New Stadium

I sat next to a reporter from NBC on the train to the Chelsea Game last month. He had been down to Staplewood to interview Cody Cropper regarding his chances in USA TEam for world cup. He said there are strong rumours that workers in the Cement Works Site on the Itchen opposite the Stadium, had received redundancy notices and an unknown company was buying the site. Make of that what you will.

Best not get to excited until we hear something a bit more concrete.

The road infrastructure to SMS is rubbish and one excellent reason to move, although the current works around the end of the bridge may have been instigated to help. However, I really cannot see the planning permission going through for the Ford site and there must be huge costs involved that I don't believe the club will have available. No, at the moment the more likely scenario is for SMS development (if indeed anything is in the immediate plans).

Only if we stay in city centre for me. Otherwise I'd rather work was done to improve the roads.

Yes, a good 2m of clean inert capping plus all that hazardous waste to dispose of. At least 8 million quid - how are we going to fund that?

Perhaps Ford have a legal duty of care to make good the site? Perhaps the Landlord (I think this is the Airport authority) have some responsibility too? Perhaps a three way deal could be arranged with club contributing a portion of the cost? Still unlikely IMO, but not out of the question.

I am a little bit ITK on this one from an unreliable source. Cortese thinks that with CL football St Mary's would be nowhere near big enough and developers want to take St Marys off his hands as part of the redevelopment of Southamptons inner city (West Quay watermark etc.). Last I heard the developers were still in talks with the club

Why do you think that. I would have thought that Planning Permission would be the easiest hurdle to jump.

Depends on many variables. Would the stadium lights affect air traffic for example? There would be a need for significant road improvements as J5 M27 is a nightmare already.

the traffic setup would need to be reshaped entirely. Getting in and out of Eastleigh on a daily basis is an utter slog, throw 32k+ people there, and you wouldn't be moving for hours based on the current roads etc.

I would imagine the remediation costs involved for the Ford site would be quite substantial

We could all chip and knock a bit down ourselves, in much the same way as they used to ask for volunteers to clear the snow from The Dell pitch on a Saturday morning before a game.

Let's Say we get to the CL

Let's say the club builds at 60000 seat stadium at the Ford Factory.

In addition to lots of other things the club needs to improve its marketing - how is it going ensure adults, children and young people make Saints where they want to spend their spare money rather than going out, clothes, xbox etc

This is the rumours I have heard circling, pretty sure the plan is to upgrade the existing waterfront as part of a joint venture with the council that has just been landed a large grant from government.

We wont be moving sites, we dont even sell out St Marys, an expansion potentially in a couple of years but at the moment we are ok.

In my view, the city-centre-accessibility of our stadium is a massive plus. I mean, most of us walk the last half mile or so to the stadium and that seems to work pretty well. Those that want a pint on the way, or on the way back can fill their boots.

Think about Brighton or Stoke, say; their stadia are near arterial roads but....... what else do they have going for them? The park and ride at Brighton is a 'king nightmare for starters.

Whilst it would be funny to have two new stadiums before the skates even get one id bloody hate an out of town one.

Regardless of the size debate (which seems pretty clear now that we're not ready to have yet), the central location of SMS is what makes it so great.

I come from London having moved from work and love the fact I can walk to pub first then the ground, and after the game easy get beers in and catch up with mates who still live at home.

Going to an out of town stadium would be souless and horrible. As has been shown by Brighton, reading, derby, Coventry etc.

Strange to see this thread on here.

The commentators on the Saints v Chelsea game started to talk about how long it was going to take them to get out of the stadium and then another couple of hours to get up the A33 to finally hit the M3 blah blah. Almost as if this was some sort of hot topic that they'd just been hearing about before the game. They made no mention of a new ground but it was the first time I'd ever heard commentators moan about the travel situation from St Marys.

Can you still drink at the bar in Southampton airport without actually having to fly anywhere? Guess they best get some extra staff in.

It sounds logical to me.

If we are serious about European football then St Mary's will have to be enlarged, and if you come from outside Southampton and don't know your way around then the logistics of getting there are a nightmare.

However I expect that there would be very considerable costs putting in new road links to a site at Fords, but for everyone coming from outside Southampton it would be much easier.

I'm sure the Liebherrs could fund it if they wanted to.

Couldn't agree more mate. I really hope we don't move away from the city centre, the experience would be horrendous on a match day - nothing better than jumping off the train, having a few beers in pubs on the way to the ground then getting to the ground easily and quickly.

The whole "away from the town centre" experience is sh*t and I'm thankful we never got the ground at Stoneham for that reason!

Useless wallies. I get home to Chandlers Ford within the hour and that includes 30 minutes walking.
