCH AND STRAIGHT DOWN THE TUNNEL WHILST WE WERE STILL PLAYING!! LEAVING US WITH 10 MEN ON THE PITCH, BEFORE THE GAME STOPPED AND THE BOARD WAS SHOWN REPLACING HIM WITH ADAM, THAT IS UNFORGIVABLE AND THE ONLY SCORE WORTHY OF GIVING HIM IS A BLOODY GOOD KICK UP THE BACKSIDE. Just get shot of him: as useful as a one legged man in an aR$e kicking competition applies. Apart from that quite an enjoyable game Burnley are no mugs and big Sean obviously told them to have a proper go second half which made it entertaining. Nathaniel certainly lit the blue touch paper with his goal.
saintsmike25 Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 I don't know how it happened tbh. I was judging Ramirez solely in his performance in the game. I think he did well, so did he not help set up the second goal for Lambert? Put in a few superb balls into the box? Set up some fairly good chances, chase down more than he has in weeks? You can't compare Ramirez's performance to the joke that is Jos.

derry Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Ramirez was holding his hamstring and pointing to it as he went off. Lambert went down in a collision and appeared to over extend a knee. Davis beaten at near post again, full backs ok but need better midfield cover when committed up front. JWP and Davis were poor in all phases. Cork had a good all round game. Schneiderlin was adequate today, a little better than Wednesday but nowhere near his early season performances. Ramirez is building fitness and whilst he did some good things he should improve considerably with regular starts. Hooiveld was poor not sharp enough and is so left sided he keeps getting wrong sided. Yoshida was better but it must be difficult playing alongside Hooiveld. Rodriguez is no lone front runner, he isn't as available or as capable of holding the ball up as Lambert, much more a support striker. Took his goal well, should have had a couple more but worked hard and had a decent game. Lallana good without breaking sweat, great improvement with his left foot this season, he's obviously worked on it, very good goal. Although Burnley pulled themselves back into the game we always looked in charge. Boruc and Wanyama are needed back, plus another Premier goalkeeper, a regular goalscorer and a top class partner for Lovren
BlakeySFC Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 A decent win. We made it hard for ourselves, but in the end we got a much deserved victory, onto the 4th Round we go!
lickierambert Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 1st half a training exercise 2nd half a defensive shambles. We won! 4 good goals in the game, thankfully we scored 3 of them. Burnley win the award for the 'chunkiest' team we've played this year-a lot of junk in the trunk The woman screaming 'get it forward!' in a shrill tone every minute behind me-shut the f**k up you ignorant cow-have you not watched any professional football, ever? derry Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Davis passed the ball square to Lambert who hit a long range bullet into the top of the net. To call it an assist would be laughable.
offix Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Our defence needs to be strengthened in a hurry, or we may be in trouble. Also need Wanayama back a.s.a.p.
corky morris Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 Just in. Enjoyed it. Don't think we learnt much. Joss is woeful. Yoshida a bit better. Great to see us score from outside the box! Inge roasted Joss for the second. Inge looks a better player than Barnard, Sharp & Lee, but not sure he is better than what we have. He also looks as though he wants to play in a two up front & that does not suit us. Home tie against Rochdale or Huddersfield or Preston please. Olallana Posted 4 January, 2014 Share Posted 4 January, 2014 I´ll bet we draw Arsenal tomorrow and have to play them twice in four days. Those kind of draws happens surprisingly often when teams are due to play in the league...
